Okay, I have to admit right off the bat that I was too disgusted with Saturday's game to even look at anything online until this morning. So, while this issue should have been in the game wrap, I'm too late to put it in there. Hence this post.
There's a lot of negativity getting thrown Hunwick's way right now, and with good reason. But I don't see anyone analyzing what I take to be the real issue with regard to the end of Sat's game: Why the hell was the Hunwick/Shatty duo on the ice for a defensive zone faceoff in overtime when Tavares' line was out there? This was a home game and Sacco had the decision about who to send out _after_ he saw that Tavares was out there.
That leads my struggling train of thought right on down to: With the defense struggling so much lately, how much of that is a direct result of a lack on the coaches' parts of managing their line matchups? Who calls the defensemen's changes? Sacco or Lefebvre?
Look, I'm not completely down on the Avs right now, but line matchups seem to be the one area where coaches can really impact a game. And sending Hunwick/Shatty out against Tavares for a defensive-zone draw is, well, less than inspired and certainly cost the Avs the win.
