Forsberg to Practice with the Avalanche
For the 2nd straight day, very, very surprising news out of Denver. Not really sure what to make of this, but I definitely like it.
Beachie's Note: because it keeps coming up in the thread, I thought I'd put this here so that you don't have to look through it to find the info.
Tomorrow's practice is at the Pepsi Center during the morning skate. It is NOT open to the public. Morning skates never are. It is highly unlikely that you will be able to get a signature after that skate. The security is a lot tighter than at Family Sports Center. Speaking of FSC, those practices ARE open to the public. The team generally practices most off days unless they have a back to back or more than 2 days between games. Most practices start between 10:30-11:30 am. Always call that morning (I usually do at 9:30) to confirm if they will be there or not and at what time. These practices are your best bet for getting signatures. Players often will stop for pictures and sigs after practice as they're leaving the underground parking lot. I hope that answers all the practice questions!
UPDATE: Folks have called and practice is scheduled for 10:15 am

there are no waivers involved anywhere as he has not played professionally this year.

I believe there is a cut-off though… if he doesn’t sign with a team by a certain date then he would have to

As far as I know, he never signed with a club so he’s eligible to sign with a team and not have to go through waivers. I think he just practiced with Modo, and played in tournaments which don’t count.
Per Dreger, he doesn’t have to go through waivers.
Colin Campbell doesn't have the balls to eject Semin.
Thought so. I remember McKenzie posting on twitter earlier in the season about waiver rules in regard to non-NHL players signing and he pointed out that Forsberg was smart about it if he wanted to make a return.
I guess I should have read a little further before asking my question above.

I thought the Flyers traded him before he ever played a game. The only reason they have a picture of him in the jersey is because he put it on on draft day, unlike someone he was traded for.

Remember when the Colorado Avalanche used to fill opposing nets like Santa Claus?
Here is an idea, put Foppa in Koci’s spot on bench I bet our attitude changes real quick and we only need him for 4-5 min a game ……
Big Break
Sounds like Dean Lombardi caught a break. His big mouth is playing second-string to the news of Foppa practicing with the Avs!
Lombardi wasn’t pretty correct though in saying that the people up there suck at their job.
Colin Campbell doesn't have the balls to eject Semin.
So he got fined 50k for telling the refs they made a mistake…yet the refs/Toronto who made the call don’t get any repercussions for costing the team a goal? Possibly 2 points, possible a playoff spot?
What a joke…
It’s one thing to complain about an obviously bad call that was badly reviewed (here’s a picture of why http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_sports_nhl_experts__85/ept_sports_nhl_experts-965040880-1295622549.jpg?ymVWzbED5OJAvi0a ) but an entirely other thing to question the integrity of the League VP of Operations.
Well I question the integrity of a lot of officials at that level.
Colin Campbell doesn't have the balls to eject Semin.
Is this the same guy that said the Avs didn’t score last night? Though I will admit it’s a lot harder to see that the Avs scored than it is to see that the Coyotes scored off a high stick.

Until the refs come out and start apologizing or the NHL starts fining/punishing the refs/Toronto, he’s justified to say how he feels.
I don’t like how people who can change the entire game aren’t held accountable.
I don’t like how these people have basically nullified the entire reason for having instant replay in the first place, solely through their own incompetence
"In my experience, there's no such thing as luck" -Obi Wan Kenobi
Exactly….All 4 officials on the ice agree that it shouldn’t have been a goal after reviewing the replays, yet someone THOUSANDS of miles away decides it was a good goal.
Colin Campbell doesn't have the balls to eject Semin.
That’s not exactly right. In Toronto they decided that there wasn’t conclusive evidence to overturn the call on the ice. The difference is subtle, but it’s there.
Now, the Kings are my second favorite team and I watched the game last night and the call and review were complete crap, but I still think Lombardi crossed the line.
Lombardi was in the wrong with his statement but he doesn’t deserve to be fined 50k for speaking his mind. You misinterpreted my statement, I know WHY Toronto didn’t overturn it, but I was agreeing with Red. Why have officials and a replay process at the rink if a goals fate rests upon the shoulders of someone not even attending the game?
Colin Campbell doesn't have the balls to eject Semin.
I don’t mind the war room thing, I just think the execution is piss poor. I third grader could have said the Avs goal was good.
"In my experience, there's no such thing as luck" -Obi Wan Kenobi
Hanzal’s goal should have been recalled too. It’s a bad call period. And while yeah something like that shouldn’t drastically turn the tide of the game, we all saw the result of the Stoa goal. Shit like that as a topping on the shit salad that is Flash being done for the season is enough to deflate a young group of guys.
Colin Campbell doesn't have the balls to eject Semin.
Ok, Ok, Piss on Toronto. 2 bad reviews against my 2 favorite teams in the same night!
Lombardi was right to complain, but I still think he crossed an invisible line by linking the bad call to events involving the Kings in the past. Hell, maybe it’s even true but it’s just not something that a GM should be airing out in public.
In no way was it professional, but they shouldn’t fine him for such things. Hell he already called the guy and apologized. Kissing that d-bags ass should be punishment enough. Holding GM’s responsible when they say something negative out of haste is all fine and dandy, but hold the officials who make piss poor calls responsible too.
Colin Campbell doesn't have the balls to eject Semin.
but hold the officials who make piss poor calls responsible too.
Yeah. there is no haste, and absolutely no excuse to mess up the call in these instances. Some can be controversial i admit, but to mess up blatantly obvious calls… well I’d sound off too. And take the fine while not kissing ass.
"In my experience, there's no such thing as luck" -Obi Wan Kenobi
It was close, but probably not a goal.
Lombardi deserved to be fined though. More than 50K if you ask me.
His silence in relation to when he benefited from the same thing against the Canucks in the playoffs last year and his noisiness now are kinda a black and white, 2 sides to the coin thing.
Or puck karma, whichever.
Good luck with Forsberg. Those ankles and feet won’t allow him to be the same player, but who knows right?
Should put a few more butts in the seats if nothing else.

Yeah…but so what, you know? The ref is right behind the net, he called it good. Compare him to Jim Joyce or something, but they are human.
Lombardi was way worse last night than the Canucks when we got equally screwed out of a good goal…in the playoffs. Which is way worse!
They even out.
Kings need that to obfuscate the fact they suddenly cannot score. ;-)

I’ve no idea about the Pepsi Center. I question how easy that will be. And yes, there should be practice on Sunday. You have to call each morning, though, since they sometimes get the day off. All Forsberg has to do is play better than Yip or Stoa
And he earns a contract. Shouldn’t be too hard

exactly
because if he’s not 100%, he won’t play. It’s not that the Avs wouldn’t want him to or leave a spot for him. It’s that he will refuse to play if he can’t play “his” game. I respect that a lot.

would probably look better out there than Yip right now.
You could even do a line change and tell Peter to stand at the other team’s blue line and just wait there for the Avs to go on the offense and he’d be better defensively than Yip right now

The Avs management needs to stop being insulted. Theyhave a plan. This not only bolsters the team, it gives the team confidence. It shows the brass cares and will do what is right. 5 minutes a game of Forsberg is 5 minutes that will fuck with every team’ head.

That’s like bowing to a recent lottery winner for having a “plan” to win it.
Unless Forsberg is bringing his Mom’s recipe for a killer penalty kill with a side of shut down defense, we’re still just a bolstered and confident offensive team.
"I'm sick of following my dreams. I'm just going to ask them where they're goin', and hook up with them later." -- M.H.

I disagree. They could go and sign someone crazy. They could start trading talent. They could gut our depth. They could do nothing and have the team little by little lose confidence. This won’t help the PK or the defense. But it does give the young a team of confidence that they need to get through this tough stretch of injuries.

So I was thinking on the way home (crazy, huh?) that if Foppa is able to make it back, it’s not going to be for many years and he’ll surely want to spend those years with the Avs. And that led me to think there’s a chance there was an agreement ahead of time: “sure you can come practice with us…just remember we get first dibs.” And THEN I thought it would be pretty dickish if either party didn’t do the “Forsberg to Avs” deal after that kind of agreement and/or this ramp up for the NHL time. So in the end, I convinced myself that Forsberg will wear the dreaded unipron (and make it look sexy for the first time ever) unless his foot (not Foote) says, "Fuck off.)

Seriously? If you’re having sex at all, you should get tested every 6 months. It takes about 4-6 months for HIV to show up on tests; if you get tested every 6 months, you know your status. Even people in “monogamous” relationships should do it because you never know… I do it even if I’m not sexually active. It’s just a habit now, like getting a physical or going to the dentist. Smart people don’t fuck around with that shit. And having taught sex ed made me that much more intelligent about all that sex stuff.

See I don’t get this. The guy is actually practicing with the team. Whether he makes it back into the NHL again or not really doesn’t matter. He’s going to give the team something to get excited about which, I guarantee, will translate to the ice. Moreover, Avs fans have had a lot of heartbreaking news recently with little to find joy in. This is something we can excited about. Whether he ever actually plays for the Avs or anyone else, why the fuck not speculate and get giddy and be stoked that he’s at least in Denver skating for the next 10 days? Would you rather lament about Fleischmann’s injury? Cuz that’s what we’d be doing if this news hadn’t dropped today.
I just don’t get the Downer Debbie stuff. Who gives a crap if we’ve gone through the “is he or isn’t he” shit before? Just enjoy this while it lasts.

I’m just over it. Sorry that doesn’t jive with the fist-pumping, internet joy-riding goodness of basically everyone else in hurr. Maybe the whole ’let’s just get excited for excitement sake" isn’t something I’m up for right now, since you know, my life isn’t exactly sunshine and roses, either. And I’m not a rahrahrah kind of dude.

Flash + Mueller + Forsberg = 82 man games played?
Not Likely :(
My wife, the nurse, just explained to me how Flash can’t play on blood thinners because a small cut could make him bleed out on the ice. Meanwhile any bruising would lead to internal bleeding. One good check and its over.
yeah, sleep well tonight kiddos.

I’ve been saying all day that the reports that “his career’s not over, he’s all good” is bullshit. He will most likely have to stay on blood thinners for the rest of his life to avoid these clots. They’re not the first he’s had. And if he’s on blood thinners…see Taco’s comment.

I have a blood disorder that when it acts up, it acts up. My blood platelet count was so low at one point that my veins couldn’t keep it inside the veins… I literally could die from a small cut, but the bigger worry was internal bleeding. And my poor mother got a scary-as-Hell list that said all the ways I could die from internal bleeding because the count was so low. When I got back to Canada they were freaked out because it was so low. Getting a phone call for a specialist at 3 am is never a good thing.
I have to imagine that they’ll keep an eye out of his counts… but trust me when I say there is no freaking way he could play hockey.

It was the arm caught in the snow while the rest of my body twisted in the air. Man, it fucking sucked. No x-ray would pick it up cuz it was a twist fracture and settled right back in place. Fantastic News
I hold out hope that he’ll be able to play even a handful of games with the Avs.
Positives no matter what:
- This generates interest in the team.
- His influence just being around the rink will make our young kids better.
- This all but solidifies the fact that if he ever plays again, it will be with the Avs.
- If this comeback fails, they can retire his jersey in the Pepsi Center.
Exactly.

And I fully believe now, that when he eventually announces his retirement, it will be from behind a podium in the Pepsi Center with the Avalanche logo gracing the background behind him.

Whether or not he ends up playing it’s exciting that he’s at least here in town skating with the boys and amping them up. I know we’ve all been down the “is he coming back or isn’t he” road many times, but this is as legit as it’s ever gotten, right?
All I want is closure. If he does indeed end up signing with us I’m not going to expect anything AMAZING, but it’d be nice for him to finish out the season (and hell if he can do it maybe another season or so!) with us before officially hanging up the skates and getting his number raised to the rafters. It would have felt weird to retire his jersey after all this floating in and out of North America/ hockey in general.

I hope he can make it back. It actually makes sense because with Fleischmann and Mueller gone the roster spot is open. Because as we all know Forsberg is never injured…
wait a minute…
Okay he is almost always injured, but come on it’s Forsberg. There is a roster spot open and if he can it would be cool if he could fill it. Anyway they need to find some way to sell tickets. Hopefully he can have another go at it.
