Jonas Holøs to return to Europe - Updated
UPDATE: Holøs has been officially reassigned to the Swedish Elite League. He will be playing for Växjö Lakers.
Norwegian defenseman Jonas Holøs has requested that the Avalanche release him from his contract in order to return to Europe to play. Despite what appeared to be strong performances last season and in training camp, Holøs was cut from the 2011-2012 team and sent to Lake Erie to play for the Avalanche affiliate Monsters. However, he was a healthy scratch for each of the Monsters games so far this season.
The Avalanche will have to agree to release Holøs, but there's little reason for them not to. He joins the ranks of Jaroslav Hlinka and Per Ledin as other European hockey players to leave the NHL after failing to see NHL ice time with the Avalanche.
Farewell, Jonas. Many of us will miss you very much.

And I too became a sad panda….I miss him.
Paul Stastny did, what Paul Stastny does. Score big goals.
This sucks…but we went out and signed a lot of defenseman which pushed him further on the depth chart…I’m surprised no one else wants him though.

It may be he doesn’t want them… Could be pushing to go back to Europe.

Could be…but he came over here for a chance…we weren’t even able to give him a year. Here’s hoping he gets a full shot somewhere else (if he wants)

he can still be traded
and catch on with a team like Edmonton (or NJ) who could use him?

what Ottawa wouldn’t want him, he’d be top pairing with them.

He wanted to play in the NHL, rather than the AHL.
In an interview with the Norwegian TV channel NRK he says that he’s agreed a release with the Avs, says he was not happy with his role this season and he wanted NHL time.
Avs told him he was low down the pecking order for the NHL roster that as they wanted to go with the younger players and he didnt want to play in the AHL, as the level of competition isnt good enough for him, and the lifestyle was not to his liking.
He’s back in Norway now, looking for a contract with a club in Russia, Sweden or Switzerland after agreeing with the Avs that he be released from his contract.
So crappy. I understand his point of view. It would have been great if they had found another team to trade him to. Clearly Ottawa needs some help on defense.

That is indeed unfortunate. I hope he can return to the NHL someday, maybe after a season or two in Europe (ala Lindstrom). It’s not hard to empathize with the perspective that he got the shaft here.
Just curious, how do you think he got the shaft? He played in more than 30 NHL games last season, and the coaches saw him pretty much every day, either in games or practices.
When Dater was campaigning for him to get called up, an AHL coach was calling Holos basically average for that league.
I guess I just don’t understand that mindset that any of these guys “get the shaft.” They earn time based on how they play (and some other factors, I’m sure, but mostly by their play).
That’s a fair point, assuming the Avs’ coaches are doing a good job of evaluating players.
It does make me wonder why this seems to keep happening. Are the Avs’ European scouts not very good? Is there some kind of internal power struggle? I mean, if they’re going to draft or sign guys from Europe, what’s the point of sticking them in the AHL? If they’re AHL quality, fine, but then why were they signed in the first place?
by Andrew_in_Seattle on Oct 14, 2011 3:55 PM MDT up reply actions
The Avs' European scouts ARE good.
Getting any NHL time at all out of a 6th round pick is gravy. The vast majority of players drafted that low don’t get a sniff of the NHL.
by ExiledAmongYou on Oct 14, 2011 4:34 PM MDT up reply actions
By writing “It’s not hard to empathize with the perspective” I’d really hoped to avoid this sort of response. If I were him, would I feel like I got the shaft? Hell yes. Scratched while the play of the people playing was lousy? Scratched at the minor league level? Anyone who wouldn’t feel that in his shoes is someone who would settle for failure and mediocrity. There are plenty of prospects at his level of play who wind up with more of an opportunity to develop their games to an NHL caliber level. The cards didn’t fall into place for him to be one of those favored prospects. It’s not an injustice or anything worth protesting over, but I empathize.
by NomadJackson on Oct 14, 2011 4:49 PM MDT up reply actions
It wasn’t the first part of the sentence I was asking about, it was the “…that he got the shaft here” part of it.
And what “sort of response” are you talking about? Was my question rude? Did I demean you? Did I insult you by simply asking you to further explain why you felt that way?
I empathize for him, too. Very difficult situation in many ways for him. But he didn’t get the shaft, he was evaluated during his time overseas and here. He played 39 games in the NHL (averaging 18 minutes per game), which is 39 more games than most 6th-round picks ever play.
The sort of response that asks me to justify an opinion I was simply expressing empathy with. I didn’t say “he got the shaft” and am not interested in making an argument that he did.
His circumstance IS unfortunate and I think based his level of play, he had a chance to develop into an NHL player under different circumstances. If someone were to feel he had no chance (or ø chance… couldn’t resist!) I’ll just agree to disagree.

I don’t blame him. If given the choice between Cleveland and Europe, I’d take Europe in a second.

He got a real good look last year, I’m not sure if he’s surprised by starting in the AHL but he shouldn’t be.
I'll keep this brief.
No he didn’t. He looked mediocre at best. He’s the same as Mark Oliver. They do nothing, but everyone seems to love them. There is no room for him on this roster.
Who is Mark Oliver?
If you are talking about Olver than I have to disagree that he did nothing. 2G 7A for 9pt in 18 games is not nothing. I’m not saying he is a top 6 guy, but he and Duchene had pretty good chemistry for the short time they played together. If not for getting injured he might have had many more games in CO last season. The kid played bigger than he is and was tenacious on the ice.
Datsyuk may have done it first, but he learned it from Peter Forsberg.

Olver has the unfortunate problem of being light and at the same height as most people’s elbows. I wouldn’t count on him ever doing anything (although we can hope). I was at the game last year where he got KO’ed, wasn’t a dirty play, he just got hit in the head because the defender couldn’t get low enough to hit him in the shoulders.

Bummed here as well
It seems he doesn’t figure into the Avs plans since he was on Nacho Duty in the AHL. However, he is still inder contract. Perhaps, playing in Europe will be the seasoning and playing time he needs and the Avs can sign him again at the end of the year to give him another chance with the organization.

I am surprised he was a healthy scratch in the AHL. I would guess that is what it did it for him. I understand he would be behind Elliot, Barrie and Gaunce, but not even seeing the ice at all is really shitty.
Our Johnson is bigger and better than LA's Johnson so suck it.
I was quite surprised; makes me wonder about our depth chart, and how I may have misestimated it. (Google spell check says that misestimated isn’t a word, but the prefixes seem ok to me)
Thanks, Joe... Thanks, Peter.... Thanks, Adam....
But it’s not really a word. You’d use misjudged or underestimated. =)

Do we still share LE as an AHL team with another NHL team? That would be my only guess why he rode the pine. The coach was playing Elliot, Barrie and Gaunce and then the top 3 D-men from the other NHL team and Holos was getting nacho time in the AHL. Which makes sense with why he would want to leave. I would too if I wasn’t playing and did not have much of a chance to.
Our Johnson is bigger and better than LA's Johnson so suck it.
At the risk of being a party pooper.....
I am not sad to see him go. Other than the slash in his last name’s spelling, I don’t really know what people saw in him, to be very honest. He had his chance(s) and didn’t make the most of them. It’s the way things go. He saw the future of the Avs blue line, and it wasn’t him.

The avs won’t miss him over the next 3 or 5 years, but at some point. We’ll hear, much like we did with TIm Thomas, that he was once in our system. In 2 or 3 years in his next stint in the NHL he’ll be a pretty good #3 or 4 guy.

Exactly…it would be one thing if he was ACTUALLY PLAYING in LE. But he was a healthy scratch the first two games. I’m guessing the writing was on the wall that he wasn’t going to play much unless injuries started piling up. Can’t blame him for wanting to play and not just collect a pay check while eating nachos.

This is the heart of the matter. Over the next couple of years would you want holos in over ej, Barrie, elliott, siemens, Quincey? He’s a solid player but doesn’t do enough to stay in the lineup consistently. Best of luck to him.

I would want Holos paired up with a player like Barrie or Elliott. I thought he was a solid stay at home defensman and would complement a offensive minded puck moving defensman very well..

Let’s not forget the Avs just added another dman to LEM in the recent trade with Anaheim, I’m not surprised Holøs wanted out given the context. His play with the Norwegian National Team has always seemed more confident than in the NHL, he never seemed to find that level of play on a consistent basis. I was a Holøs fan because he has shown skillful play, and his time in the NHL is a feel-good story, but in the reality of our organization he really has no future. It’s not just Elliott, Barrie and Gaunce, the play of Jan Hejda and Shane O’Brien has been impressive, perhaps more so than anyone had hoped going into the season.
Best of luck, bring the Ø where it is needed the møst!

I think – and I could be wrong – that the Avs still own his rights, but they have “released” him from playing in Erie. I do not think the contract is null and void, only that they agreed to let him play in Europe.

this was the final year of his contract
due to his age when signing, he received a 2 year deal
Languishing for Landeskog
he has only been "re-assigned" and has not been officially released
it would be like the Avs sending someone from the Monsters to their ECHL/CHL affiliate but instead it is Europe. Not as cut and dry as that but the general idea is there. Because he was only “re-assigned”, he may be an asset for a trade with a team needing NHL D’s if Holos is willing to return this year at the NHL level.
Languishing for Landeskog
I’m happy about this, and think it’s best for all.I think he still has potential to be a regular NHL defenseman, but sitting in the AHL is doing no on any good.
I’m actually a touch surprised the Avs couldn’t get a low-round draft pick for him.
