You Sure About That: Weekly Fights Recap
Im trying a little feature here, I might keep it going, I may not. It really depends on what you guys think about it so feel free to give some feedback. I feel that fighting is an important part of the game, and these posts will serve to create some respect for the brawlers out there.
Just for reference, I have a rating system from 1 to 10. 10 being a beauty. So far I can think of one 10, minus rob ray pounding that fan, and that would be the exchange between the late great Bob Probert and Tie Domi.
Not much to talk about in the first week but I will look at two fights here so far. Both fights come on the road as our guys step up to defend the fellow players.
Fight 1
Highlander Vs Derek Dorsett
Colorado @ Columbus: September 23rd, 2011
Recap: The highlander comes in for this brawl. A great fight near the penalty box between two highly motivated guys. I give the edge to McLeod even though he had the size advantage. A fight designed to get the energy level flowing, and this is just what happened as a noticeable difference can be seen in the unipron boys.
I give this fight a 7. Great energy, great exchange.

Fight 2
Ryan Wilson vs. Zach Smith
Colorado @ Ottawa: October 13th, 2011
Recap: I was at this game, and this was a beauty. Wilson comes in to defend a head shot hit from Zach Smith on Landy. The only things Zach Smith got out of this was a sore face though, and maybe some free ice in the box. Wilson destroys Smith.
Based on the context, I give this fight a 8. Wilson steps up, and shows why he is a valuable addition to this team by sticking up for the young guys.

I really think the Wilson fight was a good fight. A team mate gets hit high and you jump in. On the other side, a big hit was needed and even more a fight to spark some energy. Great Hockey fight. Great Idea and hope you keep it up.
Thanks a lot.
I agree the fight was a beauty. This is one of those reasons for fights in hocky imho. Wilson did a great job.
its great to have the feedback. Keep it coming and I will make it better and better every week.

For sure.
And its great to see the vet guys defending the younger guys. I think thats crucial. It really builds a bond, and its good to know that yours brothers will have your back. Really good boost to team unity.

the fans should dress up in kilts
and the rink should play a theme song and then say “highlander, there can be only one”

Something like this?

Datsyuk may have done it first, but he learned it from Peter Forsberg.
Thanks for everything Foppa!

Good idea
I’m a fight fan.
That hit on Landy looked high. Was there any review of that?

not that I know of, but we got a little bit of justice
It seems to me that a lot of guys are trying to run landy so far. I saw it a couple of times last night. I get it, they are trying to send a message. But I don’t like it lol.
And I am with you, I am a big fight fan and advocate.

He did kind of push his head down and forward. Not just a whole lot else Smith could have done.
It's all about the O'
Yeah it did seem like he got his head a little down, but still. Not that I am really surprised by the no review, or by the fact that a lot of guys are saying “welcome to the NHL” given how he’s played. But with Inspector Shanahan behind the scenes, it has seemed like ANY hit to the head is reviewed.
Just curious, I didn’t get to watch that game.

He’s already proved that he doesn’t review them all. The elbow to Stoa’s head in preseason wasn’t reviewed.

I will do my best to appease the fans of it. Its great to know that people like it. I thought for sure that I was going to be arguing about fighting being in the game, not having so many positive responses.
I don’t know if there will be a fight every week, but I will figure something out…

Nice job, very good recap.
I loved Wilson’s fight because it wasn’t a case of just going after a guy who got hit, it was a case of him going after a guy because of an illegal hit.
Wilson’s a great teammate, always has been. We’ve lacked in team toughness in the past, even when we dressed heavyweights. Maybe since we don’t have a heavyweight this year, we’ll spread the scraps out a little more evenly.
I am in the Don Cherry boat on this. I dont want guys who are just goons, they need to be hockey players. My best is example is Al Secord from the blackhawks, or even Deadmarsh. Guys who would fight, but had an outside role. On that note, I am with you. Guys stuck up for the team, and that’s exactly what we need. Unity. Brotherhood. Responsibility. Thats what will build us most for the future, and those are the most important traits to teach our young guys.

I like having guys that can do more than fight, but there have to be several of them on a team to distribute the load or one guys hands are going to be too beat up to do more than fight.

I think that will always be the case
Its a skill set, and some guys embrace that more then others.

I agree about not wanting goons in the NHL. Hockey is a very physical game and takes some manly courage to play as well as strength. However it is much more refined than say football or rugby. Those are more grunt sports. What sets hockey apart is its elegance and finesse. It is not slow like basketball where you can call out a set play as you meander down the court. No, you have to know what your teammates are going to do in a given situation, what their style is, etc. It moves fast and go have to think fast. It’s all about angles and moving to open ice. But don’t get me wrong, I can’t stand the finesse player that doesn’t grind it out in the corner, make the big hits and use his strength to create a little room ( a la Forsberg). That was always what I didn’t like about Gretzky and why I actually cheered when Duchene got into his first fight. If the refs called a better game there would be less need for fighting but there will always need to be guys that are not afraid to stand up for their own. Those fights are chivalrous. It when two guys just go at it that I cannot stand. When you are at a game you can tell which fans understand the game and who the backwoods hicks are by the things that inspire cheering. It is almost embarrassing to be at a game when the loudest roar from the crowd comes every time it even looks as though a fight might break out.

I’m not sure Deadmarsh is a good example here given his career ended because of a concussion he received in a fight with Ed Jovanowski. But, I agree that the designated goon is not long for the sport. The game has become too fast and athletic to waste a seat on the bench for a guy who needs his stick just to stand up on skates. I sincerely hope that the NHL does not go the way of European hockey where they don’t fight much, but they do apply the cheap shot on a routine basis.

My point is the goals scored
he did more then just fight. Concussions can happen anytime. I have had concussions from fighting, I have had them from falling, I have had them from being hit. It happens.

Good idea, something to break up the normal routine. Plus its one less website to visit (hockeyfights.com) and keeps me in the rhelms of MHH. Keep it up! Either do it weekly or by number of fights… or add in deadwings players getting smashed as well.
Oct. 8... is it here yet?
Love the idea of the red wings as filler (what else are they really good for?). The generic nhl highlight reels make me smile a little extra every time i saw a wing hit the ice or boards.
Two fights exemplifying the two best reasons to fight in hockey. Even if the hit on landeskog had been cleaner, I think it’s still good to send the message that consistently targeting him is going to have consequences for the player that does it.
Curious. Usually the NHL brass has the excuse that it happened after they went to bed, but these games were played in the Eastern time zone.

I thought SOB got into a fight this year? Something about protecting the goalie? God i have hated my work schedule lately.
