Kyle Cumiskey Reportedly on Waivers
As featured in Patrit19's fanshot, Bob MacKenzie has tweeted that the Avalanche have waived Kyle Cumiskey. The move is a little odd in the timing, with the season starting tomorrow and the final roster already set (Cumiskey has been on the IR). Apparently, he is healthy now (as some practice-watchers have speculated) and will head to Lake Erie if he clears waivers.
We thought this move would be coming at some point...just not one day before the season opener.
UDPATE: The move has been confirmed by the Denver Post.
Another UPDATE: Post practice interviews that include Sacco talking about Cumiskey. He did a great job of dodging any hard-hitting question...

Agreed, the GM’s knew that he was either not worth trading for or gambled on claiming him off waivers. I don’t think he’ll make it through waivers or re-entry waivers. He has atalent.
A man who stole my whisky used the defense that no one could resist a bottle of Scotch. I had no choice but to testify on his behalf.
why would you claim him if you don’t know if he can play or not. Besides he’s probably not in game shape right now.

He doesn't have to clear re-entry waivers
At least not according to this piece by DDC and his explanation near the bottom of that story (second to last comment).
correct. Cumiskey makes $105,000 in the AHL, the exact threshold for players before they become eligible for re-entry waivers.

Indeed. And that one talent is speed.

no
they like former Avs who can play, eso. Liles. That proves the Avs are bottom feeders. Liles is exactly what they need and I’m not saying he’s a 5M a year guy but his points and offense could have helped a lot. People who say he’s not a good scorer and wouldn’t help on PP are clueless. Cumiskey will get claimed I think but so be it.
by the cool breeze on Oct 7, 2011 1:58 PM MDT up reply actions
I doubt it; not because of his play, but based on his injury history. About Cumiskey, I mean.
Thanks, Joe... Thanks, Peter.... Thanks, Adam....
that would be the reason if he doesn’t but he’s young, can skate and lots of teams are light at D, he has a small contract so I think he will but either way we will know what teams think of him.
by the cool breeze on Oct 7, 2011 2:19 PM MDT up reply actions
I'm cornfused
Didn’t the Avs just sign him to a contract not even a month ago? Why would the Avs sign him just to put him on waivers?

Then, is the theory to keep him in the Avs system for another year to see if he improves and or just to have another experienced able healthy body around in case we have the rash of injuries we had last year?

If he plays decently he’d be claimed on re-entry. He’s either stuck in the AHL all year then a FA or he gets called up and claimed.

Yup; he is safe from re-entry waivers, which I cannot imagine was a coincidence. They’ll send him down, see how he does in the AHL, and then bring him back up when injuries hit / if he’s doing well. Even tho I mock it constantly, if he somehow becomes super-awesome at the AHL level, we could still trade him away for some depth, but nothing remotely significant.
Just let the kid marinate down there for a few months and see what comes of it.
Thanks, Joe... Thanks, Peter.... Thanks, Adam....

The 2011-2012 Colorado Avalanche: a mean, junkyard dog looking for revenge
I wish him a lot of luck. He went a lot farther than most 7th-rounders do. Seemed like a quiet guy who didn’t exude a ton of confidence on or off the ice. Coaches saw something in him, because he played a ton of minutes when he was in the lineup. Kind of a tweener – not great a offense or defense.
I won’t soon forget his 1-on-4 OT winner against the Thrashers.

It looks like a freakin’ sweet goal on youtube – I can’t imagine what it would have been like live.
The only goal I’ve seen live was from David Jones last year. The good guys ended up losing 1-3 to the Wild. Hopefully they’ll be able to beat Tampa Bay this year though. With any luck, my fantasy drafting of Stamkos will jinx him and his team sufficiently enough that the Avs will be able to pull off the upset. We’ll just ignore the fact I drafted 6 Avs as well…..

HALLELUJAH! No offense to Cumiskey, because I am sure he is a very nice guy, but his hockey “skills” were very limited. But for some reason people like the coach had a Quenneville like fascination with him

I don’t see why this is such a big deal. He is being sent down, and has to pass through waivers. His development isn’t stopping, and the team isn’t necessarily giving up on him. He missed most of last year and most of preseason; this is the logical time to send him down to get his legs back under him without risking someone else snatching him up. Its not like we are cutting him loose; cutting him completely.
Thanks, Joe... Thanks, Peter.... Thanks, Adam....
I’m not saying it’s a big deal. I’m just saying it seems like he was brought up a little young.
Rawr Rawr Rawr, no one understands you, she-bear
Sorry, Paul, this was as much in response to this entire thread as to you. I just mean that people are saying things like “I always liked him, good luck Kyle!”, and “Good riddance, we don’t need him clogging up the works.” Its not like he’s been shitcanned, or traded. He’s just being sent down, and we can very possibly see him again if he does well in LE and the mainstays get injured. Who knows.
Thanks, Joe... Thanks, Peter.... Thanks, Adam....
Seems that Barriott and Gaunce have passed him in the pecking order. Siemens will pass him in a few years. So that’s four. Not sure how much more developing you can do with a guy who’s already played with the big boys for 132 games over parts of the past four seasons. He turns 25 in two months. I think he’s about as finished as he’s ever gonna get.
It’s not you, Kyle, it’s us. We’ve finally embraced a defensive philosophy that makes us bigger and tougher to play against. No room in that group for a guy who gets pushed around pretty easily.
