Goodbye Kyle Cumiskey. Cumiskey traded to the Ducks.
During the Detroit vs Colorado game it was announced that Kyle Cumiskey has been traded to the Anaheim Ducks for Jake Newton and a conditional pick. If Cumiskey plays more than 45 games for the Ducks, Colorado gets a fifth round pick. If Cumiskey cannot earn that much ice time, the Avalanche will get a 7th round pick.
Newton, 23, is currently playing for Anaheim’s AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. The San Jacinto, Calif., native was signed by Anaheim as a free agent on March 17, 2010 after playing one season at Northeastern University in 2009-10. He was selected to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team at Northeastern.
Kyle was drafted 222nd overall, by the Avalanche in the 2005 draft. Cumiskey was only able to play 18 games last year due to injury. He does have to pass a medical on Monday.
Jake Newton is, at 6 foot 3 and 200 pounds, a fairly big defenseman. He has also played in both the USHL All-Star game and USHL Second All-Star Team in '09 and in the NCAA (Hockey East) All-Rookie Team in '10.
Welcome to the Colorado Avalanche Mr. Jake Newton.

My dad and I were at this game, he brings this play up every single time he hears Kyle Cumiskey’s name. I am pretty sure it was like a religious experience for him.
I really don’t get all the credit he gets for that. Nice shot, sure, but that defending was just appalling xD YOU TAKE HIM NO YOU TAKE HIM NO YOU WELL IM NOT TAKING HIM WELL GOOD FUCKING GOING GUYS YOU ALL GOT US SCORED ON WELL WHY DIDNT YOU TAKE HIM WHY DIDNT YOU SHUT UP I HATE YOU ALL
I imagine that’s what the conversation went like.
It's all about the O'
One of my all-time favorite radio calls, and I still have it on my phone. “KYLE CUMISKEY! STICK-HANDLING SON OF A GUN!! HE DEKES HEDBERG, HE BURNS HIM!!!!”
Ah, Moser, how I love you. Cumiskey… not so much, but good luck in Anahiem
Forever grateful that Joe Sakic isn't a raging dick hole like Brett Favre.

Jake Newton
From Anaheim Calling:
Jake Newton: His offensive game is so good, you sometimes forget about the defensive lapses. The shot is beautiful. His passes are crisp. He needs to better at dominating along the boards and staying on his check, and keeping the play in front of him. This will be a key developmental year for Newton in Syracuse. He has all the offensive tools; if his defensive game develops, he’ll be a great asset.

He sounds a bit like a bigger Elliott. Maybe a little less far along, but if he really does have a good shot…….

Good Luck Kyle!

I was surprised at this. I hope that Cumiskey can turn it on with the Ducks, but I wonder why Anaheim didn’t just claim him off of waivers.
Thanks, Joe... Thanks, Peter.... Thanks, Adam....
zandar mentioned the 50 contract limit in the other thread. Sounds quite plausible to me.
Plus – Cumiskey is Cam Fowler (Cam Newton), one of those.

It's either that...
or they didn’t have room on their NHL roster without loosing someone else to waivers (or demotion) and now that he cleared they can put an NHL body in the AHL that they can recall.
Or… (can’t find all the details on this) Anaheim didn’t want to loose their position for waiver claims as I believe once they claim a player they go to the back. The waiver system is all crazy but I believe that is also one reason some players clear as teams want to remain high on the list when they can. Again… Could be wrong
Languishing for Landeskog
it makes sense. I’ve certainly been scratching my head about it.

Waiver position. That’s it. Thank you for bringing that up because I was baffled. Makes sense now.

I think that something like this was the reason the Avs re-signed him
Sherman could have lost him for nothing, but we got a 7th round pick (which is what Cumiksey was) OR a 5th as well as a big, young, defensive prospect with a good shot from the point.
We lucked out. Good work Sherman.

I wish Cumiksey the best though. It’s good he got out of this system. We’re moving in a different direction and he didn’t fit. He wouldn’t have gotten the chance he deserves.
Best of luck in Anaheim. Please don’t score 10 goals on us this season.

I’m going to go with a mid 80’s era Zamboni.
Sometimes life is like:
"Give me your lunch money, bitch!"
And I’m like, "ok".
Does it work or not? That’s gonna be the key to that deal.

This is most excellent, I’m very pleased I don’t have to be worried about him getting called up or whatever. I hope he has fun doing all the spin moves his heart desires on whoever the Ducks AHL team is.
I do have to give credit to Sherman for this one. We should have go nothing for him but we got another player for the AHL and a draft pick. Sadly I have always liked Cumiskey and think he will be much better in a system that does not just have puck moving defensive man..
the thing is...
they didn’t just get a guy for the AHL… they got a D prospect. Wilson was never drafted and was an after thought when picked up. The Avs added a player who just turned 23.

I don’t know that getting us another D prospect is something I would consider excellent, but its better than the nothing I expected we’d get for him.
