This is just the type of selfish crap Sacco’s gets pissed off at Dutchy for. You’d never hear Joe Sakic talk about his own greatness or self satisfaction, before team result.

I don’t think I would go quite that far…and I am not going to read too far into this, but yeah, it comes off looking a little bit bad.

If the team is playing fairly well overall, that’s a fun game to watch win or no. As it turns out, the pond-hockey game was in the midst of what is now a pretty bad losing streak. Makes it harder to enjoy in retrospect for sure, but if we won the ten surrounding games, absolutely nobody would have a problem with Duchene’s comment.

Meh, it’s a bleeding one-liner of a quote taken completely out of context. Whatever. Dutchy plays better when he’s enjoying the game and relaxed.

...
For a guy who just scored his first career hat trick in a wide open, pond hockey style game, I’m not surprised he had a blast. I don’t have a problem with it. If Varly came out and said that, I’d be more worried about it. As it is, is this really something to be upset about? A guy admitting he had a great time playing the game he loves just because his team lost? Seriously?

Actually, yeah, seriously. If he was as sick of losing as he should be, I don’t see that comment happening. While I think it isn’t something that should be considered a major deal, if there was a captain on the team, I think he’d tell Dutchy to chill on comments about himself in the context of where the Avs are and how they could extend the end of season past into a long losing streak this season, as well.

Sacco demoted him because of why? Only his play? I think because Dutchy tends to put self accomplishment over being a solid NHL player. Dutchy pretty much apologized to Sacco for it. It isn’t just about this quote.
...holy freaking f*ck, snakes!
Sacco demoted him because he has some petty doghouse where if you are a scorer and aren’t averaging 3 points a game he sends you down. Sacco’s doghouse is the biggest reason I want him gone, it’s petty and usually quite stupid. It has inspired maybe 1 player (Stewart…but even that didn’t last)
Aebischer. Nope. Salo? Ha! Sauve? Nah. Theodore. Meh. Kolesnik? Hey bud, nice shootout against the Devils, but no. Budaj? You kidding? Anderson, close, but no cigar. Elliott? GET THE TANK!!! Varlamov and Giguere? To the playoffs...AND BEYOND!!

Do you honestly believe there wasn’t an element of Dutchy trying to be a star player over being a solid NHL player in Sacco’s thinking?
...holy freaking f*ck, snakes!
So you’re saying that being a solid NHL player and trying to be a star player are somehow mutually exclusive? I just don’t see Duchene cherry picking, dogging it nor doing the blatent things taking extra long shift or icing the puck when he’s looking for an empty net goal. He’s not falling in to patterns you see from guys like Wolski, Semin, Heatley etc….
He works hard. He’s immensley talented. He takes losses as hard as anyone (see playoffs of rookie year). He doesn’t miss games due to injury and that’s not because he doesn’t get injured. Every player gets injured, he’s just playing through it. I simply do not get the criticism. Judge a guy based on what he does, not what he says. If you want him to give every Canadian hockey cliche answer then we certainly differ in opinion.
I'll keep this brief.
I’m saying Duchene has to be a solid NHL player who is a sound basic player before he can be a star. He makes too many errors in judgment and play at this time.
...holy freaking f*ck, snakes!
He IS a solid NHL player, yo

If he consistently made the right great move? yeah, for sure! Perspective that comes into play because Dutchy makes too many silly plays, still. But he isn’t there, yet, and needs to improve his NHL game to get there

But he isn’t there, yet, and needs to improve his NHL game to get there
Totally agree. But that’s not what you said. You said he isn’t a solid NHL player. That’s just absolutely, fundamentally erroneous.
The 2011-2012 Colorado Avalanche: a mean, junkyard dog looking for revenge
by Cheryl Bradley on Nov 10, 2011 9:01 AM MST up reply actions
There are still fundamental problems to his game, like when to dump the puck, over carrying the puck, positioning and forcing passes in too tight of areas. While I believe his skill level is very high, there are nuances of the game, and details he has yet to understand, and some of these become glaring mistakes. His upside and great offensive skill and skating are great, but his game management is not high, in my opinion, and that part of the game is still at a lower than average level for a solid NHL player.
...holy freaking f*ck, snakes!
Cuz that’s what you said.
Sacco demoted him because of why? Only his play? I think because Dutchy tends to put self accomplishment over being a solid NHL player.
You’re claiming you know what Sacco was thinking. Personally, I’d love for him to be a star player. I don’t want him to be a selfish player. Good thing he’s not. He tries to do too much and he takes on too much responsibility, forgetting he has help out there, but he is not a selfish player.
The 2011-2012 Colorado Avalanche: a mean, junkyard dog looking for revenge
by Cheryl Bradley on Nov 10, 2011 8:45 AM MST up reply actions
I am not claiming I know what Sacco thinks. I am saying there are reasons why he demoted Duchene and Matt apologized to him. For what? I think it was because Matt wants to be a star, before being a strong basic NHL player. He said as much when he said he tries to run before walking. Selfish play isn’t what I’m really thinking with Matt, but he isn’t a solid NHLer, yet, and my take is Sacco wants him to realize he cannot be a star without understanding the nuances of being an NHL player.
...holy freaking f*ck, snakes!
You think, your take are SO much different from what you said earlier. I still think you’re totally wrong about not being a solid NHL player. He HAS scored goals, after all. He has defensive lapses. News flash: he has since day 1. His apology was about trying too hard, not about trying to be a star. You are so reading into things.
The 2011-2012 Colorado Avalanche: a mean, junkyard dog looking for revenge

I think he apologized because
“I just went up to him and apologized. I also apologized to my teammates,” Duchene said from his locker room stall after the meeting. “I’m still young, and I make a lot of mistakes and I’m not playing to my capability right now. … It’s something I’ve always worked my way out of, and I’ll do it again.”
Again, you are reading way too much into things.

By the way, speaking of locker-room, one of the guys with the biggest smile on his face is ALWAYS Duchene, and like I wrote in a previous thread, he is always willing to give credit to others instead of himself (for example, pushing Flash in front of the mic after his hatty in Chicago)
Aebischer. Nope. Salo? Ha! Sauve? Nah. Theodore. Meh. Kolesnik? Hey bud, nice shootout against the Devils, but no. Budaj? You kidding? Anderson, close, but no cigar. Elliott? GET THE TANK!!! Varlamov and Giguere? To the playoffs...AND BEYOND!!

I agree, I don’t see an over-riding nonchalance, I think Matty was trying to bring the bright side into it. Being gloomy has a way of extending & perpetuating a losing streak, as we saw last season, so I have no problem with one of the players injecting “that was fun” quotes, so long as they don’t go overboard & get egocentric about it.

I know Keefe or McNabb asked the same question but way more leading, “IE. I know it’s not what you want with the OT loss but despite the results, how much fun was it to score your first hat trick in a game like that?”
Good grief. This isn’t politics.

To be fair, McNabb would be saying it was a great game for the Avs if they lost 100-1…because that one goal would have been “outstanding”

You don’t get her music because you’re not a 10 year-old girl. That’s her target audience.

I didn’t think being good was even possible for pop country.

pop country is one of the few genres I can’t stand. I’m listening to Hank III right now, give me some of that any ol day. Or Willie, (or his son Lukas) or Johnny Cash, or Merle Haggard, or Waylon, or….
shit. I just started a music tangent, didn’t I?

I don't understand the purpose of the line, "I don't need to drink

I’m a big fan of the more folky or alt country stuff, but would rather knock myself into a coma than listen to pop country.
Now I have Lyle Lovett stuck in my head.

I’d vote wait, but could easily imagine more teams copying Philly, especially if they go up a goal on TB.

I would think that would be a more blatant Delay of Game than accidentally shooting the puck over the glass in your own zone. But what do I know, right?

I’d like to see the trap go. If the penalize that for delay of game, you’ll see even more trapping. Once a team goes up by 1 goal, out comes the 1-3-1, and then start up the turnover machine. Game over.
I’d rather they call “illegal defense” and move the faceoff into the defenders’ zone.
