Dear Avalanche Front Office: Fans will not tolerate mediocrity

Lately on MHH there has been a handful of Avalanche fans going around and blasting others for their criticisms of Coach Sacco and the underperforming Colorado Avalanche. I’m here to tell those people that although they have the right as American (or Canadian) citizens to do so, the same rights apply for those who are critical of the Avalanche organization. I for one am a Denver, Colorado native… I live here, breathe here, work here; and I (still) give my hard earned money to this very undeserving organization.  I believe that I have a right to speak up because it is my hard earned money this team seems to piss away with their “uninspired” performances as of late.

Star-divide

I am the first to drink whatever Kool-Aid this hockey organization throws at me even if I don’t like the taste, but lately I cannot swallow what they have been trying to pour down my throat in water boarding-style fashion. First, this is a team that doesn’t just hug the cap floor, they downright hump it. Does spending money equal success? Just ask the Columbus Blue Jackets and you will find that isn’t always the case. However, I do believe that this organization fails (chooses not) to find the right pieces when given the chance to fire on a free agent that could potentially change the franchise into a contender (see Kovalchuk, Ilya) and instead settles for journeymen, could-be-greats (Joakim Lindstrom), should-be-greats (Eric Johnson), and has-beens (Chuck Kobasew) to fill in critical roles in the Avalanche roster; not because the Avalanche organization knows something that we don’t know, but because THEY’RE CHEAP. So I asked myself after that uninspired loss last night to the Minnesota Wild, “Would I demand a refund if I saw a game like that at Pepsi Center?” Oh wait… I did! It just so happens that a friend and I went to a Colorado Avalanche vs. Minnesota Wild game on a cold, frozen winter night at the Pepsi Center a year or so back that also had the awesomely exciting score of 1-0 Wild over the Avs. I had the flu, went out in the cold and spent $35 dollars (plus parking) to watch the NZT (Neutral Zone Trap) for 60 minutes. When leaving after the Wild scored to make it 1-0 with 3 minutes or so left in the game I turned to the KSE staff member standing in rear-guard formation at the curtained entrances out and said, “Who do I talk to about a refund?” the KSE staffer replied in a fashion that would have made the German Wehrmacht proud, “No refunds, no standing during action” I replied, “Actually, I’m leaving…and what action?!”.

Secondly, YES fire Sacco, and NO don’t give me the “He almost won the Jack Adams award two years ago” excuse. Dave Tippet actually won the award that year for the Phoenix Coyotes and look at them now; I believe that trophy is WORTHLESS when it comes to evaluating the skill of a head coach in the NHL. Jim Pracey’s drafting, the stellar play of the then-rookies Matt Duchene, Ryan O’Reilly, Brandon Yip, and TJ Galiardi, and Craig “Money-Money-Money-Money- MONEY!” Anderson standing on his head made Sacco look like a genius. But I believe that Joe Sacco is an inept NHL coach who not only shows favoritism towards players who have done nothing (Cody McLeod, Matt Hunwick, Chuck Kobasew, and Darcy Tucker) but puts star players in sometimes undeserved dog houses that only kills confidence (Matt Duchene, John-Michael Liles). He shifts the lines around so much in a way that what have made Coach Q proud leaving little to no chemistry between players. He coaches a straight ahead brand of hockey, and the Avs players seemingly NEVER attack the corners anymore. Joe Sacco should be coaching in the AHL or the CHL and not the NHL. But who do you replace him with? Sylvain Lefebvre? Adam Deadmarsh? David freaking Quinn?! None of those choices sit well with me, mainly because none of them have the experience to coach an NHL team.

Thirdly, fire Greg Sherman… an accountant should NEVER be allowed to run a franchise. That is all.

Fourthly, this story is not just another “RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE” as some of you have implied that some of us Avalanche fans are doing. Some of us are fans who actually attend the games night in and night out, not just watch them from the confines of our homes. I’m vocalizing my displeasure because I don’t appreciate the effort the Colorado Avalanche have given on the ice and I don’t appreciate the Avalanche front office thinking that we fans are so stupid as to spend outrageous prices to see a rebuilding project. I have a right to this opinion, if you don’t share it, fine but don’t think that all of this is unjustified. The Colorado Rockies (MLB) organization plays the same tight wad money making game the Avs play, with one difference… I can enjoy a Colorado Rockies game for $10-$15 plus $5 for parking.

To sum up this epic rant that means absolutely nothing, because it won’t change the world, feed the hungry, clothe the poor or change the stubborn minds that run the Colorado Avalanche I leave with this… The CBA talks are coming up after this year and this organization will finally know where that damn salary cap is going to be for the next decade (hopefully) they can finally stop running like they have been since 2004. If this team continues to hump the cap floor after the CBA of 2012 I don’t know if I can continue to cheer for this team… I feel like a part of me dies when I say that because I love the Colorado Avalanche so much… But I cannot watch my beloved team be handled this way. It is almost disrespectful how this organization has allowed itself to fall out of grace this much. Doesn’t anyone who runs this franchise have any pride anymore? Pierre Lacroix are you still there (French: Le Pierre Lacroix vous est toujours là?)? Anyone? Do you understand that you changed our lives forever when you brought your team from Quebec in 1995? We love the Colorado Avalanche and we have come to expect nothing but excellence from the players. There was a reason there was over 500+ sellouts for this team and there is a reason why Pepsi Center is now only half full. FANS WILL NOT TOLERATE MEDIOCRITY! BUT THEY WILL REWARD VICTORY! GO AVS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jones, Radar, Duchene, EJ are going to get an upgrade in pay, There is Wilson, Quincy, Duke, Mules, Gali, Yip, Hunwick are going to be in new contracts, I doubt all of these guys are coming back, but we will be higher then this year.

The cap spending being more next year than this year makes me think of an optimistic German in the Weimar Republic. Hey I am being paid more this year than last.

my rant...
(chooses not) to find the right pieces when given the chance to fire on a free agent that could potentially change the franchise into a contender (see Kovalchuk, Ilya) and instead settles for journeymen, could-be-greats (Joakim Lindstrom), should-be-greats (Eric Johnson), and has-beens (Chuck Kobasew) to fill in critical roles in the Avalanche roster;

I have a problem with this statement. Do you actually know how rare it is for a super star forward to go on the market? Also, ever since Kovie was traded, he hasn’t lived up to the hype. last year he had 60 points in 81 games, for comparison, Stastny had 57 points in 74 games (that’s .741 ppg for Kovie and .770 ppg for Stastny). He has 10 points in 12 games this year, small sample size, on track for a good year, but a lot like Stewart last year, Kovie either shows up, or he doesn’t. I was all for signing him or trying to acquire him, but after seeing how he has played, I’m glad we didn’t. I would much rather take a small risk on Lindstrom rather than be tied up in a huge contract with a player who may or may not have attitude problems and is an inconsistent player. Kobasew’s play has improved, he has a couple goals and I feel he is just now starting to mesh with the team a little.

I was fine with the benching of JML, it woke him up, and I am fine with the 4th line move for Duchene (he now has 9 points in the last 8 games, so it seemed like it worked). Sacco totally shows favoritism with Hunwick because he’s definitely played every game this year… oh wait. I don’t really show how he has shown favoritism for McLeod. I hate all the stupid penalties he takes, but he is really the only type of tough guy/grinder that we have (on offense), and we need some of that.

All I see is an impatient rant by a fan who apparently doesn’t understand the process of the rebuild and who doesn’t realize that it could be much worse. The fact that you have threatened to not like the Avs anymore may speak to how much of a fan you are. I don’t care how they are run I will love them no matter what. Consider yourself lucky that you have an NHL team that you love AND live by and that you have the opportunity (and choice) to spend your hard earned money. All this rant has shown me is that many Avs fans were initially spoiled and may or may not be true fans. I hear “FIRE SACCO HE JUGGLES THE LINES TOO MUCH” and then “FIRE SACCO HE DOES JUGGLE THE LINES” or “WE NEED TO GO OUT AND GET A LEGIT TOP 6 WINGER, NOT LINDSTROM” and it pisses me off because it shows ignorance. Do I love to see my team win? yes, will I watch it if they aren’t? yes, will I still like it? yep, because I love my team and the sport. I wish I had the opportunity to go to an Avs game, so honestly, quit your bitching and be patient and thankful, and if you don’t wanna do that, then simply, don’t go to an Avs game.

This brings up an interesting debate. Why do we become fans of a team? Why do we continue to be a fan of a team? Is it really that bad to be a fair-weather fan? What is the definition of a true fan? Is a true fan someone who is married to the team for life through thickness and thin, sickness and health? Or is a true fan someone who supports a team because they are good enough to win and enjoys watching the talent that it takes to win? Or is it something in the middle? Should I still be a fan of the Avalanche if they put together a team of fourth liners just because they are the Avalanche? Or should I expect them to put together a talented team that has the ability to earn my cheers? I guess it should be somewhere in the middle. What do you guys think?

by SCP on Nov 19, 2011 8:48 PM MST up reply actions

I became a fan of the Avs because when they were affiliated with the Hershey Bears I would watch players play a lot for the Bears (Suave, Budaj and Denis) come to mind, and then would see them develop and move on to the NHL. I feel a true fan, is a fan through thick and thin, it should be like true love. A fair weather fan is, as you may have put it perfectly “someone who supports a team because they are good enough to win”. That is at least how I see it.

I don’t care how they are run I will love them no matter what.

I admire this attitude, but I don’t share it. Like a marriage, respect and affection needs to go both ways. Right now I feel taken for granted. I have given them my loyalty and my money and they have returned a “going through the motions” product. It’s little wonder the building is only half full.

I don’t really have a problem with Sacco. His style of hockey is better suited to lower leagues, but with the kids and scrubs he’s been handed, it’s probably all they can execute.

I really don’t have a problem with Sherman. He’s been handed a floor humping budget and he’s been forced into high-risk high-reward decisions in order to put a semi-competitive team on the ice. Beyond the kids and the few holdovers from the prior GM, he’s filled the roster with good guys (e.g., McLeod, Porter, Hunwick, Winnik) and reclamation projects (e.g., Lindstrom, Kobasew, Giguere, even Johnson and Varlamov).

My problem is with KSE management and their choice to bleed this team dry to help finance the expansion of their sports empire. For me, they have one year from the coming trade deadline. Just paying the guys we have more money doesn’t change the basic dynamic. They need to bring in more high-caliber players for top-6 and top-4 duty. If they refuse, I’ll take my heart and wallet elsewhere. I can’t expect KSE to respect me (as one of the Avs fans) if I don’t show my self a little respect too.

Exactly

And you are way of at least in Mcleods case of “being favored” he used to get in the 10- 15 minute ice time mark, and was successful with that ice time. Now he;s getting 5 minutes if hes lucky and was a healthy scratch last game for the first time in his career.

by doug1986 on Nov 20, 2011 12:41 AM MST up reply actions

Actually, he got 10-15 minutes of ice time on a team that was the low-water mark talent-wise in Avalanche history. With that ice time he managed to score a few, but once the Avs picked up a few talented rookies and real third-liners he found his place.

Agree to disagree

You have every right to voice your opinion. Freedom of speech pal, I wouldn’t have it any other way. And I have respect for you standing up and saying what you believe in. Seriously I’m not just feeding you garbage lines, I’m glad that there are concerned members of this community who question the status quo and who bring issues into light for discussion.

Now that you’ve spoken your piece, allow me to speak mine. You say that fans will not tolerate mediocrity. Horseshit. There are 30 NHL teams, and half of them are mediocore at best. Some have been mediocore or worse for 10-15+ years. Hell you can make an argument that the current Avs team isn’t even ‘meh’ but simply plain awful. Lots of teams, and this occurs in all professional sports, are thrust into periods of failure in performance. It sucks when it happens to be your favorite team to be sure! But I believe its not like a few losing seasons is the worst thing that can happen when you consider that many teams will be mediocre for decades, hovering right around .500 and never fully reaching their potential. I believe the St. Louis Blues made the playoffs for 20+ consecutive seasons, yet they were never quite good enough to win some serious hardware. This is a team that has been around for 4+ decades. ZERO STANLEY CUPS. It must’ve been brutal as a fan to watch the same yearly mediocre performance culminate in playoff failure after playoff failure, with no best of class draft picks to show for it no? Sure, Tkachuk, Hull, Weight, MacInnis, Demitra, Pronger etc. were exceptional players who experienced a lot of success in their careers, but their tenure on this team was marred by many many years that ended in disappointment. Ask Edmonton Oilers fans how they felt about their last few seasons. They certainly didn’t like losing as often as they did, but many fans tolerated some serious failure and were patient as the organization piled up on prospects and addressed several needs with minor free agent signings. It appears they’re finally leaving the Western Conference basement and when/IF Edmonton hoists the Cup sometime this decade, fans can rejoice in enduring the bad times and their unwavering hope of better things to come. Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins pulled it off with high draft picks and development didn’t they? Sometimes it takes losing seasons to assess a team’s weaknesses, address them, and finally grow as a cohesive team that must appreciate how much hard work it takes to win. Something that is lost upon many Avalanche fair-weather fans, whom were blessed with very good, competitive teams since the beginning. Few remember just how awful the Nordiques were before relocating to Denver.

If you won’t tolerate a few losing seasons, that is your prerogative. You’ve announced your displeasure from everywhere from the higher-ups in the organization to the coaching staff to the lack of talent/performance by players. You’ve even set a tentative date for your departure from fandom of this team. Good for you! I’m sure KSE will welcome you with open arms and overpriced tickets once this team is a winner again and you want to support them.

by HansoBonanzo on Nov 28, 2011 12:52 AM MST reply actions

I mean come on

Did you really expect that we weren’t eventually going to come crashing back to earth and have to rebuild after losing these caliber of Avs players the past 10 years-

JOE SAKIC
PETER FORSBERG
PATRICK ROY
ROB BLAKE
ADAM FOOTE
RAYMOND BOURQUE
ALEX TANGUAY
PAUL KARIYA
TEEMU SELANNE
RYAN SMYTH

Be it a combination of retirement, trades, free agency, salary cap, KSE tightfisted budget, whatever, we’re a completely different team than we were 10 years ago. And the league is a lot more competitive and different than it was 10 years ago too. Few teams have seen as sharp a drop off in the talent pool as the Avs have, and its gonna take some time to regain that caliber of players, if ever. Sakic Forsberg and Roy alone are some of the greatest players this sport has ever seen, and we were extremely fortunate to have them for as long as we did on a team surrounded by other talented players.

by HansoBonanzo on Nov 28, 2011 1:09 AM MST up reply actions

It’s interesting that you mention those players. None of them save for Alex Tanguay were drafted by Pierre Lacroix. He either traded for them or inherited them when he became the GM of the franchise. I’m wondering if that really is the main problem—our draft class has been marred for so many years be it from being gutted to make a megatrade in the pre-Lockout era or if we just didn’t draft high enough. The current draft picks and developmental youth we have now aren’t even in the best conditions to show what they’ll truly be in the prime of their NHL careers.

As a season ticket holder since their arrival here in Denver, I struggle mightily to justify some of the (mis)management of this team, franchise and even the facilities. How many years have we had the same run-down jumbotron? Granted, the Can is sooooo much better than McNichols, but still. There were years where this team was in the bottom five in points, wins, and overall success YET they (KSE) were more than willing to charge the second highest ticket prices in the league. It’s that kind of stuff that really lets you know as a fan, fair-weather or not, where you stand with a franchise—simply put you’re nothing more than an ATM to fuel their machine (and help them acquire other sports teams in the process).
