A stroll down Fantasy lane (Build a team)
Ok I decided to fantasize a little and see what kind of team I could build within the salary cap. Also using some realistic possible pickups in free agency. (With maybe a pipe dream trade thrown in =)
It's actually pretty interesting how good of a team you can build spending all the way to the salary cap. (Hmm)
So here goes,
Nash - Duchene - Hejduk
(7.8m - 5m - 3m)
Semin - Stastny - Ruutu
( 6m - 6.6m - 4m)
Landeskog - O'Reilly - Galiardi
( 3.5m - 3.5 - 1.5m)
D V G - McClement - Winnik
( .8m - 1.5m - 1.5m)
Forwards come in at 44.7, Hopefully Hishon fits in next year and Galiardi takes that spot on the 4th line LW if not its not the end of the world. Still a good deep forward group. Imagine the intangibles and what each player could bring there. Alex Semin is worth a couple years at 6m its a risk but I think Staz could make use of him.
Defense,
Johnson - Hjda
( 3.5m - 3.2m)
Quincey - O'Brien
( 3.5m - 1.1m)
Wilson - O'Byrne
( 1.5m - 1.8m)
Elliott - .9m
Defense is 15.5 and our Goalies cost us 4 so its a total of 64.2 Million for that roster.
The cap will probably be around 65 million next year if nothing drastic happens. Also this includes each players bonus so we have some room to go over the cap if needed but I am not sure how that works. Most of the guys would be getting raises and would be locked up for a few years so the roster could stick pretty close to that for the next 3-5 years easily. Depending on how well everyone plays and other things we cannot see right now.
I tried to be realistic in giving raises based on what a player is making and their value.. Plus considering how they played so far this year. That's why EJ is not getting 4 or 5 million but got about 1 million more than he makes now.
Pieces I traded to get Nash are.. Jones, Barrie and our 2nd in 2012 plus our 1st in 2013. Yeah it may not be enough or maybe it would be. Also on giving out draft picks.. Nash would be worth it also with this roster or something close we could be a contender based on depth and the ability to roll 3 pretty brutal lines. Add in that 4th line is as good or better than some teams 3rd line. We have depth with Hishon, Galiardi, and Winnik able to move around the line up here and there for injuries as well. I also did this trying to pretty much completely forget that there is even a draft this year. Because with the fact that this years draft is pretty much a bust for us management seems to want to win now. Adding Nash this season plus some luck could get us into the playoffs or at least give us a boost to get back in the fight.
I did not proof read this really well or any of that. So my apologies in advance.
Well flame away.. Agree, disagree.. Make your own..

I think that package could actually get us something. But I think it depends on what the team your making the offer to needs. Jone and Barrie are not scraps and neither is a first or second round pick. If Columbus blows things up at all it could give them a ok replacement at wing. Plus futures to rebuild and work with.
Those players highlight our needs as a team more than who or where we get a specific player. That’s the point I was trying to make. Make one good trade this year to hopefully push us into the playoffs or close. Then add a couple more players through free agency. Hopefully done right we can be close to contending next year depending on how the chips fall.
Elliot?
Were you here last year?
Sorry, I don’t give a crap how well he’s played this hear so far. I’d sooner sign Granato as head coach and let Phillipe Sauve be goaltender before Brian Elliot.
Heh
We are alkingbo about good Elliott. Not bad Elliot
I believe.

Here's my roster done courtesy of Capgeek.com
This would be next season’s roster FYI..
For those too lazy to click, here’s what I’ve got.
Parise – Stastny – Hejduk
Landeskog – O’Reilly – Duchene
Galiardi – McClement – Jones
McLeod – Porter – Winnik
Kobasew
E.J. – Shea Weber
Quincey – O’Brien
Wilson – O’Byrne
S. Elliott
Varly
Giggy
Puts the team at $54.3 million spent leaving plenty of cash for re-signing players and those who would possibly command more in FA. Weber and Parise can be picked up in free agency leaving the Avs to keep top assets that would most likely be sent in trades to acquire those two.
Sig.
Weber and Parise can be picked up in free agency
Their teams are probably going to bend over backwards to keep them, and even if they do hit FA, they’re probably going to want larger contracts than this club will offer them and will most likely choose a contender over us. But man, if we could get them…. pipe dream, I know, but if I could poach two players from the league for this team, they’d be it. Don’t think it’s going to happen – if we want them, we’ll have to trade for them – but I would just about die from joy if we managed to get either. I <3 Parise and Weber.
My dream roster for next year would look like that, but I’d probably swap Duchene and Hejduk and O’Byrne and Elliott. That’s it.

Varly: you're awesome. We love you. Please don't break.
Totally forgot that Weber is an RFA..
however..Parise…like I said this would be the roster if I were in charge. I’d throw an 8-9 mil/yr contract at Parise…he’ll be UFA…NJ won’t be able to pay that kind of money and frankly, they need a #1 Center. Colorado has the money to spare and they need a LW.
To get Weber, since he’s an RFA I don’t think I’d throw him a Q/O…I would however chase after Suter.
This is a fantasy roster after all, not based in reality, and as GM I’d do what was necessary to land them both. Seeing as Pitt needs wingers, I’d see if I could grab a first round pick from them for Jones at the deadline this year. Again..this exercise is fantasy and sees Colorado’s core stay intact.
Sig.
I think EJ has the potential to be a lot like Weber. I do actually like Suter playing next to EJ a lot more. He very well could teach EJ how to play like Weber. A lot of people say that Weber is able to do what he does because of Suter.
I also think the Preds know this and that’s why they are pushing harder to get Suter locked up and taking a gamble with Weber.
I think you can forget about Nash. But put Pariese there. I wouldn’t take Rutuuu but Grabovski. I think Duchene and EJ would command a bit more more. But I like where your head is at.
Parise is captain though… Columbus on the other hand… god knows where their going…
Paul Stastny did, what Paul Stastny does. Score big goals.
part of that is who he has played with
he is HIGHLY underrated

Tavares got 5 mil Its hard to imagine Duchene would command more than him. On EJ if his play picks up I think 3.5 may become 4 but right now he makes 2.6 million so he is still getting a raise for not much in the way of improving his play. I like the Parise swap for Nash though. These rosters are somewhat pipe dreams but GMs make stuff like that happen in building a team. It all depends on if the opportunity is there or not.
Also why I chose Semin because there is a high probability he will make it to free agency if he does not get traded this year. Ruutu is a 50+ almost 60 point winger with grit. He makes 3.8 million now but at 4 and probably more likely singing at 5 million as a free agent. I think he is a smart pickup for the second line.
There are going to be a lot of potential free agents for us this off season and this will all hinge on if management is willing to spend to get the wingers we need.
The reason I chose to make a trade now was to help us this season. Besides driving our pick up.. The farther we go will show how ready this team is to make the playoffs or make a push at the cup. Free agent players will look at that and will sign for different amounts of money based on that factor as well. Look at how Chicago got Hossa?
If we show that we are close and just need a few pieces. We can convince players that they are the missing piece we need along with the draw for a winger of playing next to Duchene or Stastny and even O’Reilly.
They don’t only have to sell the team to the fans but to potential players as well. So I think a move this season is needed.
The best thing about this discussion is that is reminds us all we still have a chance to improve this team and move forward after this year. Even after losing our first this year and regardless of what that pick end up being.
For me anyways.. I need some hope that we can still move forward in this rebuild and that this year is not a complete waste or a serious set back.
I am not even going to pretend to understand or even calculate contracts and extensions and all of that. Just as a gut feeling, I think the Jackets would not take the deal you suggested. I think it is a solid deal offer, but again I am not an expert on this sort of stuff (or anything really). I don’t think Semin would want to come here, he seems to be a guy that enjoys the big atmosphere. I think Rutuu could come but again I am a bit indifferent, but I would rather have Grabovski because he would like to be here. Parise would come here I think. I put 0 stock on the captain issue. Just my opinion. Nothing more.

Why do you think Grabovski would like to be here? Just wondering if there was actually something you heard behind that.
Semin I think we could attract based on our centers and he is friends with Varly. I like Parise but its hard for me to imagine NJ not doing absolutely everything in their power to keep him. I think hes a lot less likely to even see the Free agent market than Semin.
If not Nash for that package I would try around the league for other players as well. Like Ryan.. but a winger close to that caliber. Preferably a power guys like Ryan or Nash to make the forward core a little stronger. Ruutu fits that bill as well being a power forward with offensive ability just not as good of a scorer as the other two. Grabo is another small second line forward just looking at his size.. 5’11" 183 (I know nothing about how he actually plays)
I would love a line of Parise – Stastny – Ruutu though.. Talk about scoring power and tough to play against. I guess with that you could see how (Duchene – Hishon – Nash/Ryan) goes. That line has a lot of potential as well. I think Hishon is more of a playmaker than Duchene is so I would at least try him at center between those two.
All in all I think we need to trade for a solid top 6 winger that will “NOT” be available as a free agent. Then we have a chance at actually picking up two more wingers.. two of (Parise, Semin, Ruutu, Grabovski) and the team is all of the sudden seriously dangerous. It’s a pipe dream but one of those that actually has a small possibility of happening if management goes for it.
Oh I also think this team needs a boost now and what better time to do it.. When we are within sniffing distance of a playoff spot. Plus with another winger to play with Duchene and Staz we get a 3rd line of Galiardi – McClement – Winnik.. That line alone would be fun to watch..
If I was the GM, I’d be going after a top 6 power forward to play with Duchene and Stastny. They’ve been playing well with Winnik – just think if they had someone that could crash the net like that, but had a bit more offensive skill? (And that’s not a knock on Winnik – he’s awesome, but the Gali / McClement / Winnik line is just too much to pass up).

“just think if they had someone that could crash the net like that, but had a bit more offensive skill?”
That is Ruutu in my mind, at least I think being a UFA and in his late 20s he would be the easiest to pickup. I want to trade for a player like that now to give us a better chance at the playoffs as we are close right now.
He said at the beginning of the season, that the Avs would be the only other team he would like to play for. It was his favorite NHL team growing up. Rutuu would definitely add some nasty to this team

Duke’s not going to be around forever, and he’s not exactly a big dude either. Even if Grabo is more of a sniper-type, I think we could find a place for him on our 2nd line. He’s UFA this year, and has said that the Avs are the only team in North America he would gladly go to from Toronto. (PD interview) The guy is 27, is in his 6th NHL season, puts up .612 PPG, is an alternate captain, and scored 29 goals last year (which is still different than 30, but it’s close). Grab him, keep Duke for one more year, find some young whippersnapper power forward (I still like Ottawa’s Colin Greening) or pray Jones gets his act together and stick him on the third line until the Duke leaves or concussions strike.
Dutch – Stazz – Grabo
Landy – Radar – Duke
Gali – JMac – Greening/Jones
Winnik – Malone – Porter/Cody Mac
