Re-alignment - Our World is Changing

Welcome to the Western Conference. We're big, We're fast. And, now there's more of us (as compared to the pigs in the East).

Star-divide

Colorado has a significant change coming. We now have monster teams to play either 5 or 6 times per season in Anaheim, San Jose, and Los Angeles. We also get to see old friends Vancouver, Calgary, and (oh crap) Edmonton on a regular basis. I think we're looking at the best conference in the NHL for the foreseeable future.

It gets worse, there are 8 teams in the conference and only 4 continue on to the playoffs. Eastern teams have a better chance of making the playoffs as there are only 7 teams in the conference and, again, 4 teams make the playoffs.

Personal opinion... This sucks.

Get Puck Daddy's take.

Yeah. It’ll be brutal on my sleep schedule…but that’s part of being a fan. Also sucks that I’ll only really get two chances a year to see them now instead of 6 between Minny and Chicago.

Pros
+Allows for more flexibility should there be a relocation/expansion/both in the short and long terms
+Stronger rivalries (no doubt – I’m a HUGE fan of divisional playoffs)
+Every team plays each other – home & away
+Geography – let’s face it, we aren’t the players having to travel unnecessary miles and this gets rid of that

Cons
- Eastern teams have a better chance of making playoffs
- I live in DC, so I have to deal with inconvenient game times

My personal conclusion: The cons are real heavy, but I can understand the mindset of those involved even if I don’t agree with it. I’ve already buckled down and I’m excited for the season to come.
If something as trivial as the Colorado Avalanche having to work extra hard to make the playoffs is my worst news of the week, then bring it on

Go Avaranche!

So 50% of the West will miss the playoffs (8 of 16 teams) while 43% of the East misses the playoffs (6 of 14). And this is fair how?
And what if 6 teams in conference A have better records then the teams on Confernce B….teams with good records get screwed out of the playoffs.

Datsyuk may have done it first, but he learned it from Peter Forsberg.

I can’t see this lasting… either a) phoenix moves in year or so, or b) expansion. I see that as a pretty temporary problem.

Same problem the NFL has, look at the NFC west. there’s no perfect system, I’m just glad we won’t have to play minnesota so damned much. Pro’s and Con’s.

For me personally, it’s a lot more games starting at 8pm, after the munchkin’s go to bed :D

I think that they do plan an expansion. 2 teams to each 7 team conference and we are done. Kansas and Quebec?

Phoenix to Seattle
Expansion: Quebec and Hartford OR Hamilton

It's odd.

I spent a lot of time in the NW. Lived there practically all my life. Grew up in a Denver family though so my loyalties always landed with those teams. I dislike(d) the Seahawks, Supersonic, and Mariners. I have to say though, I’d totally watch a team in Seattle, I’d much prefer it was Portland though. I feel that they deserve a team a bit more.

by Randy Time on Dec 6, 2011 2:26 AM MST up reply actions

I think the main stubling block for Seattle getting a team would be part of the reason the Sonics left town and that was the Key Arena isn’t what a major league team wants. Not that I have spent much time in Portland but I don’t know if it is as much of a hockey town. But then again I don’t get a hockey vibe much here in the Seattle area even though they do have two WHL teams in the metro area. Speaking of which I need to figure out when I can catch a game up in Everett.

I spent some time in Portland, Seattle, and Spokane (lived in the NW for a large portion of my life), and I think Portland is a way underrated city. Their WHL team has an amazing fan base, whereas Seattle’s leaves a lot to be desired. I watched the Spokane Chiefs play a lot and their arena is amazing. Constantly packed, great atmosphere, and most importantly, that is all during regular season. Went to some playoff games for the T-Birds, their arena was much smaller and was about half full. Not a lot of support there. And to be fair, the Canucks are so close to Seattle that that is practically Seattle’s team anyway. Hell, the Nucks even have the same colors as the Seahawks and T-Birds. Portland would garner a lot of interest as they don’t have any major sports other than the NBA there. It’s really a great city that deserves a second look.

Sig.

by Randy Time on Dec 6, 2011 3:36 AM MST up reply actions

I grew up in Washington being a Avs fan because we did not have a team. So I might be a little bias but.. Why the F*.. Does Portland “Deserve” a team more than Seattle?

Hockey is huge in the NW and besides like I have seen a few people say. The rivalry with Vancouver would be fricken awesome.

by CobraAcesS on Dec 6, 2011 12:51 PM MST up reply actions

As I stated above: Portland has..the NBA, that’s it. Seattle meanwhile has proven they can’t even handle the NBA. I think a team in Portland would flourish more so than it would at Seattle at this point. While I fully support a team going to either Seattle or Portland, an NHL team in Portland would add diversity to major sports league in that immediate area. The “deserves a team more” comment is more in reference in how the city is having problems managing the teams it already has. All I’m saying, is Portland shouldn’t be blown off. I’m a fan of both cities and either city getting a team would be a win in my book.

Sig.

by Randy Time on Dec 7, 2011 6:08 AM MST up reply actions

The main problem with Portland getting NHL is they are going against the NBA at the same time. And Seattle could have handled the NBA but there were a ton of shinanagines going on in backrooms that cost the team in the long run. Also the Portland Metro area is much smaller than Seattle and with less people to draw from I don’t think there is going to be a big push to expand there especailly given the lack of a history of the NHL there. But honestly I don’t think either city will get at team before they repopulate the Canadian cities.

by tibbar on Dec 7, 2011 6:31 AM MST up reply actions

As Jibs pointed out, the arena mess was what did the team in as well. The Portland metro area is smaller in a sense, Seattle is just so freakin spread out. Seattle is the bigger city overall for sure, but that’s also one reason I like Portland. It’s not a huge city but the fans certainly come out to watch the Winterhawks. That’s just a tiny WHL club. The Thunderbirds don’t draw much interest and go really unnoticed (from my own experiences, they may have garnered more interest since). Plus the T-Birds having a tiny arena in Kent (that’s where they played when I saw them) doesn’t help. Just from my understanding it appears that Portland has the larger hockey crowd, while having a smaller fan base to draw from, they have enough fans that could pack an arena already. Seattle just has that overall feel like they don’t care as much about hockey as they do about baseball or football.

Sig.

by Randy Time on Dec 7, 2011 2:21 PM MST up reply actions

Seattle meanwhile has proven they can’t even handle the NBA.

While I see both sides to the Seattle NHL debate, this isn’t exactly true. The owner of that franchise bought the team with almost a sole purpose of moving to OKC and asked the residents fo Seattle for an exorbinant ransom or he’d move them out of town. Seattle fans (smartly) rejected the $1/2B arena, when they just paid for a complete rennovation less than a decade prior, and he picked up his stuff and moved.

Yeah I went to tsn right after they posted the article on it and they had switched Colorado and Dallas, I got really excited, then I refreshed the page a few minutes later only to see it switched back…… not really all that stoked about this. I do like the divisional playoffs though, really really helps fuel the rivalries. Although I feel like this lessens our chances of facing the wings in the playoffs, but if they do a reseeding after the divisional rounds it would be cool to beat them for the cup and skate around in front of them with it……

Landy is a much harder worker, far more complete player. RNH just has sublime offensive talents and is probably going to outscore Landy by quite a bit over their NHL careers. You need both types to win a Stanley Cup but it’s certainly fun to think about what RNH would’ve looked like in Denver.

2) Teams in shitty divisions are going to get screwed if they squeak into the playoffs. They will have a hard time drafting themselves into a good position to be cup contenders. (I know this is not a strong argument but has some validity)

So...

Since they essentially kept the conferences in tact and the final rounds of the playoffs haven’t been figured out yet, why not straight steal the AHL playoff system? That would also allow a 5th team from a division to make the playoffs if they had more points than the division’s 4th place team from within the same conference. Using the current standings and staying in the East, Washington would make the playoffs and Ottawa would miss them, despite the Caps having fewer points. If the NHL used the AHL system, Ottawa would be the 5th team from that division to make it and the Caps would miss the playoffs.

gotcha, I can agree with that

But that messes up their plans for divisional playoffs. You’d have to have out of division playoffs in the first round.

Right

but if you keep the conferences it isn’t like Florida would be playing Dallas or something and it wouldn’t reward a team for their geographical luck of division placements. I still think the best teams should get in and this is one nice little addendum to allow that to happen.

I thought that’s what they were doing. Not having a #5 > #4 clause is just shitty imo

A couple of people have mentioned re-alignment. I think this was set up with the expectation that PHX is going East somewhere. That would give the East one 7 team division and one 8 team division and the West will have the same. Given that PHX is in the far west, that benefits the Avs.

So, Quebec Coyotes or Hamilton Coyotes?

Not Quebec Coyotes…. no, they’ll be the Quebec Nordiques and re-retire Stastny and Goulet and then Sakic and Foote and Forsberg AND THOSE WERE OUR PLAYERS DAMNIT!!!!!

Just watch. It’s going to happen. At least the question of who gets the Jets history will be answered. They’ll give up that legacy and just steal ours instead.

I was being funny there (or at least making an attempt). I’m guessing we would see some kind of re-naming.

BTW, have you completely wrecked your sleep patterns? I figured after 4 days with 3 hours of sleep (or whatever) you’d be unconscious for a couple of days straight.

My body has pretty much adjusted to the point where it’s fine without sleep now. I actually had a hard time falling asleep last night because it had basically forgotten how. 5 all-nighters in 7 days messes you up pretty severely. It’s going to take a while for me to readjust. I have dark circles so bad that it looks like someone punched me, but I’m actually not tired.

He was pretty awesome. We went to the Mount Angel Library (one of his very few in the US) as a class earlier this year. It was pretty cool :)

I think I can get behind this. Its not my favorite but its happening so better find something I like about it!

Vancouver, Los Angeles, and San Jose have been good for a long time but I see them peaking within the next three years or so, leaving room for us to eventually match them. Hopefully we will figure out a way to break our LA curse.

Meanwhile, Edmonton and Colorado will get to learn to hate each other even more. I personally already despise them with the exception of Eberle.

Calgary is by far in the worst position of the group. Poor Tanguay…

And Phoenix feels like the odd man out who will eventually leave our party out west

LA is only just starting to dominate. They’re going to be good for a long time.

I guess what I was saying is that by the time COL and EDM reach their prime, LA, Van and SJ will be getting closer and closer to the end of their primes

So right now, this season, our new conference is the most mediocre.

At exactly what point do you start to realize that life without knowledge is death in disguise?

by SteveHouse on Dec 6, 2011 12:40 AM MST reply actions

True, but with 3 strong teams (VAN, SJS, LAK), 2 rising teams (EDM, COL), and 3 aging and uncertain teams (ANA, CAL, PHX), it will be a dogfight for that 4th playoff spot. With any luck, PHX heads East, and this becomes one of the 7 team divisions.

OK Shermie, time to be the shepherd

by Busted Twigg on Dec 6, 2011 8:55 AM MST up reply actions

Like you, I call complete BS. Good teams come and go so I don’t care about the teams in the conference, but the playoff seeding with 4 teams getting in from each division is fucking retarded.

What if an 8 team division has 6 top shelf teams with EARN a ton of regular season points and one of the 7 team divisions has 6 shitty teams?

So now two shitty teams get into the playoffs and two good (WINNING) teams get screwed? Awesome idea Bettman. Go F yourself.

Tim Tebow is Denver's 2012 starting QB. I'm not even kind of sorry that offends some of you.

by McGeorge on Dec 6, 2011 9:04 AM MST reply actions

I for one actually like our new “conference”.

1. The Avs will benefit because come next year there is a good chance that the Coyotes will be up in Eastern Canada. Making it so that our conference would become a 7 team conference while one of the Eastern conferences will pick up the team in Quebec making it an 8 team conference. The NHL knows this is going to happen and this is why they planned it as such making it an easy transition. Thus you will have 15 teams in the Eastern Conferences and 15 in the Western Conferences.

2. We get rid of Minnesota, god I hate them. So frustrating to watch.

3. The teams in our conference are not as good as people think. Vancouver will go down in a couple season once the sisters get older. LA I think is drastically over-rated. SJ is the only one who really scares me. The Ducks stink and one of their better players is about to retire. PHX won’t be here. Calgary is in rebuild mode. EDM is a question mark, lots of young talent, who knows if they will put it all together. If the Avs can make their team stronger they will be able to compete and compete well.

I think down the road they will have to evaluate the playoff system. As many have pointed out it just doesn’t make sense. As you could have 6 good teams in one conference and only 1 or two in the other but yet under this format 2 good teams could lose out to two bad teams in another conference. I think it will take a couple seasons, but it will get evaluated and changed.
