If you were GM what would you do
I have my opinions on what needs to be done to help this team. We all know the solution is not just one move. I have heard many people say "Fire Sacco" or "Need a trade" or "Fire Sherman" or "Send PL to a retirement center" or "Get a goalie coach". Now, I know we are all very smart people, so explain why you would do what. What would you do if you were GM
I was going t omit my opinion, but that would not be very fair. The very first thing I would do would be to hire a goalie coach. If I was GM, I would protect my investment. I think this trade has my career lifeline on it, as well as it should. really need to get the most value from Varly.
Randytime said he would have a serious meeting with the staff and let them know their careers are in jeopardy. I agree with this, but I think I would have had that meeting already. I have 3 days off before the next game. I think I would let Sacco go, but I would make my way to the room and watch what it was like in there before I make any decisions. The biggest reason I have for letting Sacco go would be 1-9 record in the division this year. We have to many games in the division to maintain that record. Also, the way the season ended last year and what to me looked like a team that stopped caring. Well I saw that same stuff against the Oilers.
This is what I would do. I don't believe I am gripping. It would be just a business decision. However, I know there are other options. I just want to read some other opinions and why they justify their actions.

There are too many things involved in the management of a professional hockey team for me to really be able to answer that question. All I really look for is signs that something positive is being done. I want to wake up to an article tomorrow that says Sacco was fired, or Sherman was fired, or some kind of trade was made.
All I can really ask for as a fan, as a person who has access only to the big picture, is a timely indication that something is being done in an attempt to affect a change for the better. For an Avalanche fan, timely means right now.

We miss you, Wils! And we miss Paully Walnuts, too! Come back healthy and I promise I won’t make any trade proposals for either of you!

Varly: you're awesome. We love you. Please don't break.
(Just finished writing this monstrosity... sorry for the dissertation, but I view you guys as sort of a 12-step support group)
1) Even before the discussion about Sacco comes up, I would get rid of Lefebvre. I’m sorry, but in the last 3 years, our defense has gone from (1) a heap of nothingness to (2) a small, puck-moving focus to (3) the biggest damn D-group in the league and yet if you showed me clips from any of the last 3 years, I could be forgiven for not knowing which year I was watching. The first two goals tonight (against the Oil), their player literally skated right into our crease and had multiple attempts against only Varly because Quincy (on the first) and then Winnik and Quincy (on the second) stood still and chose to use their sticks instead of their bodies to resolve the situation. Bring me a defensive-minded coach who can create solid positioning systems. The puck-movers have the skills to figure the offensive side on their own
2) Get a FT goalie coach. Obvious answer with reasons already expressed at MHH for far too long.
3) Figure out the KIND of player Duchene can excel with (not just “the best player”) and acquire him through trade or—looking ahead—FA signing. This isn’t about wanting Toews to center with Dutchy on the wing (though, c’mon… a dreamer can dream). This about determining what skill-set will compliment the talent of Duchene. As I’m flying by the seat of my pants in writing this I don’t have any suggestions right this second, but if I were a highly-paid GM, you can bet your bottom dollar that I would be asking my scouts and reviewing tape every single night.
4) Give O’Reilly a solidified “A”. Sure this may be a coach’s call, but look at what’s been done already: EJ clearly can exert himself as a factor on the ice (sometimes frustratingly). Silent Jay seems like a guy who doesn’t fuck around and knows what he’s doing in this league. I don’t have the foggiest idea why McLeod was ever given an “A” (or is still dressing for the team for that matter). But if you want to reward commitment and attitude that will help guide the future of this franchise, why oh why isn’t O’Reilly given the opportunity to do what comes naturally to him: lead by example.
5) NOW I’d get rid of Sacco. A big problem for me this season has been the (what seems like) avoidance of our defensive group to recognize and use their natural size in our favor. However, there’s one other problem that seems to creep into view far too often: the Avs have no ability to adapt. The gameplan that was executed against New Jersey was the same one put into place in Vancouver: strong forecheck, dump-and-chase, speed through the neutral zone, and shots from the point. The difference? Vancouver realized our plan and 1) got the puck out of the zone quickly, 2) clogged up the neutral zone, and 3) forced the play/shots away from the slots and more along the boards. Our difference? Once Vancouver started shutting us down, we didn’t change our approach. For some reason, we kept lobbing the puck into the zone, they scooped it up, got it out quick and created chances against us. That, to me, was the story of the 3rd period. We wanted to grind out a comeback, and they knew exactly how to deal with us.
One of my favorite “quotes” (if you want to call it that) is “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” Sacco is unable to change his approach based on the team he plays.
6) Fire the Pepsi Center’s in-game marketing team and replace them with pet rocks. I love watching my team play at home, but I’ll be damned if we don’t have the stupidest and “least-getting-your-team-fired-up” commercial/intermission break games on the planet. Give me a DJ who plays music that can get you fired up instead of acting like a top-40 radio DJ. Give me some giveaways that aren’t simply shirts or vouchers for the Denver Post (oh, and don’t only give them to people in the lower-bowl or club section… how about the die-hards in the nosebleeds!) And, for the love of Spaghetti Monster, bring back Lauren Gardner (or someone of equal beauty and sports smarts). The current blonde (I haven’t even looked up her name because she bores me so much I can’t even be angry at her) is so lifeless and dull that I honestly feel ashamed if I’m sitting near out-of-town fans. “No, seriously, there are stunningly beautiful and smart women here! Honest!”
7) (Seriously, when I started writing this, it was only going to be about Lefebvre) On the same note as #6, LOWER THE DAMN TICKET PRICES! I understand economics (in a macro/micro 101 sort of way). I get that you might be drawing more profit in by selling a thousand fewer tickets at a higher price than if you dropped the price and sold-out a game. I get that. But if you filled the Can every night with people who could get behind a team, with motivation to be noisy, and had incentive to buy a jersey with “this crazy kid who hustles nonstop”s name on the back… how does that not create more profits in the long run (hell, not even the long run, from month-to-month that seems like a more lucrative way to display a sports franchise). Guy’s night out and family night’s are a simple and smart way to bring in people on a whim… but they’re only taking up 10 sections of the upper bowl. Is it that hard to offer a local kids’ sports team (any sport) bundle on a regular basis? Good grades discount for kids up through high school. Half-price for people who go to one of the 3 colleges DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET FROM YOUR SPORTS ARENA! Buy one Avs ticket get a ticket to the Nuggets/Mammoth/Rapids for half-price (and vice-versa).
I’m sorry. I had a few drinks after that dismal loss to Edmonton tonight… I’m not even angry so much as frustrated with seeing the same things happen in practically every loss so far this season. I see the talent in the core of this team. I know the ceiling can be incredibly high for guys like Duchene, O’Reilly, Varly, Johnson, and Elliott. I just get this unnerving feeling that there are too many logjams that are stifling the growth of our young team. And beating a dead horse is no way to fix it.

I'm such a huge fan of the Avs I can name who our goalie was FOUR seasons ago! Crazy, right?!

Very well put.
I agree with everything you said.
This is a rebuilding club, so I expect us to finish 15-20th in the league. Not great, but reasonable considering where we were last year. Currently, we’re at 25th and are 3 points away from the 20th spot. We’re also only 6 points (accounting for ROW) out of the playoffs. Can we make it there with our current set-up? Yes, but not if we play like we did last night.
Sure, fatigue and injuries had something to do with it, but that was just BAD hockey. And the worst part is, it’s not the first time we’ve seen such terrible hockey this year. Since the NJ game, I’ve been pleased with the team. Even in the VAN and CGY losses, we looked like we cared and played hard for the full 60 minutes even if we couldn’t get the puck to fall. Last night, we looked like we didn’t care. That bothered me. All I ask for with this team is progress towards getting better and to try to win every night. They don’t even have to win; they just have to make an attempt. If they try hard and get beat 6-0 by a more talented team? Fine. The look listless against a team that we should be able to beat? Not fine.
I wouldn’t be quite as bothered if we still had our first round pick. I still like the trade – I think Varly’s going to be great in a few years – but this means that we MUST finish above 20th. I don’t think it’s time to make the extreme changes just yet, and it probably won’t be until All-Star break or the Trade Deadline. But I would like to see some easy fixes being attempted now.
Easy fixes: Full-time goalie coach, rotating A’s for O’Reilly and O’Brien, another closed room meeting with the team, drop ticket prices to bring in more fans and make the crowd larger and louder
More extreme fixes if things don’t improve: Fire Lefebvre, Trade for winger, Fire Sacco, Fire Sherman
I’m pissed at the team right now and I do think some things need to change. But that doesn’t necessarily mean we have to start canning people right away. Our position isn’t that dire yet, although I’d be surprised if Sherman has started testing the waters as far as new coaches are concerned. However, this summer, this team needs some fresh blood. If I’m expecting 20th this year, I’m expecting playoffs next year and I’m not sure Sacco, Lefebvre, McLean, and our current group of wingers can get us there.
Also, as a side note, I’m worried about EJ and Varly. If I was Sherman, I’d be doubly worried. They aren’t playing so hot right now, and he’s pretty much staked his legacy on how those two 23-year-olds do. I hope he’s looking at making possible coaching changes to help them out in order to save his own ass if nothing else.

Varly: you're awesome. We love you. Please don't break.
If I’m the GM the first thing I do is either A) fire Sacco and bring in a coach that can get the most out of the talent we have or B) trade for the players that would be able to produce in the systems we are currently using. As a fan looking from the outside in I would say option A) would be best. Randy Carlyle is who I would look at first because he has experience making teams dominant on defense. Although he could be too similar to how Sacco coaches.

A) Hire a goalie Coach
B) Replace Sacco and his assistants

Personnel is the biggest thing.
If I was GM…
Guys I would keep no matter what:
Duchene, Landeskog, O’Reilly, Winnik, Elliott, Johnson, Quincey, Hejduk
I think these players along with a guy like Duncan Siemens if he develops as we all hope form a nice core. Not to say I do not like some of the other pieces the Avs have but I think as of now this is the core. I’m not yet sold on Varly, he is incredibly athletic but has to find some consistency. The biggest key here is to add to the core in a cost effective manner in order to keep the team together once they learn how to win. Basically, go find a finisher or two, preferrably with a bit of size.
The Avs need to add some scoring depth on the wings (where have we heard that before?) and it is a shame they won’t have their draft picks to work with this year. I’m not trying to bash the Varly trade because it could still work in the Avs favor. as GM it would be priority #1 this offseason to find some wingers to play with either Stastny and O’Reilly (moving Duchene permanently to wing) or to try to package Stastny for a good 1st rounder. Easier said then done and if they can keep Stastny I would be happy because I feel he plays an underrated game (he does need to put up some more points though)
I don’t think Sacco is the problem. I think the Avs are a young team that is trying to learn how to win consistently in the NHL. You look at this team and there are only a handful of guys who have won meaningful tounaments or games in their careers. It takes time and experience to learn how to do this. Certainly Sacco makes some mistakes but he can only play the hand he is dealt. I’m sure he doen’t want to have to use Matt Hunwick on a wing.

1) Inspired by the events of Rocky V; I would have ownership sign paperwork entitled “One-ply toilet paper + .50 cents more per beer Saves money that can be transferred to Nuggets Account.” However, it would really be a contract that signed over the complete franchise to some ego-manical, competitve, Stanley Cup winning goalie name Patrick, that way goalie coach and head coach and owner who gives a fuck have all been satisfied in one stroke of a pen.
2) Clean out my office and await the fans to erect a statue of me in front of the Can, which they will have already renamed the Shane.
In unison: "Wonder twin powers Activate!" Varly: "Form of Goal"; Giggy: "Shape of Tending."
Does it really matter to the avalanche that they finish above 20th, but don't make the playoff?
I wouldn’t be quite as bothered if we still had our first round pick. I still like the trade – I think Varly’s going to be great in a few years – but this means that we MUST finish above 20th.
We may still get a very high caliber player in the early second round (assuming we are not giving to washington)?
If you were GM what would you do?
