Peter Forsberg to Announce Retirement
Breaking (and shocking) news:
The Avalanche have just issued a release that Peter Forsberg will be holding a press conference today at 2:30 at the Pepsi Center to announce his retirement from hockey. Happy Monday, everyone.
And thanks for giving it a go, Peter. The career was tragically too brief, but it was a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

Shocking because he looked good out there. Not shocking because we all knew this could happen at any time with his health past. Glad he’s hanging them up as an Av. Now it’s just a matter of putting the jersey in the rafters.

Funny thing, talk radio on two stations this morning were talking Avs. That never happens, and it was because tonight Peter was playing at home. Oh well. I guess we can all sit back and watch at the rest of the league’s dickhole fans laugh and say “we told you so.”

Dude, that’s not entirely fair. I go to games all the time and I see them all the time. I would have watched them at home tonight because (1) it’s a Monday and (2) I can’t really afford it. Knowing that his games might be limited, I decided to spend the money to go tonight just in case. Looks like the just in case part was right but I was too late. It’s pretty harsh to say “That’s what I get.” He’s my all-time favorite player in the whole world and a big reason why I started following hockey in the first place. Why wouldn’t I buy tix to a game like tonight?
And for the record, this has upset me so much that I’m tearing up. And I don’t mean not seeing him; I mean him retiring. But that’s how much I love the guy.

Well you can’t blame the team for giving him a shot, he looked good in practices and the games, but now they’ve got to pony up and move assets if they want to get back into thick of things. 9 points out, 26 left, normally I’d say they are screwed, but they only have 2 eastern conference games left so the rest are against the teams they’re competing against for that last spot. If they chose to go into the tank this season will be worse than the season that didn’t happen only because that season is still fresh in people’s minds.

I’ll rephrase: You write a crappy blog post reveling in the fact that a player has to retire because of injury. Reveling in the effect it’ll have on the team. You come over and make some jerky comments about it on a fan website. You leave up the crappy blog post, rolling around in classlessness. But you come back over here and want to whine about how you shouldn’t have been crass here. Fine, but don’t expect me to hold your beer while you cry in it about what a jerk you were.
My comment before was more succinct, but it was essentially the same.

I’m glad he tried. Not only did he try he gave it all and left it all on the ice. All of you saw the way he played. He played like the old Forsberg we remember:battling it out each shift, fighting for position, and doing a damn good job of it. He wanted his level to be up there so he knew that if his body failed it wouldn’t because he was scared of giving it all. F’in eh for his guts to show that he has the heart to leave it all out there on the ice. Wish him the best and look forward to the Alumni night because I’ll definitely be there.

Well, that makes me wish I went to the game here in Nashville even more.
He was great for the few short game he played in a Preds uniform, and is one of the best. I was thinking he’d play out the rest of the year for the Avs, even if it meant limited minutes.
Thank you for trying Peter, we know you’d give anything to keep playing, and I’m glad I got to see my favorite player lace em up one last time. I wish you could’ve held on one more night. But when it comes down to it, we understand, and respect the fact that you would never play, if you couldnt play your best. Tonight I’ll be wearing my Foppa jersey that you signed a few weeks ago. Thanks for trying one last time

Since the Avs are gonna lose tonight anyway…
don’t scratch Foppa, give him one last shift and let him score an empty-net goal with 21 seconds remaining no matter what the result is. The Flames franchise would gain a lot of respect (and they need that).
Besides that, everything has been said. Watching this announcement won’t be as tough as Sakic’s retirement (who didn’t have tears in his/her eyes?) but it won’t be fun either.

Love ya, Forsberg. Thanks so much for helping me love the greatest game in the world.
Is Peter Forsberg a Hall of Famer
Let’s compare his stats to another Hall of Famer whose career ended much too soon as a result of injuries
Cam Neely – 694 points in 726 games
Forsberg – 885 points in 708 games
Without question he belongs in the Hall. Farewell Peter, oh, what could’ve been.

I wonder if it was truly health (obviously with Forsberg this always seems likely) or if he took a look around the morose, losing locker room he had signed up for and had second thoughts about if he wanted to be a part of it, especially after it continued despite his return. We all know how losing torments him. But I suppose there’s no point in speculating. I’ll take him at his word.
Thanks for everything Peter the Great and good luck with life after hockey…
My theory: no matter how good he was playing, he wasn’t playing at the level he wanted to play nor the minimum level he expected of himself. He knew he wouldn’t ever get there. So he hung ’em up.

It’s unfortunate that both Sakic and Foppa didn’t have that opportunity to skate one last lap around the ice and have a proper farewell before retiring. But I empathize with Peter’s reasons for retiring before playing in front of you Avs fans. He couldn’t tug on your heart strings. Speaks volumes of his character.

Strange…even though I never really expected Forsberg to come back before the announcement that he was practicing in Denver, there’s something about watching his retirement announcement that’s leaving an empty place in my heart. It’s really strange to think we’ll never see him play again. And really sad. He was a force of nature on the ice.
Peter, we’ll miss you. Thank you for every moment you gave us.
How long can I stay in denial that one of my heroes will never play again?
An ounce of confidence can carry you a mile toward winning. Oh, and Red Wings suck.
I may not be an Avalanche fan
But as a hockey fan, Peter Forsberg is a player who I will never forget if I’m lucky enough to live to 100.
