Good move, goalie is the most glaring hole on this team, by far. /sarcasm

I am not sure this is an upgrade.
Good Luck to Anderson! Hope he gets his mojo back there.
2010-2011 Colorado Avalanche: Defying Corsi
Judging just by personal stats to this point, Elliott looks like a slight downgrade. But we all know Andy hasn’t been the same since his knee injury, so Elliott might actually be better long-term.
Not that anything this team does is long-term when it comes to goalies.
Mile High Hockey: A lot more fun to watch than the Avalanche.
Generally a player for player swap isn’t a upgrade. Either team could come out the winner on this. Personal opinion – Andy is the better goalie. Mainly because I just hate the sens

Rediculous. Why make a move for another average goalie instead of a move for a D-man??
Let the new season begin already!!!
Because Andy would’ve been gone after the season anyway. Now they’ll give a younger version of Andy a chance in those last 20 or so games.
AVS. HEALTHY. WHEN.
Elliot has made a flashy save or two, but he is not a very good goalie

We’ll see that soon. While I hoped that we can get a bit more in return if Andy is traded, I think this is better than doing nothing and letting him go after the season.

So much for trading him to a contender and actually getting something back in return. I can’t say I’m impressed by this move. Not one bit.

This is an ugly move. I see someone above said Anderson “blew” his opportunity…I will disagree heartily and say we don’t know what happened with him this season. Injuries, the “personal matter,” playing behind this D. I don’t think he “blew” anything.
As for Elliot? Ugh…

FUN FACTS
Elliot has a moose on the back of his helmet because he was taught the art of moose calling by the late champion moose caller, Owen Scott
Elliot also has Casey Jones, TMNT on the back of his helmet. Casey Jones is one of my favorite Dead songs, so that’s a plus.

Vancouver wants Elliot as a backup and the next move is for Schneider? I’m grasping at straws here. As probably are the Avs.

I still question whether Vancouver would ever make that deal….. if they have ANY faith in Schneider, why trade him to a division rival?
Trues, but with 6 years still on Luongo’s contract, Schneider ain’t staying with Vancouver
Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
absolutely, I could see them moving him because they know he can play somewhere, but there’s going to be a ton of other teams that aren’t in their division they can send him to. If I were Vancouver, Colorado might be the last place I’d send a promising goalie.
I have that feeling as well
At least I hope they wouldn’t trade him within the division. And if they did I hope it was for a much steeper price

Please let this not be a Raycroft Budaj situation all over again…this screams cheap/money saving…I’m all for rebuild but they need to go and sign someone this summer before I see all their moves as cost effective and bargain first.
by amit916 on Feb 18, 2011 9:01 AM MST via mobile reply actions
We have seen Andy at his best
and it was last year.
This year he has been garbage, at least since the injuries, and in today’s NHL a bargain goalie can compete for the cup (re: Niemi vs Leighton/Boucher (he did get them there)) so in retrospect, I’d be happy to watch Elliot and Budaj lose games and get something if Elliot signs elsewhere in the summer, than watch Andy and Budaj lose games and get nothing when Anderson signs with an AHL team
NIemi also had a hell of a defense in front of him. Niemi with this D in front wouldn’t have gone far at all.
Avs win. When?
Exactly
Gone are the days of Roy, Hasek and Broduer.
Today anyone can be goalie, you just need the defense.

Check the stats
Elliot had a good year last year (29-19, 2.57 GAA, 5 shutouts). No that’s not vezina worthy but its not bad. This year he is playing for an abysmal Ottawa team, so I don’t think it’s fair to say he’s the Suxxorz.
And I would wager the Avs defense is FAR more abysmal this year…and last year behind an almost equally abysmal defense, and without injuries and personal problems, Andy dwarfed Elliot.
Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
personal problems
That’s a part of the issue. If Avs know the specifics of these “personal problems”, it may make sense to cut him loose.

by Sandie Gauthier on Feb 18, 2011 10:28 AM MST up reply actions
True. But then, maybe the solution was to get him off the team.
Goalie Guild had an interesting take on him:
In Anderson, I see a goalie who no longer has the same work ethic he displayed and sustained all of last season. He has allowed frustrations to overwhelm his mind and he no longer has the intense, fiery focus and attitude that made him successful last year.
…
This year, I just haven’t seen that second effort and that intense work ethic anymore. … He becomes disinterested or defeated after a goal is allowed and he doesn’t seem as engaged afterwards. In practices, many viewers and scouts say that he doesn’t work nearly as hard as last year. I’ve heard this from a number of people and I’ve seen it for myself on more than a couple of occasions.
Maybe it was better for him to leave. You know, fresh start.
Thanks for the memories, Peter.

How do you get “body language” from “doesn’t work nearly as hard as last year”? Body language is when we think he gets all sad or mad after giving up a goal. Not working as hard is just that – evaluating his effort in practice last year and comparing it to his effort this year. What don’t you understand about the difference between the two?
Finally, I wanna thank God, because God gave me this Dundie. And I feel God in this Chili's tonight.
by Dan Winkler on Feb 18, 2011 10:57 AM MST up reply actions
I should have phrased that differently
I understand your skepticism if the scouts had said they don’t like his body language, and that it was different this year than last. But it seems to me that the comment about not working as hard in practices this year is quantifiable, which is why I don’t think it’s just pop psychology.
Finally, I wanna thank God, because God gave me this Dundie. And I feel God in this Chili's tonight.

Perception bias. We perceived he was working hard last season and he was playing well. We perceived he wasn’t this season when he wasn’t. The hard evidence would be something along the lines of “Last season he stayed late at practice, or he did these specific things.”
As far as I can tell the evidence is “he just looks different” which is as easily explained with perception or confirmation bias as it it with him actually working differently.

Jibble there’s about 279472893 pieces of evidence to back up what I said about Anderson. And I’m clearly capable of absorbing and understanding a goalie’s attitude. That’s what goalie scouts do. His demeanor was terrible and every time I watched him practice, he didn’t have nearly the kind of work ethic he had last year. Budaj out-works him almost on a daily basis. I’ve heard this from so many analysts and scouts its not even funny and I’ve seen it for myself every single practice I’ve gone to.
It’s blindingly clear Anderson’s frustrations and lack of support from the defense caused him to lose the fire. It’s not that hard to see in the way he reacts to goals against, his body language , etc. How in the world you consider that pure pop-psychology and “0 evidence” is strange to me. What more proof do you need? Every goal he allows he looks like he cares less and less.
There’s nothing positive in that.
Plenty of evidence to back it up. I see it every single game.
Think about this.
Sacco’s questionable decisions to pull Budaj and put in Anderson in the Calgary game. Anderson hadn’t skated in 5 days due to his “personal leave” … he’s rusty and not ready for game action.
Sacco throws him into the fire without warning in the Calgary game. He could have waited until intermission and given Anderson time to mentally prepare and stretch. He didn’t. That’s a TERRIBLE decision…and something that I think was the straw that broke the camel’s back. If I were Anderson, I’d be furious in that situation. You just don’t do that to your goalie.
There’s all the evidence you need that Anderson was CLEARLY unhappy and frustrated with this situation. His attitude and demeanor and body language had been reflecting that unhappiness for weeks.
It doesn’t take a psychologist to understand that.
by TheGoalieGuild on Feb 18, 2011 12:01 PM MST up reply actions
So this kind of relates to what I was thinking about him sick of seeing this many shots every year. Or frustration that ever shot he seems to see is the oppositions best shot.
And if Anderson didn’t care, didn’t try, or was just frustrated or whatever…and Budaj outworked him in practice and in games, and still has similar stats…what does that say about our team as a whole? Especially defensively. Yuck
Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
His demeanor was terrible and every time I watched him practice, he didn’t have nearly the kind of work ethic he had last year.
Beachie can actually attest to this. I remember one of her practice reports (at the very least) mentioning that Andy didn’t look like he was trying very hard.

Two examples:
http://www.milehighhockey.com/2011/1/11/1928877/practice-notes-tuesday-jan-11-2011
Budaj was making some really nice glove saves today. Andy, on the other hand, was letting in some soft goals and really didn’t seem too upset about it like he would be in the past. I’m not sure how much goalies relax during practice, but I don’t think Andy was even close to giving it a lot of energy and focus.
http://www.milehighhockey.com/2011/1/19/1944485/practice-notes-wednesday-january-19
Andy sometimes (okay, often) relaxed on the plays, not going into full butterfly mode; Boods was his usual, hard-working self
Could be more; I didn’t search that hard.

We hashed a lot of this out on twitter, so I won’t say too much. I do think I can more clearly articulate what I mean here, and there’s an audience here that may not have followed our debate, so I’ll respond.
Anderson looks frustrated. I agree with this statement
Anderson hasn’t played well I agree with this statement as well
Anderson isn’t playing well because he’s frustrated This is where people start to lose me. I can just as easily say “Anderson is frustrated because he’s not playing well” and there’s just as much evidence to support that as the complete opposite.
I have my own hypothesis: Anderson started the season off, and lost his confidence when he came back from injury. Everything I see, the “lack of fire” the body language, makes me believe he’s suffering from a lack of confidence, not disinterest or poor work ethic or anything. Granted I haven’t been to as many practices as you, but everything you mention above (lack of work ethic, etc) falls in line with a lost his confidence hypothesis as well.
But again that’s a hypothesis, and pop-psychology as well. I shouldn’t have said 0 evidence above, but all the evidence that supports your hypothesis, and mine, is circumstantial, highly subjective and extremely prone to confirmation/perception bias.
That’s the problem with other comments I’ve seen saying “He looks indifferent” and “he doesn’t care” and “he doesn’t have the fire”. They are entirely subjective. I could say “He looks relaxed” “He lost confidence” or “He looks focused” and every single interpretation is a completely acceptable one.

More amateur psychology
I may be wrong, but wouldn’t a lack of confidence be accompanied by an increase in work habits in order to regain that confidence or improve to the point where he becomes more confident? Or, would his lack of improvement after working hard put him into more of a funk that would spiral into a further decrease in confidence and the possibility of just giving up after seeing everything go so wrong?

I see your point, but I think it’s weird that they’d decide that they’d get rid of Boods, a guy who’s been in the organization forever and who, by all accounts, is a great teammate. I understand the team likes to save money, everyone does, but it seems weird. Maybe saving 350k isn’t so weird.
But maybe they’ve decided that Budaj’s never gonna be a #1, and maybe they think Elliott has a bigger upside.

I was thinking, and...
While this trade is pretty lateral, Elliot is two important things that Anderson is not:
1. Young and
2. Signed through next season
That means that Elliot could be used in a trade this summer as his contract doesn’t expire. It guarantees that we get something for Anderson as opposed to waiting for the off season when he could sign anywhere as a UFA. And Elliot’s youth makes him more attractive in a trade assuming he doesn’t completely suck.
HUNWICK. WHY.
DECENT OFFICIALS. WHEN? NEVER.
I thought
This was the last year of Elliot’s contract, RFA at season’s end. But maybe I’m wrong.
No
You are right he is a RFA this summer but that still gives the AVs first shot at him.
Let the new season begin already!!!

But yeah, as an RFA we are in no danger of losing him if we don’t want to.
HUNWICK. WHY.

Vokoun
he’s dealt with playing in FL long enough… a young developing team shouldn’t be much different.

Because imo he wont be. The Avs may go the rest of the year with Budaj/Elliott, but something tells me there may be more to those Schneider/Bernier rumors.
My belief is that Budaj will be gone in the off-season and Elliott will be the backup. He’s still young and perhaps something will develop. Either way, the new starter comes via free agency or trade.
At this point, none of the Avs goaltending prospects are a viable options. So acquiring the 2011-12 starter via free agency or trade makes sense. I don’t think they play on going with Elliott/Budaj for next season unless they want to draft in the top five in 2012.

FLAWS: Lacks consistency. Not very pro-active with his stick, he also isn’t very proficient at puck-handling. Doesn’t challenge shooters enough and can lose his positioning at times.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Talented goaltender with consistency issues.
Sounds like a young dude, maybe he can pull it together, it does take longer for goalies than the other positions. I just I’m ok with the trade, it doesn’t excite me or make me upset. Rather a ‘meh’ type of thing.
Each of my replies is a work of art, each more brilliant than the last.

On the plus side, we’re no longer going to be grasping at straws like mental state, body language, disinterest or brand of pads to justify why our top goalie was a sieve.

I’ll believe it when the Leafs officially announce it.
I make music. I don't think it's despicable, do you?
Does Toronto get its pick back?

No. That pick is on the table, but not for Kabs.
I make music. I don't think it's despicable, do you?
That’s pretty steep. Colborne is a beast.

Of course, some Toronto fans are saying they want Wheeler too or else it’s not enough.
Avs win. When?
I thought Boston was trying to move Wheeler elsewhere to make space for Kaberle.
I make music. I don't think it's despicable, do you?
Toronto fans have no logic in their wants. Colborne and a first sounds decent for Kaberle.
Avs win. When?
sounds more than decent

Your 2010-11 Colorado Avalanche: Eating it with Elliott.
The A-hole formerly known as Andykrist. Only the name has changed.
I'm worried about Boods. AND Winnik.

Facts have nothing to do with it, but I'd HATE to see Boods go.
Thanks for the memories, Peter.

I would too. If Boods were to go, would the fans and/or the team be interested in him as a full time goalie coach?
Avs win. When?
I think the Avs should be interested in any full time goalie coach. Big problem I have with this team
Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
Yeah.
Thanks for the memories, Peter.

Also:
Elliott has a Visa to work in the U.S., so that wouldn’t delay him playing for the Avs. Makes the Grahame call up a little weirder. Thanks to Jori for the info.
Avs win. When?
But that's not all, says Boston
Wheeler and Stuart to Atlanta for Valabik and Peverley.
I make music. I don't think it's despicable, do you?
FML.
If BOS was willing to sell Wheeler and Stuart that cheap, we sure as hell ought have been in on that.
I wouldn’t have minded Valabik either.
Thanks for everything Foppa!
Randy, Valabik is terrible. He has been here in the AHL (in Chicago) for about 3 years now. He has had a few cups of coffee with Atlanta…but as a hockey player he is pretty bad. He is big, yes…but he can’t skate, he has no shot, he is out of position almost all the time.
Good fighter…that’s about his upside
Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
Other than being big then, he sounds like he’d fit right in on our blueline!

According to the Post
Yip didn’t practice with the team today.
With Stoa called up… another trade on deck? I don’t remember Yip getting hurt against the Pens…
They say the Avs look like smurfs when they wear these jerseys... I just don't see it.

I don’t either, if I remember correctly, he didn’t practice with the Avs last time either, no?

But that was deemed a “maintenance day” if I remember correctly
Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
How often do they give you guys a maintenance day? I;m saying this in terms of a trade, but maybe something has been nagging him?

i think probably he’s playing through some kind of sprain or strain
Thanks Peter.

If true, his recent spell of throwing his body around and generally playing hard hockey is even more striking.

if you’re hurt you’re hurt, normally they dont get many, but if he’s got a nagging injury then it would make sense
Thanks Peter.
