Worst Season Ever?
It's finally in the books. The Avalanche finished up the 2010-2011 season with 68 points, the lowest total since the franchise moved to Denver. The Avs missed the playoffs for the 2nd time in 3 years and have ZERO 2nd-round playoff wins since the lockout. In fact, they have as many playoff wins in the last seven seasons (16) as they did in their first year in Denver.
In other words, we're in a bit of a lull right now folks. The Avs had a grand total of 18 regulation wins (and just FOUR in the 2nd half). The Avs' 227 goals were the 3rd lowest total in Avalanche history and the 1st half vs 2nd half splits were a cliff-dropping 136 to 91. The 288 goals allowed were an Avalanche worst by 31 goals. PK? Worst ever.
Of course, there were mitigating factors. The Avs lost a franchise-record 474 man-games to injury...and these weren't insignificant players on the shelf. Yes, 288 goals is a hell of a lot of goals, but the Avs used three goalies this year - two that aren't starting goalies and one who is but didn't play like one (until he was traded, of course). And, thanks to the injuries, the Avalanche used 17 different defensemen. 17!
There are some positives. The team toughness was upgraded substantially this year with additions like Ryan O'Byrne and Erik Johnson. Hits is a fairly wonky stats, but the official Avalanche total of 1,726 was the third highest in Avalanche history. And, for the first time since the Avalanche traded Chris Drury and Stephane Yelle away, the Avs were over 50% at draws for the year. It took 8 years to replace those guys in the circle, but they've finally done it! (Stastny, Duchene, O'Reilly and McClement all finished over 50% for the year). Oh, and attendance was up this year, stopping a trend of 4-straight seasons of declining numbers. Actually, if you really want to take liberty with interpreting the numbers, you could say the Avs' attendance increased for the first time since the 99-00 season. But not even I am that reckless and irresponsible.
There are some other intriguing statistical oddities from the season that I'll be looking at over the next week or so. For now, here's a big table with Avalanche season totals in some key (or not so key) metrics, thanks to nhl.com, hockey-reference.com and the few Avalanche media guides I have around or could find online.

So you’re saying they won’t make the playoffs next year?
Datsyuk may have done it first, but he learned it from Peter Forsberg.

Their toughness may have increased, but they still don’t seem to initiate contact with people until they are already losing. They also still can’t play a complete game (something that has lacked since the lockout). Their coaching is suspect, their defense was god awful. After Christmas they basically lost their offense as well. This was the most brutal 2nd half of a season I have ever sat through.
Yes, injuries were a big part of things, but again, even horrible teams tend to win more than 5 times in the 2nd half of a season.
Everyone can be sunshine and daisies if they want (and I will probably be there starting with the opening drop next season)…but this team is ways off IMO, especially with the current ownership, and their “red headed stepchild” treatment of this team.
I hope I’m proven wrong
Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
Why must you make me sad with your completely accurate dump on the avs. Sigh.

Except perhaps when they only have 2 starting defenders at any given time, are missing 4 of their top 6 forwards, and don’t have a goaltender that can bail them out with any confidence. I still say injuries were a much bigger factor than people want to admit.

i agree to a certain extent, but hoping significant injuries do not again occur is a good way to a) be disappointed, and b) make more excuses next season.
Yes, they are a factor. But not one that should have led them to lose damn near every game since christmas. Something else is going on; I think they just aren’t that good yet. Maybe some of them will be, but I think we’ve seen that some of the guys that were counted on (paging Brandon Yip) just can’t replicate their success.

I think that injuries exposed what is wrong with our system. We looked really good until they caught up with us. Assuming that they wont happen again (especially if we dont take steps to prevent them) is just plain stupid. Hopefully we wont be back in the 470 range again, but there is always the chance that we might be. Next season, we need to be prepared to for the worst-case scenario (meaning what happened this year). We’ve got a lot of good pieces, but a bit more depth – especially in the top 6 and veteran leadership – and a goaltender that is able to steal games on a semi-regular basis are vital to our success next year.
Just a Colorado girl in Montana who <3s the Avs.
We need more depth
There’s no argument with that.
But there is not a single team that can properly plan to play 17 different guys on defense.

aw come on
Bernie was actually pretty damn fun this year. At the end of the day it’s a mascot and for the kids but at least this year the Avs TRIED to utilize him because last year he was just…there. His ceiling seems to be that of Top 15 at his position in the league but he definitely isn’t a generational talent. Neither was Howler, for the record, though Howler was way cooler looking and with a more bad ass name. Bernie also runs on ice way, WAY better than the other Denver mascots who made an appearance at their mascot day. For the record, Miles should reallllly stick to grass because…wow.

as c6hor8 mentioned… this is not the worst season ever despite the lowest point total for a season. The 08-09 was just terrible and had some terrible players on it. This year’s team had major injury issues and had to deal with some less than great players but we had the chance to see some up and coming talent and have hope that next year will be better.
Languishing for Landeskog
I have to agree here. ‘08-’09 was a terrible season for a team on the decline. ‘10-’11 was a terrible season for a team on the rise. Somehow that made it more palatable.

I think Bryz is capable of stealing a game.
I think SJ could sweep the Kings if it weren’t for the fact they have a goalie that can steal a game as well.
I'll keep this brief.
Bryz is capable of stealing more than a single game, I put the Yotes advancing in 6 games personally. Plus they ditched Wolski, better odds.
October. When?
I think a lot depends on Howard and Zetterberg. If Zetterberg is healthy that’s a big boost, he may not be. Howard’s play under pressure has been suspect and that will be important.

Good. Then I’m at least in the right place.
But I really do hate Osgood. My emotions towards goalies are different from other players. If they play for us and are really good (meaning so far, just Roy) they’re the greatest thing since sliced bread. If they play for a team I dont like, they automatically are my most hated player (except for mayber Bertuzzi. What a piece of shit.) because they’re the ones that take away our goals. And I don’t like people that take away our goals.
Osgood is the main goalie for my most hated team. He punched Roy. That is a black mark in my record, so yeah, I hate him lots.
Just a Colorado girl in Montana who <3s the Avs.
I just don’t like Osgood because he’s overhyped. He’s an average goaltender that has had a good D in front of him. I also don’t like Marty B. He might of broken Roy’s record, but Roy did it in fewer games. I won’t deny that he’s a great goalie, but I still think Roy is the better net minder.

So long you might as well just post up the roster and then scratch Yzerman off the list.

I consider Bertuzzi to be a douchey piece of shit, not an actual NHL player. Therefore, there are plenty of Red Wings on the list ahead of him.

So why did the 6-foot-1/2, 164-pound Nugent-Hopkins earn top honors?
“A couple of people high up in the Oilers’ organization — and I’m not naming names — said Hopkins has the best vision on the ice since No. 99 (Wayne Gretzky),” Central Scouting’s Peter Sullivan
You’re kidding me right? Why did this guy get first? Well, let’s ask someone from Central Scouting:
“Well, we were going to go with Ovechkin again this year, but some guy in Edmonton said he liked some other guy. I couldn’t remember the name when I got back to the office, but the other guys there read off a list and I think it sounded something like Ted Nugent, so I picked the name closest to that one. We’re all in. We stand behind that one … whoever he is.”

Attendance Numbers
Are really deceiving for this season. I don’t have any facts or data behind this statement, but it just seemed that there were many more deals out there on tickets to be had, including many free tickets given away to the last two games. I wonder if there is data out there for paid attendance? Or even full-price paid attendance? My guess is that is was really abysmal this season.
And frankly, it makes keeping my season tickets even harder. Why pay full price for every game, up front nonetheless, when I know I can buy tickets to any game that I want to, usually at a huge discount? I’m toying with the idea of either cancelling my season tickets or taking advantage of an offer they have on hugely discounted tickets to every game up front.

So, it was a disapointing season, but the team has a better future than some of their contempories that accompany them into the draft lottery. Heck if they shell out for a better goal that rhymes with mesgoalieov (come on like anything rhymes with that) then I would put this team as challenging for that 8 spot. The future is still bright for this team, I can’t wait to see who they pick with the 1st overall pick.
