2011-2012 Avs

Here is my attempt at playing Greg Sherman this off-season.  I've tried to be as realistic as possible.  I am also not factoring in any trades.

1. Use the two First Round draft picks on Landeskog and Duncan Siemens (I'm assuming he will be avaliable at 11).

2. Resign the following players with these contracts (anyone else not mentioned is not re-signed. This does not include the guys on the AHL roster, just guys who say a bunch of time this year with the Avs.  Sorry if I missed anyone)

Hedjuk - 1yr/3mil

Flash - 2yr/3.5mil

Jones - 3yr/2.25mil

Gally - 1yr/1.25mil

Wilson - 2yr/1.75mil

O'Byrne - 2yr/2mil

Porter - 1yr/750k (2-way)

Stoa - 1yr/700k (2-way)

Bordeleau - 1yr/600k (2-way)

Elliot - 1yr/1mil

3. Sign Josh Harding as the #1 goalie at 2yr/3.8mil.

4. Forwards will be a combination of: Staz, Dutchy, Radar, JMclem, Hedjuk, Flash, Jones, Gally, Winnik, CMac, Yip, Olver, Landeskog, Bordeleau, Mueller (assuming he doesn't return until Jan 2012).

5. Defense will be:a combination of: Liles, Quincey, EJ, Wilson, O'Byrne, Gaunce, Elliot, Holos.

6. Goalies will be: Harding and Elliot

I think this would be a competitive team with a bright future moving forward.  Not sure how cap compliant I am with this roster.

If you think these changes will solve our problems you`re totally wrong. We could add Harding but only as our backup. We need size and defense. We have lot of cap space and try to use this. We don`t need Yip, Porter, Wilson, Stoa and Elliott. They don`t have enough skills to play major role in our roster. Since we have a lot of players who could play in the middle we should use one of them as a trade bait. Maybe Stazz for Rick Nash or another blockbuster to bolster our wing and add needed size. Maybe we should try to sign Brewer. And trade our 11th pick for Bernier to be our #1 goalie. Signing Flash is very risky.
Landeskog-Duchene-Hejduk
Nash-O`Reilly-Jones
Galiardi-McClement-Winnik
McCleod-Dupuis-free agent, prospect or minor league player
Johnson-Brewer
Liles-O`Byrne
Elliott-Quincey
Bernier
Harding
And we have also Hishon and Mueller

Harding pre-injury was competing for a starter job. Our backup is going to be one of Budaj or bad Elliott. Get used to that. If Harding returns to his true form post injury, he would be the #1 goaltender on the Avs roster if they were to pursue him. No way in hell do the Avs trade for Rick Nash. I won’t rule out the possibility of another blockbuster, but I doubt Stastny is the guy to go. While O’Reilly has shown that he has the potential to be a top 6 center, he needs to spend more time there to prove himself (in my general opinion). As awesome as having Bernier would be, he’s not going to wear an Avs jersey any time soon (do any of you pay attention to Beachie?) L.A. has no reason at all to trade him in the Western Conference. He’s young, cheap, and talented. Still unproven (yet to play a full season as a starter). It’d take a massive overpayment to pry him away from their clutches. The Avs have signed Pickard already..the kid still has another season eligible in the CHL juniors. Sherms is putting a ton of stock in him. So I highly doubt the Avs trade for another super young goalie. Someone in their late 20’s that wants a shot at being a starter. That’s who you should expect to see in net. Brewer was JUST traded by the Blues, and I doubt his new team lets him go so soon. They traded for him for a reason. While I expect to see a bit of a roster tweak this off season come July, yours is pretty far fetched. More NHL 11, less real NHL. I agree, this team does not need Porter, Yip, Stoa, or bad Elliott. Expect at least bad Elliott to be back in an Avs jersey though. Still, your idea of what the Avs roster just seems way too improbable, so don’t get your hopes up on that happening any time soon.

I would still rather have Boods as next years backup over Elliot. Elliot had one good season last year, but I think Budaj might be a better backup from what i’ve seen from both of them this year

I think with the help of Budaj as a full time goalie coach, bad Elliott might not suck as much (at least I hope).

Honestly I think this is a great idea. Boods, although not the most naturally talented, has shown he knows his position and how to play it correctly, even if he himself can’t do it to his full potential. Honestly the Avs fans love him so no one will object to this move either. Elliot has great potential I think he just needs some help from a goalie coach. I think we do need a real #1 though.

Brewer was less than spectacular to finish off the season for Tampa so there is a chance. Then again Yzerman is running that ship.

You are right on Nash, avs fans need to realize that he will not be traded. There is a better chance Malkin gets traded before Nash would be. He is too important to the franchise right now on the ice and off.

Languishing for Landeskog

by zandar on Apr 16, 2011 9:47 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, Columbus has forever been looking for a centre to play with Nash. Seems a bit counter-productive to trade Nash for a guy to play with Nash.

If CBJ doesnt start making the playoffs though…. I could see Nash leaving in the twilight years of his career

Well Columbus plays in the West so making the playoffs is much much tougher. The team is good but needs more offense at center and from the backend. They have some nice young options but they are not ready yet

Stats for Nash? the 11th for Bernier? I wouldn’t bank on anything like this, dude. May as well keep Wilson for a 7th D, hes perfectly good for that role. Flash is risky, but he might be cheap, so his risk is pretty low.

Thanks, Joe... Thanks, Peter.... Thanks, Adam....

In regards to the OP, I think you’re pretty spot on. This team isn’t trying to contend now. They’re still feeding us the “rebuilding” line, so a few small changes/tweaks will be made. I think what you’ve got is pretty realistic with the Avs plans and what they have shown us so far.

I’m expecting this offseason to be very similar to 09. A good draft, sign a free agent goalie, resign some key players (Flash), but other than that nothing major.

I expect some tweaks to the D. Not sure who is going to return or not. I think we could see a few players move. I wouldn’t be surprised if Stoa was sent to another team. He may not be, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Same for Wilson and Hunwick. I’d rather not Wilson leave, but with the Avs we never know.

October. When?

by Randy Time on Apr 16, 2011 2:21 PM MDT up reply actions

I don’t think Stoa has much of a future here, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he moved. I don’t know how many teams would actually want Stoa though. Maybe part of a package to get a late 1st rounder, or a good defenceman.

I know the general consensus around these parts is that after 40 NHL games, including a whole bunch on a bad team, we have decided that this just turned 24 year old 2nd round draft pick, who scored a goal in his first playoff game as a Monster, is a total and complete bust. At the same time everyone believes we can pawn Stoa off to another team as part of a deal for a pick or player, by convincing another team’s GM that he is a solid 3rd line player with 2nd line upside.

Which is it?

or did everyone forget the early goings for Jones and Stewart?

Languishing for Landeskog

by zandar on Apr 16, 2011 9:49 PM MDT up reply actions

I can’t understand the mentality that conclude a player has to go from his college career to his spot as a projected top 6 forward in less than 2 seasons. Coming into this season we had high hopes for a bunch of second year guys who ended up falling back to Earth (Yip, Gali). Sure it’s easy to look at Shattenkirk to see a kid with a fast development curve, but most players aren’t like that.

Leave Stoa in the AHL for another year or two.

If you want to trade somebody pick from this list: Hunwick, Cumiskey, Yip, Porter, Wilson.

I wouldn’t trade Porter. No way. 14 goals in his first full NHL season. Not to mention second on the team for GWG

Yes Porter is a slow yet steady developer. We should see him take the next step this upcoming season.

Stoa won’t take the next step until he is used properly or his body catches up. Stoa’s game is from the circles in, not along the boards or rushing the puck up the ice. Perhaps he adjusts his game to what he is currently being asked to do (TJ went from a skilled set-up guy to what he is now).

Languishing for Landeskog

by zandar on Apr 18, 2011 9:03 AM MDT up reply actions

My take on Stoa is that his head has not caught up to the game at NHL speed, he is trying to figure out what is going on around him rather than playing by instinct. I think in the AHL he is able to read/react, but hasn’t made that next step.

Of course he needs to be in the right situation, I think his style can complement Stastny well, but the other winger needs to be a real shooter, Mueller would be nice in that role. But until his head catches up with the game he’ll play poorly. I still have hope he’ll take the next step, being in the playoffs will help him, and another year or two in Cleveland, which is not unreasonable after two pro seasons and him being just 24.

what do you mean by “good one”? Ryan Goddamn Stoa good, or Ryan Stoa: 3rd liner with a good offensive upside good?

He will not be a “power forward” who physically dominates like CGDS, more like Jones but with more grit and front of net presence, slightly less of the shooter Jones is. But Stoa has shown signs that he can play strong in the corners and create havoc in front of the net, when he has the mind to.

he’s about 300mph slower than Jones.

I would be sad if we traded Wilson :'(

I know why we would, but I really like the guy. He’s a solid 5-7th defenseman who stands up for his teammates.

I think Gaunce might be the one who takes Wilson’s job in the end. I still want Wilson to stay though, he’s shown that he’s a guy who can make a big hit and play physical. Now that Footer’s gone, I think we might need him

I think that we need a stay-at-home guy in the 7th blueliner spot rather than another PMD. With our typically undersized forwards, we need defensemen that will stand up for them, keep the opposition off their tails, and cover their asses in our zone so they can do their job – score a crapload of goals and make the other team’s defense and goalie look stupid.

by andidee15 on Apr 18, 2011 2:39 AM MDT up reply actions

Gaunce is a smarter player than Wilson, more skilled too, and was finding his grit at seasons end. Wilson would be fine as the 7th, and I agree that he’s a better choice than a PMMidget.

Regarding the undersized forwards, what if we add Malone, Landeskog and Bordeleau next season?

Jonas Holøs- Putting the Ø in defense since 2010!

by niwotsblessing on Apr 18, 2011 6:19 PM MDT up reply actions

Bonus. But we’ll still have plenty of small forwards – our franchise player is one – so a bit more size and getoffmylawnness on the blueline wouldn’t hurt anything. And we’ll still have plenty of offense back there too – its not like EJ, Liles, or Good Elliott/Barrie are going anywhere (I hope).

I like Wilson but his value may never be higher and with a past history of concussions it may be best to sell high.

Looks good, the only thing I’d change is that i think Jones only gets 2 years. Avs want to keep things real open in the first 2 years of the new CBA
