Just based off yesterday’s press conference and interview, Sakic has made it very clear he wants to become a mentor to the young players. We already know he has the knowledge, personality, and experience required to inspire/guide the team, and now he has the opportunity to do so as well. If he is really going to be as involved with the players as he’s making it sound, we will basically have a captaincy tandem on our hands instead of just one guy.
I know I’ve flipflopped more than once on my opinion as to who should wear the C next year, but I’m about to do it again. If Sakic can cover the off-ice mentorship duties of the captain, I think Matt Duchene might be the best choice. He’s clearly the new face of the franchise, and it certainly looks like he’s being groomed for the role. Right now, he’s young, but I think the second half of the season really forced him to grow up. He’s probably still not quite ready to lead a hockey team on his own, but if he has Super Joe to back him up, he can slowly grow into the position. The Avs lack of a true star at the forefront of the team has been criticized since it makes them hard to market. Duchene could fill that role while slowly becoming the long-term leader of this team… much like Sakic did all those years ago in Quebec.
Choosing a long-term captain is one of the major steps in the rebuild. Dutch might not get the C until after Hejduk retires, but I would be surprised if he didn’t wear it at some point. With Sakic there to mentor him and make up for his lack of experience, perhaps taking the leap sooner than later is the best choice for the long term success of the team.
What do you guys think? Is Mighty Matt with his partner Super Joe a good choice for the captaincy?
