The older kid has an Avs hat on…his Avs jersey is too small, and we don’t have the funds for a new one (but he’s pressuring me for a Duchene)

Congrats to Canary for the MHH Fantasy Hockey League win! The Zamboni League will finish up this week.
Thank you and thanks to all who played.
Datsyuk may have done it first, but he learned it from Peter Forsberg.
Thanks for everything Foppa!
We can do a full post later once the Zamboni League is done. That way we can laud you in all of your well deserved glory.

Russo (Wild Beat writer)
Russo explains exactly why everyone should be cheering for the Avs to play hard… and lose in regulation. Look at how meaningless late season victories screwed the Wild this season.
As an Avs fan and Wild hater, this article pleases me to no end. They had the chance to be truly awful again this season… and went on a meaningless late season run which did nothing but net them a worse draft pick. It’s like spectacular failure.

As bad as this late season collapse has been, for some reason this team doesn’t seem like the same complete and utter abortion that 2008-2009 was. Reason for hope? Or have I been smoking rainbow unicorn tail today?

No, I’m with you. Their record is worse this year, but they were a worse team back then. I literally thought the team was a 15 year project then. Now—given adequate sacrifices to the concussion gods—they only look a few years off.
15 years, really? I would think 5 years at the most. I suppose there are some teams that never seem to get off the ground though.
What. The islanders didn’t want a piece of that rebuilding?

I wasn’t here in the season that didn’t exist, so I really can’t compare the two. But I do have hope for next year. We were competitive for half of the this season before injuries decimated us to the point of no return, so there’s no reason why we wouldn’t be a contender next year if we can stay healthy (pray to the hockey gods for new boards at the Can, some summer yoga lessons for the players, and little good luck) and fix some glaring holes in our roster (goalie, power forward, top pairing defenseman). We’re young, we have talent, and most of the pieces are there. So next year will be better…. that is, assuming our ownership gives a damn and will help fix our problems.
Jumpin' on the Johnson bandwagon.
Good Goalie. THIS SUMMER. Make it Happen, Sherman!
I was here for that. This definitely feels different; better. I am not that sad at this terrible point, but I feel like its all part of a process and plan. Well, not the injuries, or the goaltending, or… well, I am definitely more hopefull than a coupe years back.
Thanks Joe... Thanks Peter....
This year is much easier to explain because we were hot early on, and now we don’t have the same players, like Mueller, Flash and Stewart. Not that I think Stewart would be helping us much, but he was playing great early on. I’m not worried at all about next year, when there will be something to play for again, and we should have some healthy players (to start anyways). Also, I don’t see how our bad luck with injuries could continue. The odds are that we’ll get a healthy season soon. In roulette, if it’s been hitting on red several times in a row, bet on black.
Without healthy (GOOD) D and a Goalie worth a damn...
I don’t see us getting any better. I do see us fixing that problem this off-season (please!) and then there’s Landeskog.

I think if we had the ability (and desire) to play really good offense and put pressure on the opposing team, our defense would seem much better, which would make our goalies look really good too. The last half of the year, it seems like we lost the desire and we definitely lost some fire-power and chemistry with injuries. I don’t know if the desire was somewhat on purpose (tank) or maybe our younger team just got tired. I do hope that we go after Bryz or Vokoun in the off-season though. It’s the only position I think we need to spend the big bucks on, at this point anyway.
Mueller. Never. Played. A. Game. This. Season.
Why must we keep acting like the team tanked in part because Mueller disappeared. The team was winning without him also.
His 82 man games lost are inflating the team figures and just serving as an excuse.

BTW, I don’t think the team tanked because Mueller was not playing. I’m not sure if they tanked at all. If they didn’t, you could easily blame it on injuries and youth. You have to remember how young this team is. Youth in the NHL is rarely consistent, and I’m happy with what we had earlier this year and I’m not upset about getting a good draft pick either. I understood last summer that we were still missing a couple youngsters to complete our rebuild, and now we may have them soon. It’s hard to rebuild without good draft picks. It had to be done sooner or later, I prefer the sooner.
If youth is rarely consistent, why was ours consistently bad?
/philosoraptor
I make music. I don't think it's despicable, do you?
They weren’t consistently bad over the course of the year, they did quite well in the beginning. Are you forgetting that we had the best 5 on 5 offense in the league at one point? Also, Duchene went through a slump and then picked it up again while the rest of the team didn’t. It won’t be long before Duchene is consistently good. Throw in a couple guys like RNH and Flash, and our offense will be right back where it was in the beginning of the year. Don’t be too shocked if they can’t keep it up for the entire year though.
Youth is why I was furious at the lack of offseason signings last summer.

Yeah but because we didn’t, we are now closer to finishing the rebuild. Our youth got a lot of ice time and they will benefit from that, no matter where we finish. It’s good that we finished at the end of the pack though, because now we are on track for the rebuild. Last year sucked because we blew a very good chance to get Taylor Hall on our team. The silver lining was our youth was able to play in the playoffs though. I would trade that for Hall any day.
What the Avs need to guard against at all costs is creating a culture of defeat like you see in Long Island and Florida. The whole organization in both cases doesn’t know what to do to win. Tampa was heading that way until Yzerman grabbed them by the collar and dragged them back toward the light.
"It's all about the $"
I think those teams have horrible management, and that’s the difference between our team and theirs. Losing is not bad, it’s how you handle the loss that everyone needs to learn. Also, management will learn who can handle a loss and who brings the locker room down. Those players will be weeded out. So, I agree with you, but I think our team has a good handle on it.
The reason I brought up Tampa is that they had incompetence in management that started with ownership. I don’t know that KSE is incompetent, but they are definitely negligent.
"It's all about the $"
I think those teams have horrible management, and that’s the difference between our team and theirs
I’m sorry, but I have to disagree. Management is an absent landlord at best, incompetent at worst. They hung this team out to dry and by extension, it’s fans.
Losing is not bad, it’s how you handle the loss that everyone needs to learn.
Do you think that the team have learned by now? Losing occasionally or in a close game is important, but this extended losing streak (10 games of losses followed by 1 or 2 wins, then another 10 games of losses etc) is only teaching them bad habits.
Sacco knows his paycheque is guaranteed for next season, and the team doesn’t even seem upset at losing anymore. It has become a habit and I honestly think the team is okay with losing.
Farewell Peter.
Rebuilding. Does. Not. Mean. Exclusively. Young. Players.
Young players will play like young players. Any young person in any career will benefit from the wisdom of a veteran. Think of a police rookie. Now imagine that rookie paired with another rookie. Then think of their backup in another squad car as two more rookies.
They go to a major incident. None of them perform as well as they should, because they are inexperienced and make mistakes. They eventually do learn the right way, but they do it only after a lot of errors and pain. It stunts their growth, because they have to spend a lot of time discovering the right way to do things.
Now imagine the same scenario, but with one experienced veteran cop. There is still 3 young cops who have youth, but one older cop who they can learn from. He takes charge and tasks the young officers, explaining the pitfalls or potential hazards, so they don’t have to find out the hard way.
Time and pain saved, maybe some lives saved.
One of the FAs available last year was Manny Malhotra. The Avs passed on him. Until his injury, he was second in faceoffs won and is a PK expert. How useful would he have been to help Radar? Show him some tips and techniques. Or Stastny, or McClement or Duchene for that matter.
Rebuilding means getting rid of everything that’s broken and making it whole again. It does not mean raiding the daycare centre and throwing them all into a situation, saying: “Get on with it”
Farewell Peter.
Can I be the crazy one that’s always in the lieutenant’s doghouse? I always have to be the short-timer that gets shot in the shoulder.
Leiutenant : “Andy Goddamnit! Turn in your badge and gun! you are a discgrace to this force!”
Andy: “When I see a bunch of weird guys in robes stabbing someone in a park I shoot first and ask questions later”
Leiutenant: “That was a shakespeare in the Park production of Julius Cesar!”
An inevitable consequence of complex chemistry.
I find it more difficult to watch these final games this year than I did last time. This is such a talented team and it breaks my heart to see them like this. That team? Arnason as the first line center. Sakic and the Snowblower. There was no hope so it didn’t matter. With hope, it hurts more.
I don’t think Dufresne was quite right…

We need to lose our next game. For real. I want that STL pick this year.
Thanks Joe... Thanks Peter....
Unfortunately, if all goes well, then we’d be better off getting it next year, for several reasons.
1. Next year’s draft will reportedly be much deeper with high-end talent than this year’s.
2. Next year’s St. Louis pick won’t be protected, meaning if they really suck eggs next season we could get another premium pick.
3. If we don’t suck eggs so bad next season, we won’t be sending them such a high 2nd rounder in return, like we will this year.

That is a pretty good point (#3). Also, I’m hoping that Zack Phillips will continue to be ranked near the end of the first round, so he may be available in the second. I just don’t get how he’s ranked so low. I understand he may need to work on his skating but they say that about a lot of players, and it’s something they can learn. However, you can’t really learn the natural offensive awareness that he has.
Sums up my thoughts.
It would be nice to get a defenseman this year, get him developing (defense takes longer to develop), then take forwards next year so all this talent is maturing around the same time.

Eh, the first one was a horrible let down for me. I’m also not big into first person shooters. The first was insanely good looking, but other than that it offered nothing for me. The games I’m really really wanting besides DNF are Diablo 3, Battlefield 3 (only shooter I really like is the BF series), Skyrim, The Witcher 2, and I’m contemplating Need For Speed: Shift 2 on PC as well.

A few pointers just in case George ever wants to remake TPM:
1. No-one is interested in corporate disputes or politics
2. Do not start the only action in the movie in the last 15 minutes
3. Give the best SW villain in the franchise more than 4 lines and 6 mins of screentime
4. It is not a costume drama – Do not just talk for 1 hour and 45 minutes!!!!
5. Do not try and include everybody from the first trilogy – make up new characters and loosely tie them in. Jango Fett, C-3PO and R2-D2 – completely pointless
6. Put Natalie Portman in a Jabba Slave Girl outfit

For those who care, the Kitchener Rangers just scored two third period goals to tie it up with Plymouth in Game 7. Landeskog scored the Rangers first goal. Also took a penalty after plowing into Plymouth’s goalie. Ryan Murphy is having an excellent period for the Rangers.
And this must’ve jinxed them because Plymouth just scored the weakest goal on Kitchener’s goalie (not Maxwell).
