Thanks for doing this! I started to but then got busy…and lazy. =)

Watched the Saint John – Mississauga game tonight, but I would hate to spoil it for anyone. Huberdeau is worth taping the game.
The Sea Dogs have quite a few draft eligible players this year: Beaulieau should be top 10, I don’t see him slipping past Columbus; Phillips should also be a first rounder; Jurco Isvery crafty and should be a top 50 pick.. Combine those kids with Galiev (WSH prospect) and Despres (PIT prospect) and the Sea Dogs are early favorites for the Mem Cup.

This was a google search find. My normal source didn’t have it. But I’m excited that I found it! And it’s good quality too! I’m so excited to get my first glimpse at Hish!

Fun game so far. Was that Hish on that massive hit that they showed in the pre-commercial highlights?

Owen Sound does seem to like the penalty box. I wonder if they have “flashers” in the CHL?

Owen Sound’s numbers are kinda hard to make out on this stream. I can’t tell the difference between 10, 12, 15, 18, and 19.

Blacker is 12. Every other time he touches the ice I’ll be yelling ‘damnit blacker’. Even in the states, I’m sure you’ll hear it. Of equal value will be my shout of ‘HISHON!’ when number 18 touches the puck.

This is my first chance watching Blacker (and Hishon). I’m pretty impressed by Blacker so far. But Hish is a badass. Pracey, you’re a genius.
Just a Colorado girl in Montana who <3s the Avs.
Blacker has improved his play a lot this season. ‘Damnit Blacker’ is a bit of a joke that arose last season when his play wasn’t as good, and from the discovery he was a Leafs prospect.

come on Owen Sound vs St.John Final!!!
Any team can draft a player. Great teams develop their players.
will be a good preview. anyone read or see anything on who the favorite is? I am assuming St.John but that’s just my guess.
Any team can draft a player. Great teams develop their players.
there is no real favourite. St Johns finished 1st in the CHL rankings, so they have a bit of an edge, but its not much of one.

Saint John is pretty stacked compared to some of the other teams in the tourney.

They have a bit of an edge in things, but, especially compared to previous years, there was a clear cut favourite.
by some white guy on May 21, 2011 9:40 PM MDT up reply actions
Before the tourney started, TSN ran a poll about it (and still is).
Saint John was 1st by far (currently 54.9%), followed by Kootenay (20.3%), Owen Sound (14.1%), and finally Missisauga (10.4%).
Those results were kind of a surprise…

Fair enough. My response is based on things like the Sportsnet Preview show, where they said there was no clear cut favourite this year.
Finishing with the highest standing in the CHL definitely gives the Sea Dogs an advantage, but the Majors record wasn’t that much worse (58-7-1-2 vs 53-13-0-2). The Sea Dogs (1), Majors (3) and Attack (8) all finished in the CHL top 10. Kootenay was the only team that didn’t finish top 2 of their league, and could be considered a bit of an underdog based on their regular season play, but if you look at their playoff performance, they went 16-3, including a sweep of the top ranked Saskatoon Blades.
by some white guy on May 22, 2011 7:09 AM MDT up reply actions
Well, it's worth saying it was fans voting on TSN's poll, not "experts"...
Kootenay’s standing is probably because of how they tore through the playoffs, but I honestly have no idea why the Sea Dogs are so far ahead. I don’t think there is a clear-cut favourite, either.

I am still trying to get my head around who we take #2 overall. Maybe we trade down. Maybe there is a draft floor trade. Too many parameters, I feel woozy.

I am very suprised how physical Hishon is. I think he could handle the size of the NHL, if he keeps that mean streak
I think so too. I’m really excited to see more of him!
Do you think he’ll be on our team next year? Top 6 winger? Center #2 or 3 if Dutch or Stazz goes to wing? Radar’s winger on line 3? So many options! I think he could be pretty great anywhere. And if he doesn’t make our team, does he go to Erie or back to Owen Sound?

Overall Hishon Impressions
Watching the game, he really impressed me. He has pretty good speed, and he seems like he has great vision. I remember one cross-crease saucer pass right on the tape, but the OS player couldn’t finish. Beyond his good vision and playmaking ability, he had a few real good shots. He isn’t afraid to shoot, which is good considering alot of Avs are for some reason. He should have had probably two goals but their goalie was playing pretty well. My favorite thing about Hishon is that he is one feisty SOB. I remember the commentators saying during the hit, no one likes to play against Hishon, he gets in your head. And then, the hit. It was dirty, the Kootenay coach used the height different as an excuse, the same excuse we hear every time. Overall, although Hishon didn’t get on the score board, he played real well. I can see why he has been voted best stick handler in the OHL for the past two years because his hands seem very soft. As it was said before, Pracey is a genius, I think this kid will be special.
I agree and I just said something very similar over in the “Hishon’s hurt” fanshot. Pracey is a f***ing genius, which means that I don’t care who we draft this year. He knows what he’s doing. I actually thing Joey may have been a steal at #17. Stick him with one of our Centers (I think he’ll probably move to wing), and DAMN! Speed, puck-handling, great passes, hits, feistiness, scoring chances by the net and out on the ice, great vision, decent defense…. he could play with any of our top 3 centers and make a difference. Even though he’s 5’10, he might be able to play 3rd line if he fills out some (I have my doubts because of size, but he certainly has the grit for it, like Olver). I loved watching him last night…. right up until I saw him bleeding on the ice. I wanted to go freakin’ beat that McNabb kid with a shoe after I saw that! Gah!
Please be ok Joey. :(
Just a Colorado girl in Montana who <3s the Avs.
Yea, I think he is concussed. After he got hit, he tried to get up, and skated real wobbly and then sorta did a split and fell, not a very good sign at all. Hopefully the bleeding was just a broken nose or something rather than a major injury, get better #18!
by ProfessorOak on May 22, 2011 11:50 AM MDT up reply actions
He needs to stop taking bad penalties, though. Although he did totally set up the OS short-handed goal (by being the guy in the penalty box). I love the feisty, but he’s gonna get his ass handed to him a few times in the NHL. If he can channel all that energy into wanting to win the game, though, he will be a lot like Sakic.
The bad penalties aren’t too common for him, I like the roughing penalties. I mean it takes him out, but he’s standing up for his team mates, someone’s gotta do it. Was his one penalty high sticking last night? (the bad one atleast) I’m excited to see him play in the future. Yeah he probably will get his ass handed to him a few times, but it’ll just make him tougher.
by ProfessorOak on May 22, 2011 1:09 PM MDT up reply actions
I dont think he will care, he will get his.
by avalanchejef on May 22, 2011 4:37 PM MDT up reply actions
I really didn’t think it was a bad penalty, just kinda unlucky. I think he was just being aggressive and missed the stick and got the face. About the only time I really think a high sticking penalty is not a dumb penalty is on the faceoff, and if it doesn’t happen very often. I think his other two penalties he took he took someone else with him.

Even if they don’t, at this point, the goal differential makes it highly unlikely that the Ice pass the Attack

Could also depend on the health of the Attack. If Hishon is able to come back, Shaw got a bit beat up tonight….Mignardi didn’t look as good tonight with out Hishon.

Best case senario
If the Ice win tomorrow and OS wins on Wed, I think that will force a tie-breaker between the Majors and Ice on Thursday with the semi-final being played on Friday.
Any team can draft a player. Great teams develop their players.
Would there be a tie breaker, or would they use the goal differential? If they use the goal differential, it would take a bit of work for the goal differential to be made up.

I think it is just record
Reason why I think so is that no one has said that the Ice were eliminated at 0-2.

No idea. Barring a 3-way tie at second (which would be awesome), I can;t see an instance of a tie that couldn’t be solved by taking whoever won the game between the 2 teams.
by some white guy on May 23, 2011 9:25 PM MDT up reply actions
Although thinking about it, a game designed to break a 3-way tie would be legendary. They’d have to redesign the rink, and there would undoubtably be one or two rinkles to work out, but I’d pay to see that game.

I only saw the 3rd and OT
but I liked what I saw out of Huberdeau. If Kirkpatrick had finished the chances Huberdeau gave him, Hubs could have had 3 or 4 assists in the 3rd and OT alone.
And that was one hell of a shot for the winner.
I wish I could have seen the OT! He was meh in the 1st and 2nd. Even his coach thought so.
Just a Colorado girl in Montana who <3s the Avs.
If you are able to catch it tomorrow (or record it and watch it later), the OT was some really good hockey. Definitely worth watching. Even if it had a sad ending.

It appears that since the Ice won tonight, that the tie-breaker game will be played?
Game six of the MasterCard Memorial Cup is a rematch of the OHL Championship Series between the Owen Sound Attack and the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors at 7pm. The game will be broadcast live on Rogers Sportsnet.
The winner of Wednesday night’s game will advance straight to Friday night’s Semi-Final while the loser will face the Ice in the Tie-Break Game on Thursday.

Yeah, there is something seriously fucked up with the Memorial Cups tie-breaker methods. How is it that the Saint John’s wins over Owen Sound and Mississauga gaurenteed them a place in the finals, but Owen Sound and Mississauga’s wins over Kootany didn’t gaurentee them a spot in the semi-finals?
