Ralfalski Retires
So they could possibly lose Lidstrom and Rafalski in the same off-season? Sucks to be in Detroit, we it does anyway, but even more so now. Does anyone know if he was over 35 when the contract was signed? It will still count against the cap if he is, it won't if he wasn't and I'm not into math like Mike is, so....

I think he woke up one morning and said, “Wtf, I chose to live a good chunk of my year in Detroit?” And that prompted him to leave $6M on the table. That’s a lot of pizza pizza.
Speaking of, I haven’t had Little Ceasar’s for years due to my hatred of the winged wheel. The thought of one of my dimes going to those bastards makes me ill.
We see a wonderful sun-soaked city nestled at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Enos sees nickels and dimes.
I’ve seen like 2 in denver, I think many people feel the same way.
Adam Larsson. When? Ok, if not him how about that Couturier kid?

This surprises me a lot. Also it pleases me.

actually, it would be worse for detroit to keep paying him that 6m+ for not being that great, imo.

I don’t know, he’s been pretty good for them, I thought. Not sure who they can get to replace him.

I think this helps Detroit bigtime. Now they have the opportunity to go after Bogosian or Pitkanen with the clearing of 6m.
Any team can draft a player. Great teams develop their players.
i think pitkanen will be a red wing almost for sure now.

has he gotten better than he was 2 years ago? Otherwise a definite downgrade.

Is he old enough? They might try for another Calder exemption for him, like they did for Howard.

I’d take Rafalski over Liles any day of the week.

up til this year you’d be right, this year, maybe.

Rafalski is way more consistent. With Liles you get a pocket of really good, followed by “how the hell is this guy a defensemen?” then back to, “OK, he’s pretty good.”
Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
But.....
Rafalski had a Lidstrom to lean on and not do the heavy lifting of being the #1 guy. He’d have that in Denver, and couldn’t handle it, imho.
Stevens leaned on Rafalski a lot in NJ, especially in his later years

Didn't they have some schmuck
named Scott Niedermayer?
I’ve heard rumors that’s he a good defenseman.
Up until last year, I’d agree. But his play last year was very consistent.
Oh, and Detroit? You can stop believin' now.

i’d take rafalski from 1-2+ years ago over liles, but these days?

He still had 48 points this season (better than all but 1 Liles season 05-06), despite getting less PP ice time than Liles by about a minute per game. Rafalski also had almost a 1:30 more of SHTOI/game, even though Liles spent a good chunk of the season as one of the Avs best 2 defensemen.
All that iss before mentioning that almost all of Rafalski’s advanced metrics (GF/GA, Corsi, etc…) are better than Liles’.
And even on an eyeball test, I think Rafalski is better, even this season. But I always thought Rafalski has been underrated his entire career. He reminds me a lot of Sergei Zubov, who was never truly appreciated for how good he really was. Rafalski has been overshadowed by Stevens and Lidstrom his entire career.
(although I’ll never fully forgive Rafalski for the egg he laid in the US-CAN Gold Medal game game last season)

you wonder how much of his stats come from being on such a good team. As usual, we’re left with differing opinions from eyeball tests.
Red wing fans (paging DDC) note he’s been extremely turnover prone this past year, and don’t exactly seem broken up at the prospect of losing his play. He averaged 4 min less of ice time this past year — usually a good indicator of the coach’s perception of his play, if not his overall effectiveness. I did do more watching of him in the playoffs, and I guess he was more injured there, so I might have a skewed perception.
don’t get me wrong, he’s a great player. I just didn’t think he was very good this past year, certainly much worse than he has been in the past, and I bet detroit is pretty happy to not be paying him 6m+ for declining play and knee issues.

Yeah, he’s certainly not worth the $6M he was paid last season, but he was probably worth more than $6M cap hit the first 4 years of his deal. That’s the cost of signing someone to a long term friendly deal up front. You underpay them at first and then overpay them when they decline.

Well, they should be able to sign Weber to an offer sheet, I’m guessing if they give him that 6 mil over 6 or 8 years Nashville won’t match. But since Detroit is on it’s way down, by that 4th or 5th #1 those could be some good picks.

I think Nashville will match 6mil over 6 to 8 years, or just take the 4 1st round picks the Wings would have to give up.

Yeah
In the middle of writing this I forgot that it would give Nashville 4 first round picks, and didn’t take the time to really come up with a good prediction.
Actually I’m just practicing for my job on ESPN…

I played drop in hockey with a guy wearing an old Rafalski Devils jersey and he claimed he was a highschool buddy. Told me he does dinner with him when the Wings are in town…whatever. He said Rafalski had back surgery the very next day after the Wings were eliminated in 2010. Said he was also skating on one knee during the Olympics. Apparently he was in a world of pain the last couple of years. If that’s true then it’s understandable how he’s walking away from six million.
I'll keep this brief.
I thought Rafalski played wonderfully in the Olympics, except the Gold game
