Tomas Vokoun openly states he would like to play for Avs and that he believes they can go on a decent cup run.

Wow. That’s awesome to read. I wonder if he truly thinks the Avs are in a position to be that good in the next couple of years or if that was just “what he’s supposed to say”.

Your logical buzzkillery is ruining my already shitty jokes.

or if that was just "what he’s supposed to say

I really don’t think he would offer that information, if he didn’t mean it. He could say that about any team, but he didn’t.

He could say that about any team who has truckloads of cash to dump at his feet, but he didn’t.

Listen, last night this made me giddy. This morning however, I woke up my old realistic (pessimistic) self. I do believe we’ll be better (and not like “Calgary” better, but better like 7-8 spot better), but “Challange for a Stanley Cup now”? Don’t piss down my back and tell me it’s raining.

But it really is raining dude, it’s just a very unusual storm that funnels everything into one constant stream, for about 30 seconds.

Agree

It’s not like the interviewer asked him about the Avs, he brought them up on his own.

I bet it has something to do with what he saw Anderson do. Maybe he was thinking something like this: “Shoot, I can play better than him, so I can take Colorado further in the playoffs.”

by mcarson01 on Jun 16, 2011 10:38 PM MDT up reply actions

That...

And it’s not like this team is getting worse. I mean, our defense now includes a number 1 overall draft pick, a health Quincey, Snatch and Larsson (fingers crossed).

Yes.

"I would not be displeased if I got a good offer from Floria and accepted it," the paper quotes Vokoun as saying. "But if I happen to get an offer from a team that might have a chance to challenge for the Stanley Cup, now, that might be irresistible."

Like which team?

"Like Colorado," Vokoun said

Like F*ck yeah. If we’re able to sign him for three years hopefully one of those years he can be a nice mentor for Calvin Pickard whenever the Avs see fit to bring him up (as backup to Vokoun)

As bomb diggity as this is

We still have to offer him a fair contract. That said, if we do sign him, I’m buying his fucking jersey the day they are made oh my god.

Still, I’m going with doc and saying he ends up in Tampa Bay.

It makes you stop and pause, for sure

but realistically it takes two to tango and I don’t have any idea if Vokoun’s price and our price will be similar. I texted Cheryl tonight and said to offer him 3 years, $15 million at midnight on July 1st and if he accepts it, great. If he doesn’t, we move on to whatever plan b we have.

Sounds fair, I think we’ll need a little more than $15M (Maybe $17.5M) but that is still a pretty reasonable contract.

Of course, the Avs have been loathe to give out anything longer than 2 years recently….

I wasn’t in the Vokoun boat, but this article made me smile. 35 is okay for a little bit. Hell, Tim Thomas won the cup at 37.

Voukoun is very positional though. Thomas is in another world with his style…and still even Voukoun behind this defense, with this coaching staff…ugh

Vokoun signs with the Avs and he can be just like thomas and win a cup at 37

by avalanchejef on Jun 17, 2011 8:55 AM MDT up reply actions

I’m concerned about Vokoun’s state of mind if he thinks the avs are anywhere near challenging for the Stanley Cup. We can’t even challenge for a playoff spot. Come clean Vokoun, just say you want the big juicy contract from the cap floor avs. No need to sugarcoat things, you had us at “if I happen to get an offer.”

I think the Avalanche could make the playoffs next year. We just have to regain a little swagger and get the special teams going. We could definitely be contenders in three years with good development and smart management.

Voukon himself would go a long way towards getting us to the playoffs.

Draft Larsson and McNeil + Pray for Divine Intervention in goal = Kick ass.

goaltending and not be in the top 5 in man-games lost would go a long way toward getting the team back into the playoffs.

Datsyuk may have done it first, but he learned it from Peter Forsberg.

exactly…. until the Avs were decimated mid-season and the wheels fell off, this team was playing great….. same with the year before…. The Avs have shown, at least for decent parts of a season that they can contend…

by jd21 on Jun 16, 2011 11:15 PM MDT up reply actions

The biggest factor in the avs short-term success will be dictated by the health of the team. We still aren’t deep enough too take any core-player injuries. Not to mention, we are getting younger-if that was even possible-with the retirement of Foote and the addition of 2-3 rookies starting next season. Solid goaltending without question will help but staying off the IR will be critical.

and to do that we need some bigger bodies to keep teams a little more honest with our skill guys.

Like I said above, if Anderson was able to do it, Vokoun knows he can, because he’s the better goalie.

I’d be ok with Vokoun. Esp since he wants to play here. Like to see that we haven’t become the Edmonton south of preferred places to play.

I like Vokoun…but until this team gets more physical, and has some kind of DEFENSE that shows up night to night. Patrick Roy himself couldn’t help them

I can certainly see Roy as being the head coach soon. But if they are having issues in December, I expect that they’ll keep Sacco for the duration and tank for the Nail (Yakipov) in the coffin.

by mcarson01 on Jun 17, 2011 4:29 PM MDT up reply actions

And it is exactly because of this that I believe the Avs will not be willing to offer a goaltender top dollar. They are going to do what they did that last several years – barely make the cap floor. So, I am assuming Vokoun is going to be way out of their price range. Harding or someone like that might be more in play. I just hope it isn’t Marty Turco. Gawd.

I don’t know, I think goalie is the only position they would shell out the big bucks for. It’s too hard to bring them up through the system, so the only other options are trade or UFA.
