The Avalanche have shocked the hockey world and passed on signing Tomas Vokoun in favor of trading for G Semyon Varlamov. The trade is for a first round pick in 2012 and a second round pick in either 2012 or 2013. The second round pick is Washington's choice.

Varlamov, 23, put up a very impressive line of 2.24 GAA with a .924 SV% but has struggled with injuries (...yaaayyy...) and some inconsistency. Enormous risk, to say the least.

Varlamov reportedly has signed a two-year, $5.5 million contract.
