Just another Hossa, Kariya, Selanne situation. I pegged him to Washington a while back and he followed suit. He’ll make a big push to win the cup, get frustrated when Washington’s offense shuts off and then bolt for the $$$. He was never going to sign with the Avs hence the quick turn around the Avs did to get a goalie.

I figured that he probably wouldn’t have come to the Avs for this amount anyway. I was initially shocked though to see he took such a large pay cut. If the Avs don’t take Varlamov, this never happens, IMO. I almost get the feeling that he might have expected a huge amount from the Avs, and when they ditched the offer and took Varlomov, that’s when he was put in a bit of a corner because no one else would be looking for him at a high amount, and now he’s in Washington for less so that “he can win” a.k.a. he couldn’t find another high-paying suitor, and this one, though low paying, is at least a contender.
"Yeah, that's the wurst."
maybe
but didn’t you find it strange when other teams like Phoenix, etc walked away quickly and signed other goalies? Just look at Florida, they were tossing money left and right so it wasn’t about the money.

sticks when they've invented the lighter?
Musical (Money) Chairs
All speculation, but:
I think that Vokoun was expecting a massive pay deal, on a par with Bryzgalov. He was probably rubbing his hands with glee and thought all his Christmases had come at once.
Once Minnesota signed Harding, The Avs signed Varlamov, Florida passed, he was thinking “Shit” and then said to Washington, “Help me.”
Washington said, “We’d like to, bud, but we’re nearly at the cap here. All we have is a mill and half for next year.”
“Done!”

I agree with this. The caps were the only guys out there after a while. I don’t think they planned on getting Vokoun when they traded Var. but they were able to take advantage. I’m kind of surprised detroit didn’t go after him.
Available for a 3rd round pick.

Sorry. I agree with you, I was just trying to make a spaceballs joke.

Possibly
But at the same time, I find it curious that he would take such a massive pay cut to go to a team that was already “set in goal”. Or at least, everyone here keeps talking about how Washington didn’t need Varly because not only was he going to KHL, but they already had two other goalies ready to go, and then all of a sudden, here comes Vokoun for ridiculously low money. I don’t know, to me it almost looks like the Vokoun camp reached out to Washington (and no, I don’t have any evidence to support this, just a feeling) after he had nowhere else to go. I just don’t see ANY team approaching Vokoun and offering 1.5 million and expecting him to bite. Especially considering, as Dater stated, that’s just a couple hundred thousand away from Budaj money.

Caps fan here. Anyone saying the Caps were set in goal with Holtby and Neuvy was just trying to make themselves feel better. A lot of fans wanted the Caps to sign a backup veteran goalie. Holtby is talented but very raw. He didn’t play well in the playoffs in Hershey. Most people wanted him to get another season in Hershey with call ups as needed. This is why any talking heads saying Varly was third on the depth chart were just delusional. Neuvy had some injuries of his own last season and a lot of illnesses, so it was scary to think the Caps could be depending on Holtby and Sabourin. Sabs was in Hershey last season and wasn’t that good there, no one wanted to see him starting for the Caps.
Thanks for the insight into the Caps goalie situation.
Well Languished.

Would it be fair to say that the Caps are looking to win it all right now, and they feel Neuvirth is maybe the answer a few years away? /curious

Signing Vokoun being the possible solution for the next few years anyways, while the future goalies mature?
