Terry Frei off the Denver Post hockey beat
For the record, I like Terry Frei's hockey coverage. But, love him or hate him he represents the continuing shrinking coverage of hockey by the Denver Post since the closure of the Rocky Mountain News.
Editorials can and will be filled with new media like Mile High Hockey but beat reporting and asking the questions is still in the hands of our local sports media.
So now, it's up to Adrian Dater and Mike Chambers to ask the tough questions. And of course Julie Browman and the hard hitting rhetorical questions from Alittude Entertainment.

I wonder how the Avalanche feel about this…
The Colorado Avalanche: much more hugerer and depthier than last year
They'll never tell!
Seriously though, if Chambers steps in heavily, I think it will be OK, because he’s pretty darn good.
That being said, it does reflect a diminution of the already miniscule commitment of the Post to hockey as a whole. The Vandals are at the gates.

Cheryl, get on that press pass.
A man who stole my whisky used the defense that no one could resist a bottle of Scotch. I had no choice but to testify on his behalf.

Bummer
I also admit I’d much rather write a story and accompanying blog about, say, Chris Stewart and his unique family background than worry about who’s playing the point on the second power play unit and rush to be the first to report who’s going to be the healthy scratch among the defensemen tonight.
And that’s the exact opposite of what I like to read. Frei wrote features, and I understand that, but now that has to fall to Adrian or Chambers and we may have less of the day-to-day stuff that I actually do enjoy.
There are thousands of other places you can get specific coverage of other favorite teams and the league.
But none of them have the access that the Post has.
But I don’t mind being identified with hockey. Part of the fun has been being a dissenting voice, reacting to the traditionalist wing of the sport and even to the fans who believe that any disagreement with the "Canadiac" wing of thought means you believe the game should be played in skirts and that "you don’t understand the game!" I’ve frequently noted the double standards: When rotten NHL teams in "traditional" markets aren’t drawing, it’s because the fans are so discerning; when rotten NHL teams in "non-traditional" markets don’t draw, it’s because they’re "bad hockey towns." And, of course, when Avalanche attendance dropped dramatically, it was because this "isn’t really a hockey town." Interestingly, that often came from the same people who never once opined that having 3,000 people in the building for Nuggets games meant "this isn’t really a basketball town."
This is one thing I always appreciated about Frei.
But in general, I think any drop in hockey coverage is a bad thing.

I agree with that, but features are probably easier to get than d2d facts. The stuff we want to know about is also stuff the Avs opponents want to know about as well. And I can’t really blame mgmt for being tight with information that could possibly hurt the team.
That said, I won’t miss Frei on the beat at all. Road trips where he was the primary reporter had little in the way of info other than bland game day articles. At least Dater tweeted his inaudible videos and a blurb here and there about what was going on.
Is Chambers on twitter?
I always liked Frei, I felt that he stated his opinions very well. And I generally agreed with them. I hope Mike Chambers gives us material to read, but regardless, it’s this blog that gives me the vast majority of reading material having to do with anything hockey.
Small defencemen? What small defencemen?
