104.3 The Fan – Negative Avalanche Coverage in Denver

I know that almost everyone here is in agreement that the Avalanche get very little to no radio coverage in the Denver market. For a team that has won the Stanley Cup twice it is appalling that the Nuggets and the Rockies get more attention despite never winning a major sports championship. I know that a lot of people want to convince you in this market that Denver is not a hockey town; I believe that those same people wish that the Bronco’s were still the lone act in town too. I see evidence nearly everywhere that Denver is in fact a hockey town and a strong one at that. Look at all of the youth hockey organizations that have popped up across the Front Range. When I was in High School back in the late 90’s my school never had an ice hockey team; now there are burgeoning programs in almost every school in every district including my old school.

So what I would like to rant about is how when the Avalanche do get radio coverage it is almost always negative or done in a "We have to be fair to the hockey guys" kind of way. The big culprits are 104.3 The Fan… For example, on the show called "The Drive" with Big Al, D-Mack and Mark Schlereth (I love Stink and I wish he had his own show without the others) the show almost always covers hockey in a nonchalant way. When they were "covering" the NHL draft this year, they talked almost the entire time about the NBA draft which took place days before the NHL draft. They had almost NO information about the players being drafted by each team and had very little to say in regards to their achievements. So why would the station cover the NHL draft with three football exclusive analysts? Why couldn’t have they invited Mike Haynes or Peter McNabb on the show to help "educate" the fans on 104.3 who may not be as familiar with hockey? Hello? Sandy Clough could have at least stood in during the hour as he was an Av’s TV commentator once. I think a lot of that problem is Kroenke’s public outreach failure and not necessarily 104.3 who is primarily a football station. One time on the show Big Al or D-Mack said that if the Avs were a soccer team they would be relegated to the AHL which totally pissed me off (since the Broncos also shared the honor of the #2 draft pick). Then the "experts" proceeded to say how hockey should have a relegation rule like the Barclay’s Cup in England. I’m so tired of football experts pretending to be hockey experts… This also goes for Klis, Krieger and sometimes Woody Paige too. If you don’t know much about hockey other than Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky…keep your mouth shut and leave the writing to Dater and Frei.

I guess I just kind of wish that a hockey/Av’s exclusive station would pop up but I guess that is asking too much from this one horse town.

What do you all think? Should we create a Mile High Hockey Radio Station/Pod-Cast?
