Colorado Avalanche Blogger Roundtable Day 9: Breakout Player

Other than Gabriel Landeskog, who on the Avs do you think will have a breakout year this year?
I deliberately did not provide any criteria for this question as I wanted to let each writer to come up with their own. The end result is that we got a wide variety of answers. Er, with one exception.
David Driscoll-Carignan, Mile High Hockey: Last year I picked T.J. Galiardi and he wound up with 15 points. This year, I'm going to take...T.J. Galiardi. Clearly, I am an idiot.
Clearly, I'm a genius because Galiardi was the overwhelming favorite response.
Angélique Murray, Colorado Avalanche Prospects, Mile High Hockey & Chicks Who Give A Puck: I'm looking at TJ Galiardi as the player I expect to breakout this upcoming season. No, he's not going to put up 90 points, but I expect we'll see more of the player we saw against the San Jose Sharks in the 2010 Western Conference Quarterfinals. So, I'm predicting a 20 goal/30 assist season for Mr. Galiardi.
Mike @ MHH, Mile High Hockey: The hipster pick is T.J. Galiardi, right? That's a thing now, right?
Geoff Rosenthal, The Avs Factor: T.J. Galiardi. If all goes according to plan, he will finally be playing on the third line, a role that he is exceptionally suited for. He will play alongside Ryan O'Reilly (another breakout candidate) and hopefully channel the energy he had in the 2010 playoffs when he became a monster against the San Jose Sharks. Don't let me down, Gali.
Derek and Ryan were on the same wavelength, choosing Galardicus and Peter Mueller.
Derek Bell, Mile High Hockey: There are a couple of players that I'm looking for to have a big year. Peter Mueller and TJ Galiardi. Can Mueller shake the concussion symptoms which kept him out all of last season and recapture some of the brilliance he showed during the Avs short playoff run 2 seasons ago? Or will he fall by the way side due to injuries? Can Galiardicus solidify himself as a top 6 forward in the NHL and earn himself a long term contract after this season? I believe he can, and will, be in the top 3 in scoring this year for the Avs behind Paul Stastny and Matt Duchene.
Ryan Boulding, The Avalanche Guild: I think Peter Mueller will stay healthy this season and that he'll easily top his 54 points from his rookie year. A lot of this depends on who he plays with and if he can mentally overcome the fear of missing another entire season due to injury. TJ Galiardi has something to prove after being demoted to the AHL and having two broken bone injuries last season as well. Look for him to come out heavy as well.
Cheryl also mentioned Galiardi, along with Cameron Awesome and Radar O'Reilly.
Cheryl Bradley, Mile High Hockey & Avalanche Breakaway: I anticipate three players having true breakout years: TJ Galiardi, Cameron Gaunce and Ryan O'Reilly. I picked Gaunce because he has great vision and is so smart with the puck. Between watching him in games at the Pepsi Center and at practices, it's clear the young defenseman has the "it" factor. His development from training camp to his final NHL game last season was impressive and showed his ability to adapt and improve his game. He also paid his own way to make it to what's becoming a highly sought after and in-demand week-long off-season clinic in Canada: the BioSteel camp. In late August, he joined the likes of Steven Stamkos, Jeff Skinner and Steve Mason in the brutal week of on-ice scrimmages and drills, as well as off-ice workouts. This shows that he is serious about his career and dedicated to improving his skills.
O'Reilly and Galiardi will feed off each other to create a dual breakout. Paired on the third line together, they are going to hit that groove they once had back in 2009-2010. Their penalty kills were incredibly impressive, and they seemed to develop a mental link that allowed them to know exactly where the other one would be in order to create an effective forecheck. That chemistry will translate to their forward line in such a way that they create space for one another and anticipate the pass for better scoring opportunities. There won't be a clear "goal scorer" and "set up man" for them; each will feed the other when his linemate has the better shot and take one when he knows it's his to have. Moreover, both players are strong defensively, and when you add Chuck Kobasew to the right wing, this line will become a formidable one with added versatility.
Her buddy AJ went with ORLY as well.
AJ Haefele, Mile High Hockey: I struggled with this one quite a bit. I think this year we finally see what Ryan O'Reilly is going to give us on both ends of the ice. His play on defense is well-documented and respected around the league. He's an extremely intelligent player who does the little things better than most guys in the league, an especially impressive feat given his age. However, this year I think he shows up more on the scoreboard and makes a leap from sub-30 points to the 40-50 range. Anything less than 30 would be seen as a significant letdown in my eyes.
One name I expected to see more here was Stefan Elliott. I'm thinking the Avs crowded blueline is probably what held more people back from making this pick.
Adrian Dater, Denver Post: Stefan Elliott, for sure. I see this guy getting 40 points this year.
Call me crazy - and he may not get enough ice time to get that much, but I really think he's got the talent to get that many points. Might he also be a minus-40 out there? Maybe, but I think he definitely has the goods for a good rookie year.
Pavol from Austria, Eurolanche: Well, we have a lot of prospects, but the best one for next season is probably only Stefan Elliott.
David from Slovakia, Eurolanche: It would be a dream if Landeskog would play like a God and the Erik Johnson and Semyon Varlamov would join him - offense, defense and the goalie. I would pray for Varlamov, because his position was our "black hole" after Roy´s retirement. Did we find the right goalie finally? But back to the question - Stefan Elliott is my hottest candidate for not only breakout season but also Calder Trophy nominee.
But, there actually were a bunch of other defensemen not named Elliott mentioned
Jaye Horbay, Mile High Sticking: I'm hoping for Jonas Holos to break through in a big way. Yes, he was thrown straight into the fire last season, but with the exception of a few gaffes, (I got to witness the OT faceoff fuck up in Vancouver in person) I think he had a pretty solid season. Pair him with a competent defenseman in Hejda or O'Brien and I think he'll quietly put together a good season. It won't be flashy on the score sheet, but the small things that win games.
Sandie Gauthier, Mile High Hockey: I think, barring injuries, it's going to be Kyle Quincey's year. His season-ending injury last year was an abnormal one, and one that is unlikely to be a re-occurring problem as long as it has properly healed. Two years ago he was a good, solid, young defenseman. Last year he struggled early in the season, then he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury when he was starting to figure it out.
Austin Snow, Avs Chill Zone: Kyle Quincey. Gotta stay healthy, but I say he puts up 50 points - more than EJ.
Matt Muzia, SBN Denver: Erik Johnson. He has the size and talent, and he finally has an organization that firmly believes in his future. With Hejda staying home, Johnson will be given free range to play a more open style. Potential All-Star this season and our future captain.
Aaron Musick, HockeyBuzz: Two players breakout this year: Matt Duchene and Erik Johnson. Mueller is another one to watch for but just playing a full season would be a good start. Duchene and Johnson will breakout in a big way due to maturity and great offseason training programs. Johnson in particular with a stronger lower body, should be faster and more explosive.
Another guy with a couple of mentions was Joakim Lindstrom
Stephen Crociata, Mile High Sticking and SBNation New York: I believe Joakim Lindstrom has a lot of promise if he makes the Avalanche out of training camp. If he is on one of the top two lines I can see him puttingg up similar numbers to what he put up in the SEL (28 and 32). I also believe Chuck Kobasew has a great opportunity to revert to his old ways.
Brett Shumway, Mile High Hockey: I want to say Galiardi and Lindstrom will have break out seasons, but playing in the bottom 6 will limit them both. Lindstrom may be a sleeper power play specialist. I could see solid PP numbers from him, potentially more than at even strength.
Also getting nodes: Brandon Yip and Brad Malone
Mike Verminski, Put It On Ice: Yip only because he's my man crush.
Mike Chambers, Denver Post: Brad Malone might make the team as a Cody McLeod-type and hopefully Peter Mueller proves that he can play a full year again. David Jones and TJ Galiardi might have big years.
Finally, Andi went with D) All of the above
Andi D, Mile High Hockey: I think 2011-12 will be a breakout season for not only a number of our players, but for our entire team. Almost everyone is in the final year of their contract, and they have something to prove this year after such a dismal finish last season. I made a list of everyone that I thought could have a breakout season, and it had 11 names on it. However, I think the four that would have the most impact on the team are our core players. I think Duchene will finally break 80 points and begin to establish himself as one of the elite centers in the league. EJ will also have a big season - with Hejda as his partner, he'll be able to jump into the play more and prove that he's a strong 2-way defenseman that was rightfully taken 1st overall. I expect him to lead the blueline in scoring next year. And I'll bet that more is going to be asked of O'Reilly offensively and that he, in true O'Reilly form, will live up to those expectations. He could become one of the very best two way centers in the league, and I think next year is when he'll start to prove it. And Varly, if his health cooperates, could also establish himself as one of the best in the game. He certainly has the talent to be - with Giggy (and hopefully a full time goalie coach) there to guide him, I think he could have a really great year. If all 4 of them live up to their potential and a few other teammates join in, I think the Avs are a playoff team.
I loved the wide diversity of the answers here as well as the wide assortment of potential breakout players (or tear- inducing disappointments). We're going to have even more fun tomorrow, when we gave into our crystal balls and sort out the logjam on the blueline.

Oh boy, Dan’s TJ-dar must be going insane this morning.
I’m going to go with Varly, if he remains healthy (and can get through what I’m sure are some mental issues with the Lokomotiv tragedy)

I am partially confused by the TJ stuff. If he’s on the 3rd line with Radar he’ll be amazing, but he won’t be able to put up a ton of point. If he goes on the 1st line with Stastny and Jones then he might put up more points. I do like the flexibility with the line-uo though. There is actually talent to be moved around and not enough space for the players. That’s just a damn good thing.
I think Elliott will make the team and make us forget Shattenkirk, but Johnson is my pick. He’ll always have the “bust” stigma, but I think he dominates the Northwest Division.

I’m hoping and think there’s a fairly good chance that the Avs Defense as a whole will have a breakout year. Our guys can already score in bunches, that will be nothing new. If the team is playing on it’s toes and feels like it can win every night, the offense will be just fine.
But our defense – and I’m including forwards and goaltending here – was bloody atrocious last year. This year we have the potential for breakout years from EJ, Elliott, and Gaunce. We have the addition of another big body in Hejda. The return of Quincey. The absence of Cumiskey and, heavens help us, Hunwick. Goaltending is completely revamped. We have some great pieces in place for the defensive forwards. Hopefully they’ll mesh better with our new look D-pairings. The potential for improvement all across the defense is just Brobdingnagianly large.

But but but, Copper N’ Blue compared the defense to Columbus, Edmonton, and Minnesota and said it was Lilliputian. How dare you disagree with them? Are you some sort of Houyhnhnm?

Don’t trust those jaded Yahoos over at Copper N’Blue. Any good Houyhnhnm would realize there are just too many question marks and new pieces for anyone to truly judge how the Avs defense will play this year. The potential for greatness and utter failure are both there.

I’ve never been on the Galiardi bandwagon. I hope, obviously, that he has a great year, but I’m just not seeing it.
I’d like to go out on a limb and say Hejduk will have a return to form year. He didn’t have a bad year last year, but I expect an even better showing this year. I expect/hope for 30+ goals and 40 assists. Of course this is all dependant upon him staying healhy and the production of his linemates.
Finally, does anyone else ever see “falafel” when reading AJ Haefele’s last name? Maybe I’m slightly dyslexic.

I think Kobasew was an under rated signing. Sure he wasn’t all that flashy in Minnisota. But how the heck could he have been, they’re fucking minnisota, they’re boring. I think he’ll be close to the player he was in Boston and Calgary and double his goal production to 18 or so.

by An Unmitigated Disaster on Sep 13, 2011 8:31 AM MDT reply actions
I honestly quasi-forgot we even signed Kobasew. If our lines look like the following, which presumes all the guys are playing well enough to be there, then I think we have a good chance at a pretty solid team. The lack of depth and prolificacy at the top wings is still pretty glaring though.
Mueller – Stastny – Jones
Landeskog – Duchene – Hejduk
Galiardi – Radar – Kobasew
Winnik – McClement – whoever
EJ – Hejda
O’Byrne – Quincey
Elliott – Guance (or switch a rookie with a 2nd pairing vet)

The difference, however, is that the Avs can get a wing. Maybe they sign someone like JP Dumont if someone else gets hurt. If injuries spring up, they can address it from a position of more strength than last year.
A man who stole my whisky used the defense that no one could resist a bottle of Scotch. I had no choice but to testify on his behalf.

I mean, I guess he’s an upgrade, sort of, but he is really a quicker version of Galiardi. I don’t think he’s overrated by any means but he is a product of the Bruins system. If he goes anywhere else, he will be expected to score a lot and that won’t happen if it’s on his shoulders alone.
A man who stole my whisky used the defense that no one could resist a bottle of Scotch. I had no choice but to testify on his behalf.
I’m still not sold on Jones being a long-term solution in the top two. Hejduk is in his last couple years. Mueller is one more concussion away from retirement. That leaves Landeskog, who is an 18 year old rookie. What other prospects could make the top two inside of the next couple years? Hishon and?
Point being, just about any legitimate top two winger is an upgrade for the Avs. That being said, it’s likely more appropriate to look for a wing once the need is immediate, e.g. retirement or long-term injury.

Kobasew is a 3rd line player at best. Lindstrom is a complete unknown. Yip and Malone are bottom 6 players. Galiardi could be a top 6 forward if he progresses.
I think Mueller is safe and I think the Avs think that. Their confidence in him makes me happy.

Since it's a slow hockey news day
There is some moronic twitter topic about “knowing if your a MnWild fan”. Reading B Rey’s comments is like a sociological study of an alien race.
From what I can tell, he seems happy to lose Havlat, enjoy being the San Jose sharks of the East, don’t seem concerned that Burns is gone, and is excited about getting Heatley. Um…wow.
A man who stole my whisky used the defense that no one could resist a bottle of Scotch. I had no choice but to testify on his behalf.
This is how he’s such a good Wild fan. You’d have to believe a bunch of crazy shit to put up with that team.

There’s delusional and there’s thinking that Heatley is not only better than Havlat but is going to make your team better.

Wasn’t this the same guy who flipped his wig when Dater suggested that Minnesota wanted to move Havlat?
At least Havlat was just hurt a lot. Not even playing alongside Joe Thornton could keep Heatley’s numbers from dropping.

I can’t believe someone choose Yip or admitted to having a man crush on him. I am not even sure Yip makes the team at the end of camp. Actually I am kind of hoping he does not make the team at the end of camp.
Our Johnson is bigger and better than LA's Johnson so suck it.
I would much rather hope that Yip plays like old Yip and makes camp and scores 20 goals this year. But thats just me i guess?

If he can do that as 4th line RW I would be f’ing ecstatic. Barring injury, that’s as high as Yipper is likely to go. If Yip scores 20 b/c he’s playing on a top line b/c half our team is injured again, well then I’ll likely be too drunk to make an intelligible complaint.

I just think he’ll play better, no matter what. I don’t think his play was nearly as bad as a lot of people made it, but it was still underwhelming in his limited action last season. But his previous season(s) he showed he can be better than that. so, to me, it’s more likely he plays better than stays the same. Some players just have off seasons (See: Stastny, Paul). I think Quincey was looking better when he went down from injury anyways.

Breakout player:
Ryan Wilson, I think Mac Truck has a big year. The revamped D and goalies will give him more room to run around and do what he does best. Hit and make strong outlet passes. I could honestly see him topping 30 points while really rounding out his defensive game.

If Wilson plays regularly, it’s b/c Gaunce and/or Elliott are not. Gaunce and Elliott both look to have higher ceilings than Mac, so I’d vote for either of them to play this year (assuming they deserve to) just for the long term gain.

Well Eliott and WIlson aren’t really comparable but does Gaunce have a higher ceiling?
A man who stole my whisky used the defense that no one could resist a bottle of Scotch. I had no choice but to testify on his behalf.
From what I’ve seen, Gaunce has been much more positionally sound than Wilson, better on the boards and in transition. Wilson is an exciting player to watch, but I don’t think he’ll contribute as much to the team as a solid, stay-at-home guy (see Hannan, Scott, marketed as).

A man who stole my whisky used the defense that no one could resist a bottle of Scotch. I had no choice but to testify on his behalf.
I agree with MC, Gaunce is way better positionally, though not as big a hitter. He’s also a much better passer. as he develops, I only see him improving too, while Wilson is getting close to being done developing.
I can see that side of things, but I definitely think Wilson is a competitor and the pressure from guys like Guance is going to force him to take a step forward. Now, it could just mean he’s worth more at the deadline and traded to make room for the guys with agreeably higher ceilings. But I still think his game takes a big step forward this year

I think Quincey is trade bait when Siemens, Elliot and Barrie are all ready. Him or Hejda. I could also see Gaunce shipped out in a move similar to the EJ trade, for that upgrade. I would bet a lot the Avs are working hard on Suter, Turris, and/or Parise any time between now and the deadline.
Turris has never gotten a fair shake in Phoenix, much like Mueller. These contract demands are thinly veiled I WANT A REAL CHANCE declarations. fine, we’ll give you one:
Stastny + Gaunce for Suter + Fisher
Fisher + Pickard for Turris
interesting take. I have mixed feelings on the Turris deal… But I’ll take Suter and FIsher in a heartbeat

I would agree, but I don’t think that Siemens and Barriot will all be ready before the end of Quincey’s contract at the end of next year. I’d love for it to be the case, but I don’t see a not quite 19yr old Siemens ready to step onto the 2nd pairing, or into the league for that matter.
Given that fact, I don’t see the logic in letting go of either Gaunce or Pickard. I guess if Barriot are so fanfuckingtastic that they make Gaunce superfluous, but I think that’s hubris, to be honest.
2011-2012 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl: Vyechnaya Pamyat!
2011-2012 Colorado Avalanche: The possibility exists that this may not suck.
Barriot are RDs, Gaunce and Siemens are LDs, so they’re 2 separate issues.
with this trade, i see:
Suter – EJ
Hejda – Barriot
Quincey – ROB
Barriot
and Siemens replaces Quincey and Hejda in the 2LD spot eventually, and Barriot #2 replaces ROB.
I just think Suter is a pipe dream at this point. If Stastny was traded, the Avs would go from having amazing center depth and mediocre D, to amazing D depth and mediocre center depth.

Wilson is likely as good as he’s going to get, or close.
I think Wilson will win the #6 spot out of camp, but someone (Guance, Holøs, Barrie or Elliott) will get some spot duty during the season (injuries or something) and they will overtake Wilson on the depth chart.
I like Wilson a lot, but the fact is that the Avs have some very good D coming up in the system and his days as an Avs regular top-6 are numbered.

""Pop Psychology Alert"">
I think struggling so much in the second half, and hitting a wall is going to be a little bit of a wake-up call for him. It’s unlikely he’s ever had to deal with anyone as talented as him much until now, and I think he’s focused on being a lot better this season. That’s not to say that I think he was slacking, or loafing or anything but there’s always a point when you get to the real world and you realize that it’s not the way it used to be anymore. It’s all part of growing up and maturing. I think he hit that last season. I hope he did. I think it will show this season and he becomes the #1 center, and Stastny takes a #2 role (which I think will make this team a lot better)

He is a legitimate #1 center (he’s certainly one of the 30 best in the league), but I think Dario (& others) has the right solution: build down the centers. If you have a 1-15 and a 15-30 center on your team, you have a step up on other teams in the league.

A number 1 on this team I mean. He is skilled enough to be one, but he performs better when he is in a slightly secondary role. Duchene has that power to take over a game and get that one goal when you need it, like Sakic. Stastny is just consistent.

Though I should have saved it for this thread instead of saying it in the “I hope” thread….
Jay McClemment will breakout (as much as one can “breakout” as a defensive centerman) and that breakout will allow Orly and Gali the chance to become the offensive minded forwards that we suppose they could be.

If he plays well, he also adds a dynamic to the team. It gives them 2 offensive line, one defensive line, and one blend of Radar, Gali, and Kobasew/Winnik. That line I think will prove a pivoting point.
In defensive games, it will give the Avs two defensive lines. In offensive games, it will give the Avs an extra offensive line. I really think that could turn out to be an amazing thing.
