Oh Captain, My Captain.
With the season slowly approaching, the Colorado Avalanche are one of only six teams that haven't yet announced their captain. The other five teams are the New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, the Buffalo Sabres and the Florida Panthers.
With the start of Rookie Training Camp and the upcoming full team Training Camp, the Avs' announcement could come on any given day. Whoever it is will have immense skates to fill. Adam Foote and Joe Sakic are well-loved and well-respected players and men. They were also with the organization for quite some time. While on a conference call earlier the Avs stressed that a Young Stud could be the next captain, and not to rule it out.
There are two questions that come to mind:
- Who do you think will be the Avalanche next captain and
- Who would you want to be the next Avalanche captain?!
Let's get the discussion going on this dreary Wednesday!

Hejduk
The Duke has earned it. While others talk with words, the Duke speaks with a Stanley Cup ring.
Until others can do that, he should wear the C.
Completely disagree. Just because Hejduk has had a great career, and is the elder statesmen so to speak, he doesn’t really deserve it. I think Duke likes his role as the quiet guy who lets his actions speak for him, but unlike Sakic, who was the same way…this is no longer a team filled with vets where that would work. I think a more outspoken leader is needed this time around.

I mentioned to Jibbles, Dario, and Cheryl last night on twitter that I think Hejduk would have the C if he wants it. I think out of respect they would give it to him, but to me he’s the kind of guy who would take an A and let someone else lead; he’s understated and is great in that role. I think Johnson gets the C, Stastny and Hejduk keep the A’s.
When Hejduk retires, I imagine O’Reilly gets an A and when Stastny eventually leaves, Duchene or Landeskog would get an A.

Still think it’s gonna be Stas. Guy’s been getting groomed for it since he joined the team. He’s on great terms with all the other players (I felt like I saw a lot of photos of other current and former Avs getting photographed with Stastny). Despite what some people around here think, I really do think that Paul is a leader on the ice.

I think the youth movement gets served this time around. Foote was the sentimental favorite last time around…but I think this is going to be a more long term pick. EJ, or Stats would be my picks. I see a lot of Duchene for C talk around the interwebz, but I just don’t see that…not sure why
Stabilize your rear deflectors, watch for enemy fighters.
He leads in energy and leads the offense, but I am not sure if we see him leading the team in a captain role. Again, I had been saying that Stastny is a leader for two years now and people disagreed. We never know exactly what goes on in the locker room.
Duchene is clearly the face of the franchise. Does that deserve the C? I am not so sure, but it does deserve and A at some point.

I think it should be Hejduk’s to take or turn down and I think he’s mature enough to assess whether he’d be good at the role. After that, I’m torn. It really depends on what you want from a captain.
Stastny is next in line seniority-wise. Does he want the responsibility? Will it help him develop as a player (and person) to have that weight? And, of course, is his personality in the locker-room one that will let him take the leadership.
Otherwise, E.J. certainly looks like he’s grooming himself but it seems too soon for him.
Optimistic thought of the day
On this team right now there is EJ, Stastny, O’Reilly, Duchene, and Landeskog. All of them are immensely talented and all have leadership ability. Yeah, that is JUST. FUCKING. AWESOME.

This made me think...
If we as fans believe we have such a large crop of guys who seem like great leaders, the question must be asked. Is this due entirely to their quality (proven, perceived, and otherwise), or could we be judging “good” to be “great” for the lack of true greatness? You could picture it like a 40 watt bulb in a dark room. Sure it looks pretty dang great. However, if you light that bulb in the presence of a bank of stadium lights, it pales in comparison. How do each of these leaders measure up to the leadership aspects of Sakic and Foote?
I do think we have a great leader somewhere in our crop of guys, but we do have to ask the question if for no other reason than to keep spectrum valid.
Slightly Tasteful Fudge Underpants
If Stastny does not get it (assuming Hejduk doesn’t want it (because I’m in the Hejduk will get it offered to him camp (out of respect of course))) I will raise my eyebrow in a suspicious manner.
If you raise both you’re surprised. I want to be suspicious (of course, I could raise one at a time (but then it just looks like I’m trying to be funny)).
Or you can do the cartoon eye thing, the back and forth suspicious look

The combination of the two would really sell it (if it happens I will (but you won’t see me, so I’ll have to describe it to you (which will probably make it lose some of it’s effectiveness))).

I'm beginning to really like the idea of Stats with the C, Duke and EJ with the A's.
I think someone like EJ will thrive with the added pressure and I think the boisterous leader thing we have him pegged for works better coming from an A. It’s not necessary all the time but when the team needs a swift kick in the pants he can give it. Duke can do the quite lead by example thing. Go out there play hard and do all the little things right that you need to be a champ. I really think Stats can be a bit of both. Everyone likes him, he works hard, plays the right style, and could get away with telling people what’s up when it’s needed.
I’m not sure we need to put that added pressure on Dutchy yet. Don’t want to take away the youthful exuberance. When I’ve seen him at his best it’s because he looks like he’s having the time of his life out there, smiling and laughing, and that brings out his creativity and confidence on the puck. Think he still might start gripping the stick a bit to tight trying to “lead” when things aren’t going perfect. Of course maybe the pressure of a letter would push him to the next level.
I agree about Crickets probably doing better without the C. There’s no perfectly easy choice like Footer this year. Any of EJ, Stastny or Hejduk would do just fine.
I need a drink, please.

My two cents: I would choose Duke for the next year or two and then probably pass the C on to someone like O’Reily. I would keep Staz with an A and add an A to Dutch or EJ.
I wouldn’t give EJ or Dutchy the C because they are seem to be too emotional. Fire and energy are great to have on a team and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. However, in my opinion, a captain needs to be more steady and solid, someone who won’t get too up when things are going well, and someone who won’t get too down when things are going wrong. Staz, I think gets too down on himself when things are going poorly. Dutch can let his excitement run away with him, and EJ I think will be too hot tempered. The person I see being most steady is Ryno.

I don’t know. Radar seems to take it pretty personally and gets really down on himself when the team loses.
He may take losses seriously, but he refocuses that back onto the ice. You should’ve seen him last season in practices after losses, especially ones where he didn’t play so well. Out early, stayed late, worked his ass off. Duchene’s play seems to be affected too easily, like he’s carrying a weight around. That’s a maturity thing and I expect things to be much different this year. But O’Reilly already has that maturity to be able to redirect the disappointment towards working harder.

I’m glad this post came up this morning, because I was just about to ask about the Avs’ captain situation. I was in Europe all summer, and thought I might have missed something, seeing as how there was no discussion. Ha!
I don’t think EJ deserves it right now. He hasn’t even been with the team an entire season yet! Hejduk should be offered the C first. This could allow several more years (we hope) for Duchene/Johnson/O’Reilly/Stastny/Landeskog? to distinguish themselves as captain material. However, if the Duke doesn’t want it, it should go to Stastny.
Also, I think this decision would have been much easier if we still had Liles.

What I tried to say in #2....
but better.
Hey, you don’t need to have a letter on your jersey to be a leader in the dressing room. Many people can be vocal and fire people up to lead. I hope everyone in that dressing room has a chip on their shoulder and is anxious to improve on last years tank job/shit show. we have a lot of players who should show us, and hte NHL, what they are capable of.
But of all the people in that dressing room, the Duke deserves the right of first refusal for captain of the Avs.
Here's my picks...
Hejduk: Captain
Johnson: A
Stastny: A
O’Reily: A

One thing to remember is, as Sandie mentioned, this issue was discussed during the season ticket holder conference call back in April. Paraphrasing, Sherman said who gets the C is entirely up to the players. They had about 4 guys in mind, and it’s up to them to show they deserve it. This leads me to two conclusions:
1. They won’t decide until after camp at the earliest, maybe not even until a couple pre-season games are under the belt.
2. If no one rises to the challenge, it will go to Duke or possibly 3 As.
I do not think they’re going to force the issue. They know whomever they pick needs to be a part of the big plans for the team for a long time.

I’d like some opinions. What does everyone view as the role of a team captain? Do you believe that a team’s captain really makes much of a difference, more so on a young team than a team full of veterans?
Check out my girlfriends business at www.AllyBStudio.com
As grandma always says, Fuck the Red Wings, indeed.
My 2¢
As far as I can tell, the role of the C is to do one thing, harp at the ref. Everything that’s done in the room or off the ice can be done by any player on the team. Joe Sakic wasn’t a fire and brimstone guy with speeches in the locker room, but on the ice, you better believe he had the ref’s ear.

Doesn’t make much difference. Have you ever heard anyone say that so-and-so is a crappy captain while he actually has the captaincy? The back-stabbing is usually after the fact.
Usually goes to the best player. I’m sure having a personality helps, too, but I’m also sure there are leaders in the room who have no visible personality (like McClement, who was given the A in a late-season game and who was specifically mentioned by Sherm as a possible captain in his summer conference call).
I’ve heard that some captains are the go-between that bridges the head coach and the players. Seems like most rooms are pretty self sufficient, though.

Why? because he is (will be) the face of this franchise; because of the passion he brings; because he has 50.000 twitter followers; because of that fist pump when Hedman was picked second; because he can drink 2 bottles of vodka and still win a race the next day (ok… not 2… but still); because he loves to score against the Wings; because he needs some more motivation on his contract year (ok… this one is stupid); because this franchise will build on the previous success stories going with young captains (pens, hawks)…
and last but not least: because I want a damn Duchene jersey with the damn C on it… Damn it! :)

Let’s hope for some higher resolution pics tomorrow, I’m looking forward to seeing his mask. It sound similar to his last Caps mask though, he had Caps across the top, lots of symbols on the sides (stars, George Washington, eagles, etc) and Varly across the chin. He always puts Never Give Up and the Russian flag on the back. I wouldn’t be surprised if he eventually gets something for Lokomotiv on the back.
Patience
I’d prefer Duke wear it until he retires until someone pulls away from the pack more. I’d hate to see it given to Statsny or Duchene prematurely and a few years later everyone wishes it had gone to Radar / Landeskog / EJ or something.
It would be a critical error
if Duchene got the C because it is well known that he was a Sakic fanboy and this is his favorite squad.
I am not against Dutch getting the C, but I want the person who wears it to have EARNED it. You are kidding yourself if you think Hejduk wears it this year. He earned it, but will not want it – not his style.
I see the C as a 3 pony race – Staz, Johnson, Duchene. Johnson and Duchene are long term moves, looking for a 10 year captain. If it goes to Staz he may well be a 10 year guy, but I could also see him as a 3 year captain before he gets traded. Few things are certain in the NHL these days but given that they just traded for Johnson and Dutch is their posterboy, Stastny is the most “tradeable” leader on the team.
by RyanO'Reilly FanClub on Sep 14, 2011 3:51 PM MDT reply actions
The reason this is such an interesting debate is all of the frontrunners have a flaw.
Hejduk is close to retiring.
Stastny could be traded.
O’Reilly is too young.
Duchene is too young and may not be the Captain type.
EJ has been here for a whopping 22 games.
Landeskog has never played in the NHL.
But on the other hand, all of them have amazing upside.
Hejduk is the quite veteran that can guide all the young players.
Stastny is seemingly well liked and respected in the lockerroom and has been groomed for the position.
O’Reilly has incredible drive and from what I’ve read, an almost Sakic-like presence in the lockerroom.
Duchene is the best player on the team and face of the franchise.
EJ is taking on the role as a leader both on and off the ice. (He’s also the only defenseman, which may or may not come into play).
Landeskog has the personality and maturity to blossom into an excellent captain.
The poison that the Avs pick will say a lot about what they think this team is about and which direction they see it going for the next 10 years.
Just a Colorado girl in Montana who <3s the Avs.
Is it October yet?
Yakupov will wear it.
I love it

Signed,
Caps Fans. (Suck it, Ovi)
A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.
