The relevance of the Allen Americans CHL affiliate.

Greg Sherman has kept himself busy this year. He has been very aggressive in the trade market, never shying away from a bold move. All the die hard Avs fans can only hold on for the emotional roller coaster he puts us through as we learn to love what a player brings to the team, only to see them shipped to St. Louis. We like to think he has a vision, or a least a good idea of what the team still needs.

One thing we can fault Sherman on is the depth he has added to the organization. We may still be struggling to find concrete wingers, but for the most part, we have enough players within the organization to fill the Avalanche, LE Monsters, and the Allen Americans. Lets take a look at the D-Men that have a shot to crack the roster:

  1. E. Johnson
  2. J. Hejda
  3. R. O'Byrne
  4. K. Quincey
  5. S. O'Brien
  6. S. Elliott
  7. R. Wilson
  8. M. Hunwick
  9. K. Cumiskey
  10. J. Holos,
  11. T. Barrie
  12. C. Gaunce

That technically is enough to fill all the defenseman spots for Lake Erie and the Avalanche. What will happen to David Liffiton? How many of these players will be traded away by the end of the season? Will Lake Erie be the AHL champions? This is just the defense. Our offense could see guys like Olver, McLoed and Porter in danger of spending the season with the LE Monsters.

But the good outweighs the bad. There should be a lot of competition to make the roster this year. Sherman is going to separate the men from the boys. We may have to wish some of our favorites a bittersweet farewell. More depth will also mean being less affected by injuries as long as our key players can stay mostly healthy and may also help develop more leadership within the organization by creating more adversity.  The organization isn't done with the rebuilding, but we are getting closer.

We talk about the breakout seasons fans are expecting from the players, but what about the busts? Who will we be saying goodbye to this season?
