Daily Cupcakes- September 15th, 2011
Only a couple of links today, the Denver Post has photos up from the Colorado Avalanche rookie training camp. Including pictures of Peter Mueller with a dark visor, Duncan Siemens who looks incredibly young, and Gabriel Landeskog.
Steve Moore is going to get his day in court, the dates have been set. It has the potential to get ugly too with Todd Bertuzzi suing Marc Crawford for the potential settlement.
Bertuzzi contends that Crawford encouraged him to avenge Moore’s hit on then Canucks captain Markus Naslund in a game three weeks before the incident in Vancouver. Crawford denies that he sent Bertuzzi on the ice to exact retribution.
The stakes are high for Crawford, the Canucks and particularly Bertuzzi, who now plays for the Detroit Red Wings. While the Canucks and Crawford are covered by the team’s insurance policy, Bertuzzi is not because he pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to probation and 80 hours of community service.
Bertuzzi, 36, will be personally liable for any damages that may be awarded, although the Canucks’ insurance policy only covers the team and Crawford up to $10-million with an additional $1-million for legal fees.
Details about the MHH fantasy hockey pool will be released later on in the day.

Being a Christian...
I believe in mercy… honestly I forgive Bertuzzi for what he did despite his lack of genuine (public) repentance; but who am I to judge? What Bertuzzi does behind close doors is between him and his God. But I am excited for Steve Moore to get his day in court for a number of reasons:
1) The NHL, Colorado Avalanche, and the Vancouver Canucks will all have to finally face this horrible incident and not sweep it under the carpet.
2) If Steve Moore wins he and his family will be taken care of.
3) The NHL will see that headshots, cheap hits could have potential legal ramifications and monetary consequences and hopefully the NHL will do more to protect its players than just lipservice to repeat offenders (Matt Cooke).
All in all, I’m not pushing my beliefs but I finally had to forgive Bertuzzi for what he did because the situation was tearing me apart since I witnessed it in 2004. That may sound stupid, but it was almost as if the game lost something when that happened…
I hope everyone here has a great day…this hockey season cannot come soon enough.

The thing I found interesting is that the team and coach, and players, have a 1 million dollar insurance policy that covers this sort of thing. The only reason Bertuzzi isn’t covered by it is that he pled guilty to the crime.

Sounds like he sue his lawyers for not advising him to plead no contest.
Nothing is beautiful and true.
Even then, Moore is suing for 38 million +. I’m sure Bertuzzi doesn’t want to pay that, so he’s suing Crawford as a third party saying that he was “forced” to do it by Crawford.

Didn’t he start transferring his assets into his wife’s name shortly after the incident? Of course he doesn’t want to pay it. Are the Canucks going to blame the city of Vancouver for this also? Personally, Crawford deserves some blame for this if only because of the smirk on his face when it happened.
If Sakic forgives Bertuzzi then I’m leaning towards that as well.
The thing is, Moore should be compensated and if he’s got brain damage then money is never going to fix that part of his life. I think the case will finally settle out of court. The only reason it hasn’t settled before this is because the Moore camp and Bertuzzi/Crawford are too far apart. Now that it’s getting down to trial time, I’m sure a large settlement will be offered.
I'll keep this brief.
I imagine it would be in the NHL’s best interest to “influence” a settlement of some kind as well. Having this drug out through the courts only gives ESPN more non-hockey hockey material to bash.

In all seriousness
I am considering writing an amicus brief on Moore’s behalf. It wouldn’t do a whole lot, but I would feel like I was contributing to getting that douchebag punished.

Myers signs a 7 year contract for an average of 5.5.
Am I the only one who thinks he’s unproven to be earning that kind of money? $10m signing bonus?! I know the Sabres aren’t used to spending money, but this is kinda ridiculous with him and Erhroff.

That's a whoooole lot of coin
being tied up in a first pairing but they have two, young, very talented defenders locked up for a long time. Couple that with a world-class goaltender and that’s not the worst way to build a team.

There is a chance he goes all Steve Mason on Buffalo. Unlikely, but still. They sure are paying for potential. I really hope this is not a platform for EJ.

so it could be (I said as much on Twitter two nights ago) but it doesn’t strike me as the Avs way

Who are the two young defenders you are speaking of? Erhroff?
The only two defenders I want to lock up are Norris calibre plus his partner of choice. Erhroff is a massive overpayment too. More so than Myers.
Paul Stastny did, what Paul Stastny does. Score big goals.
Ehrhoff is only a cap hit of 4 a year
and the guy just scored 50 and is in his prime. It’s pretty obvious Buffalo isn’t building for 5 years from now. They’re building for right now and Ehrhoff is a pretty solid guy to go with. It wasn’t like Florida who went out and paid a whole bunch of average chums big money. Buffalo went out and signed players. Myers may never live up to that $5.5 number (let’s be honest, there are maybe 10 defenseman in the NHL worth that kind of money) but there’s almost no doubt he’s going to be a Top 2 guy for the life of that contract. He had a great first season and then after struggling out of the gate, turned it on and was one of their best defensemen down the stretch. He’s a pimp.

Ehrhoff’s numbers are skewed though…does he deserve the 10million he’s getting this year? 4plus a bonus of 6m?
10million dollars for a defenseman like Ehrhoff?!
Paul Stastny did, what Paul Stastny does. Score big goals.
If we take out those pathetic 1m per year in his last 3 years…he’s making an average of 5.29M, is he worth that now?
That’s overpayment for a guy who will retire in those 1M years and flat out is not worth that kind of money. He put those numbers up in Vancouver with a stacked blueline and a stacked PP. His cap hit might make it justifiable, but he’s not worth that front loaded contract.
Paul Stastny did, what Paul Stastny does. Score big goals.
Selanne signs 1 year/4m with the Ducks. Did anyone think he’d really retire? He’s a robot just like Lidstrom.
