Colorado Avalanche at Dallas Stars: Preseason Game 1 Preview
We've spent the last few months licking our chops for hockey to start again, and tonight is the night. Sort of. As expected, the Avalanche will take a mostly B-Squad group to Dallas tonight with just 5 or 6 regulars from last year making the trip. The rest of the vets, like Mr Hejduk above, will have to wait until Friday when the Avalanche host the Blues at the Pepsi Center.
David Liffiton and Jonas Holos will make their debuts tonight after sitting out the Burgundy & White game. Oh, and here are the guys who are expected to play for the Stars.

I got my tickets for tonights game and was telling my boys. My oldest (6 yrs old) says,
“I cant wait to Duchene”
“Sorry he wont be there”
“Well then Stastny”
“Nope”
“Hejduk? he always plays”
“Sorry”
“Var. . . the new goalie?”
“No”
“Dad, you told me we would go to the Avs game, this is not the Avs. I think we should go to the next one. I got all of my spelling test correct so far. You promised an Avs game.”
“Ok, we will go to the next game and not to this one”
“Dad dont be silly, we shouldn’t be wasteful, we will go to both”.
“That sounds fair”
“Oh yeah, mommy has to work on that day so we should go to the game on Saturday also”
Whose kid is this. Feel like a got the spawn of Robert Shapiro. At least I get 3 games this year live.
Great argument tactic. Demand something else but use logic to maintain the original. Then use opportunism to get a third thing.

No just the once haha. The tow truck driver was awesome though. He knew my folks from a Super Bowl party. He cut me some slack on the fee (like cleanup and everything for free) since my folks were Broncos fans haha. The last 2 1/2 years in Japan has been good for me. Don’t own a car here and watching all the aggressive driving over here has made me really defensive in my driving. Certainly a much safer driver now.

LOL
My brother’s car went Kaput while we were on the highway on Good Friday. Like any normal, rashional adults are likely to do, we popped the hood and went “Oh Shit, there’s sooo much smoke”, then I called my mother to get CAA’s number, to get a tow truck. Apparently they charge 5$ for every km. The tow truck driver had the same Blackberry as me, he had just gotten his and had a small, trivial, question. I helped him out, and got our tow – all 18 kms, for free. Sometimes, being nice helps!

personally i’m kind of hoping this roster makes it into the season

With the 11th pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, the Colorado Avalanche select....from the Saskatoon Blades, Duncan Siemens.
I kinda started following him on twitter. :-)
But really, roster is overcrowded and Galiardi looks like only one with any value who is also expendable.
but what would we be looking to get back? there is a logjam on defense as well as the bottom 6 forwards. the only glaring need is a top 6 forward, which galiardi is not going to net us. perhaps trade him for a draft pick, but i can’t see someone giving up more than a 4th round pick for him as he is still largely unproven, and personally I don’t think that’s good value at all.
if they really want to trade him, i would say let him start the year, develop some value then pawn him off for something of actual worth

I really don’t call Galiardi “expendable” at this moment. I call him reasonably priced, quality production. You know, the sort of thing the Avs front office is unlikely to trade away.

the Avs don’t really need to make any trades of “value” unless it’s landing a top player. The Avs will hold onto the depth as much as possible to stem the tide of injuries.

TJ Galiardi and the Avs as a successful playoff team
Here’s my thesis. TJ Galiardi exhibits (or at least, has exhibited) the type of personality and play that this team needs all-around to be a successful team in the playoffs. He plays hard. He plays gritty. He plays strong, He annoys the f*ck out the opposition. He’s capable of putting all that aside on a moment’s notice and help pot a pretty goal. And he has fun doing it. His temper doesn’t flair and cause him to do something stupid. He takes his punches and punches back when and where it hurts, discreetly when possible. If our defense and defensive forwards could all play like that, we’d be a fun team to watch and a dangerous playoffs contender.
I understand TJ isn’t a core player and is therefore expendable for trade, but I’d just hate to see it happen. The enthusiasm of the young guys like TJ, Radar, Stastny and Duchene are the best thing about this team. They’ve caused my love for this team to grow. Something that hasn’t happened since the hay-days of Sakic/Foppa/Tangs/Duke/Roy.

I know how gritty TJ is and i know that such characteristics win you games. Especially in the playoffs. But come deadline time if we are already out of the playoff contention he is a prime candidate to be traded for a pick.
No matter what happens between now and the deadline the Avs will be a prime trading partner because they’ve got the most cap space.
If the Avs had a choice they would use the asset they have the most of, a puck moving defenseman.
I'll keep this brief.
Hey Dario, did you answer the callout on Vic and Gary today? They did a crappy rant on NHL enforcers and how dangerous and unnecessary they are before they brought on Shannon Sharpe to glorify how he had to shoot up with pain killers in order to be able to play a football game.
4th biggest pessimist of MHH.
"There's always next season." -- Jimmy Howard on not winning the Calder Trophy.
No, I started to listen but they covered Football, the NBA players overseas and then baseball for a while and I turned it off. I’ve tried to educate them on talking about hockey but it’s a failed experiment unless they have an interview on the radio with Dater or a player. I was hoping with three sports talk radio stations we’d get some diversity of subject matter but it’s just not happening.
I'll keep this brief.
T.J. probably wouldn’t garner that great of a pick seeing as Liles only returned a 2nd rounder. Rather keep him and let him develop.

Perhaps packaged for a high pick or key player, but Gali is pretty damn young and if he plays well this season, I don’t see why the Avs would feel the need to “try again” with a draft pick. It only makes sense if they get a bigger piece out of the deal, in which case Gali would only be one part of the deal.

Ryan Kesler & RJ Umberger
Someone needs to go look up those types of players and how important they are. They don’t develop overnight.
Languishing for Landeskog
I think Landeskog, Galiardi and Radar are bring those “intangibles” that you need come playoff time. I don’t like the word, and I don’t like to rely on people that haven’t, quite frankly done anything in the playoffs, but that’s how I look at Galiardi and those other two. One of those guys are the type of players that rise up during a series or playoff run.
Paul Stastny did, what Paul Stastny does. Score big goals.
exactly
Players like Galiardi and Landeskog are the ones who will drive the other teams crazy and be very good players at both ends of the ice. I hate to use “game changers” to describe them but they are in their own way. While your top scorers will use their skill to change a game and enforcers/grinders will use their hard “hitting” to change the momentum… its players like Landeskog and Galiardi that bring some of both types of players to the ice. Very important players to winning cups… especially if they step up even more in the playoffs offensively.
Languishing for Landeskog

Is it on Dallas TV? I think GameCenter live is in their free preview mode right now so it could be available online.
No soup for you!
NVM, I just saw on the Dallas site that there is no local radio or tv for the game.
No soup for you!
Yup…no feeds. Sad. Of course the first pre-season game isn’t aired. I understand it’s just pre-season, but when every other team seems to have had their games aired it’s a little frustrating.

Not me. not when we still have so much offseason stuff to cover. I hear Andi has a chart coming soon that compares time on ice with astrological symbols to determine once and for all which sign we should look for in free agency. Also, phrenology is making a comeback because of concussions, and we’ve barely scratched the surface there.
