Three more Cuts
Three more cuts today and, as promised, they are significant names: Jonas Holos, Cameron Gaunce and Ryan Stoa. I don't have my spreadsheet with me to update all the battles, so you'll still have to work off of the most recent one for now. 31 players left.

I actually thought Holos looked really good last night. I was commenting how he looked like a new skater. Maybe one game wasn’t enough….
It was a foregone conclusion that Holøs and Gaunce would start the year in Erie. The only real question (with the D) was Elliott, but I think Barrie might be making a case for himself as well.
And it has begun....

But how many players can be on our opening night roster?
And who’s currently injured? I know that Hejda and Yip are hurt, and I think I saw somewhere that Wilson is hurt, too, right?
So who’s next to go?

Yip (injured)
Left Defense:
Hejda (injured)

Right Defense:

O’Byrne
Elliott
Barrie
Goalie:
Varlamov
Giguere
Cann

So with 10 D men…we need to get rid of 2-3. If I had my say it’d be Hunwick, Cumiskey and Elliott.
But since Hejda and Wilson are out, Hunwick will probably stay.

Hunwick would get snagged in waivers by a D-shallow team in the East and the Avs would have nothing to show for it. He’ll stay up and each nachos.

That seems to be the Avs approach. Trade highly regarded prospects who don’t work out for a year of AHL leadership. Maybe they’ll be smart and get someone else’s player who is struggling too and they ignite it here. Plenty of 21-23 year olds teams are ready to give up on or try something new.
Languishing for Landeskog
It’d have to be Stoa +. Turris can at least hang in the NHL, Stoa doesn’t seem to be able to.
Anyway, considering our depth at center, this wouldn’t be a good trade for us anyway.

Pure speculation
I have seen exactly 0 hockey so far this year (any of the preseason games televised locally?) but here’s my wildly speculative assumptions on the “Still to be cut”list:
G:
Cann
LW:
Olver
Malone
RW:
Porter
D:
Cumiskey
Elliott
Barrie
This would leave 22 on the roster (plus 3 injured), so I guess one of these guys would make it (rosters are 23 right?). So Cumiskey probably gets to keep his press box seat for now.

Hmm, Maybe I should think Cumiskey will be sent down instead of Porter. McLeod’s fallen out of favor, but the Avs have very little in the way of role players who can be a pest. Is Malone up to that? who knows. McLeod can and lackluster results aside, it’s an element he brings to the team.

as Cumiskey would have to pass through waivers to be sent down, I ’m actually expecting Barrie or Elliott for the replacement D spot.
once again, NHL ’XX teaches incorrect things.
a 2 way only refers to the amount of money they will be paid if they’re sent down, that’s it’s different in one league vs. the other. it has no bearing on waiver status, unlike the NHL ’XX games.
waiver status is about years experience and games played. PPP had a nice post with all the details: http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2009/11/26/1174855/waivers-101-a-guide-to-the-nhl

I don't see why Cumiskey on waivers is a big deal
He had all off-season to generate interest. He hasn’t played in the pre-season. Why would Cumiskey on waivers be an issue in the slightest? If a team claims him, enjoy, but we should all know that won’t happen.
A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.

don't think so
They like Malone (so do I a lot) and Olver is not really a 4th line guy so I think he stays. No way Porter getting cut, they need him and his salary.
Elliot or Barrie, one or the other will stay b/c they need some offense from the D, who else besides EJ has any scoring.
Hard to say but I agree Cumiskey is the odd guy out on D, they really need to trade him or Hunwick. Speaking of Hunwick, anybody heard how Colby Cohen is doing/looking. I don’t mind saying I hated that trade, esp. when they had Cumiskey, Liles and Shatty, all small D in same mold roughly.
I think there’s a good chance they are trying to trade a couple guys. McClement to me is def. an odd fit and he may help a team poised for run at cup. I could see him, Cumiskey or Hunwick, and maybe even Winnick get moved for a prospect or pick.

I don’t think they would see limited time if they are dressed. According to the stats at NHL.com, even when Belle was up he was getting 17 mins/game. Hunwick and Holos were over 18 mins. Cumiskey was at 19 mins in his few outings. Sacco doesn’t seem to hide his lower D pairing much.
And I would assume that either or both of them would see PP time as well.
Sacco’s got some tough decisions ahead.

I agree somewhat, but with the likes of Johnson/Hedja and O’Bryne/Quincey, I don’t think the 3rd pairing is going to get that much time on ice any more, no more than 12-15 tops.
Chip, I'm gonna come at you like a spider monkey!

I’d still like to see Quincey traded and one of them become a regular, not a 7th D. I think either of them would bring an offensive dimension to the team that is now needed since we’ve swung the other way, and both of course has much more potential upside than Hunwick, Holos and Cumiskey. We may see one of them start the season with the big club anyway due to the Hejda and Wilson injuries. Here is what I would do once Quincey is traded and everyone is healthy:
1. Hejda=EJ
2. SOB-Elliot or Barrie
3. Wilson-ROB

I’d rather get a BAMF return than a 4th rounder.
I need a drink, please.

If Sherman gets a 2nd rounder for Liles…what good is Quincey worth?
Paul Stastny did, what Paul Stastny does. Score big goals.
More than Wilson.

Came here during last season’s Memorial Cup iirc.
Datsyuk may have done it first, but he learned it from Peter Forsberg.
Thanks for everything Foppa!

During the OHL playoffs; I asked some white guy about Blacker and he mentioned that he always shouts it during a game.

And by "some white guy", I mean the above member. Not some random white man. LOL.

Don’t make Shanny have to make a ruling. You ain’t going to like it.

Speaking of suspensions..
Still no word wether the league will even look at the Souray hit from yesterday?
Not yet.
The Wiz ban game from a Friday game so we’ll see in a couple days.
I love it

DP post kinda funny....
I read the denverpost version of this story also —→ Read the comments of the (very)few guys on there. A random fan says Avs fan’s are uneducated about hockey and like 5 guys in a row rip on the douchelord named J something. Haha as much as I love MHH and think the DP is a joke, it was quite funny.
On an ending note, good cuts. No need to wait around on these guys and waste minutes. Unfortunately, we may see all 3 of them again at some point during the season though…
Oct. 8... is it here yet?
question
anybody heard anyhting about Kobasew in camp yet, I haven’t.? Per comments above on Dmen, I think they realize they need depth (see 2010), so they will likely keep 7-8. I think the interesting decisions will be who are the 3rd and 4th lines. Do they want offense from 3rd line. It could be pretty good with oreilly, TJ, Kobasew? anyway, they will have lots more depth and that will help. They are really in a prime position to pull off a big trade as mid-season, maybe they could get Stewart back! I wish!
by the cool breeze on Sep 27, 2011 11:27 AM MDT reply actions
Kobasew is baaaaaaad. Camp and preseason keep reiterating this fact. I was holding out hope that AJ would be wrong on this, but he is so so right. Bad, bad, bad.
And it has begun....

last question
How’s Hishon doing? He should be ready to play in NHL now (20 I think). He would help the power play, good 2nd unit guy maybe.
by the cool breeze on Sep 27, 2011 11:30 AM MDT reply actions
He’s still recovering from a concussion from a cheap shot during the OHL playoffs last season.

by Cheryl Bradley on Sep 27, 2011 11:51 AM MDT up reply actions
yeah
I knew that, was wondering if he had recovered from the concussion. Guess not. It’s a little scary b/c they had said over summer he was ready to go and he’s still sitting.
by the cool breeze on Sep 27, 2011 12:18 PM MDT up reply actions
Actually, over the summer he said that he still was having issues.
