Put the shots on net

Stay connected for news and updates

I know this comes as no big surprise, but if the Avs are going to change things they need to put more shots on net. Last night the Avs got out shot 26-10 for a period of time. They had chances to make that number better however I kept hearing "missed nearside", "shot over the net", "failed to get to the lose puck" and most commonly "missed wide". I wanted to see what the difference between a playoff team and a non playoff team.

What I did is took the top three guys with shot totals from each playoff team and calculated the average.  Here is the break down.

New York Rangers- 218, 202, 192 - 204
Phoenix- 240, 221, 199 - 220
Buffalo- 238, 215, 210 - 222
LA Kings- 233, 228, 213 - 225
Boston- 264, 211, 201 - 225
Pittsburgh- 236, 234, 212 - 227
Nashville- 265, 254, 192- 237
Montreal- 298, 227, 201 - 242
Tampa- 272, 254, 210 - 245
Vancouver- 264, 211, 201 - 247
Detroit- 306, 248, 192 - 249
Chicago- 268, 251, 233 - 251
Philly- 335, 246, 184 - 255
Anaheim- 290, 270, 213 - 258
Washington- 367, 207, 203 - 259
San Jose- 282, 279, 253 - 271

Colorado- 202, 181, 170 - 184

This is just a huge discrepancy.  I know loses are a team effort.  But it would be nice if we could have a true go to guy.  A guy who is going to score or make the opposing goalie beat us.  This however was not the worse year in Avalanche history but it was close by a matter of percentage points.  Some one has to step up.  Colorado history is as follows.

10-11- 202, 181 170 - 184
09-10- 221, 199, 180 - 200
08-09- 257, 211, 169 - 212
07-08- 205, 179, 168 - 184 (worse year)
06-07- 258, 257, 211- 242
05-06- 264, 263, 221 - 249
03-04- 253, 242, 237 - 244
02-03- 269, 244, 191 - 234
01-02- 260, 236, 229 - 242
00-01- 332, 267, 216 - 272
99-00- 260, 242, 233 - 245
98-99- 301, 292, 255 - 283
97-98- 261, 254, 202 - 239
96-97- 261, 232, 198 - 230
95-96- 339, 315, 229 - 294

I really think the magic number for the Avs would be 200 and that is not a guarantee, but at least we would be competitive.  I just want to see more shots on net and less on boards. (Sb is really screwing up right now so I hope this goes through in a readable manner)
