McPhee talked to some Caps STH and shared more details about the Varly trade, including:

Varly and the Caps were in agreement on terms and "only $50,000 apart in salary when everything just stopped." Apparently after a few days they had his US agent look into why he hadn't responded to their offer, and he found out that "Varlamov's father had accepted money from the KHL club to help sway him" to sign there.

"I'm hoping we win the Stanley Cup and Colorado does poorly, so we get both the 1st and 30th picks in the first round."

Hrm interesting. Well I hope that Varly and the newer less shitty defense shut GMGM up a little bit.

Don’t know if you guys are still following the thread at Japers, but another person at that same STH event added a better timeline in the comments. Here it is if you don’t want to go back there.

The timing of it all was clearer. GMGM said he had a deal in place with a three year term a week before free agency. But nothing was signed by that Monday. They were baffled. So they called the NA agent who was also surprised and annoyed, and he said he would find out what’s going on. Turns out, as you noted, that Varly’s dad had accepted money from the club to persuade Varly to return to the KHL. There must have been some kind of back and forth late that week because at the convention GMGM said that he was not told definitively that Varly was signing with the KHL until the morning of July first. He fleshed out in greater detail why he was worried about losing Varly to a waiver claim as well as an offer sheet plus waivers if he tried to come back early.
GMGM also said in response to a later question that Varly and his dad’s pride was hurt when he didn’t get to start in the playoffs. He said that Varly was told that he wasn’t pulled in his playoff runs and they weren’t going to pull Neuvy in his. That he needed to be patient.

I’m not exactly sure I’m comfortable with someone whose Dad has that much say over the direction of his son’s career.

Mitigating factor – Varly is all of 23 years old and is living and working in a foreign country where he has a moderate command of the language.

Though it sounds like his dad engaged in the proud and long standing Russian tradition of corruption and graft with relation to his son’s career, it’s not quite as stark as Daddy holding all the strings, or most of them.

I think his father could be an issue, but ultimately Varly left Russia and came back to the US alone on June 29 and made the decision to accept the trade and sign with Colorado without talking to his dad or Russian agent. So he still stuck with what he wanted, which was to play in the NHL, over what his dad wanted. But it does sound like his dad and Russian agent kept him from re-signing with the Caps.

Slava Malamud gave a radio interview in July after the trade where he said Varly wanted a quieter environment and a less high profile team and a place where he could be the guy. So it sounds like he ended up in the kind of situation he wanted, other than the whole goalie coach issue.

If that isn’t up on the f’ing bulletin board on December 17th somebody isn’t doing their job.

I feel like a GM, should never publicly wish a team to lose…

by ProfessorOak on Sep 30, 2011 11:49 PM MDT reply actions

I agree that it makes McPhee look bad in my opinion to publicly gloat that way. I think it’s best to keep those feelings a little bit quieter. It’s already obvious to everyone that he wants to get back the highest pick possible. Actually I think some of this gloating has to do with how McPhee views the 2012 draft, he considers it to be very strong. He didn’t like the 2011 draft and traded the Caps #1 pick to Chicago for Brouwer because of that. So getting an extra 2012 pick a lot higher than the Caps pick would make him giddy. He actually winked at the camera when Kuznetsov fell to the Caps in 2010 because he considered him to be worth a lot higher draft pick.

Actually, I hope Colorado beats them for the SC. Thus the Caps get the 29th and 30th picks next year.

I hope in the midst of the season they trade our first round plus their first round pick back to us for Trevor Cann.

That’s what Sherman played when he traded away our lottery draft pick. /Sarcasm (in case that was needed).
