Peter Mueller is set to return!!
According to the Colorado Avalanche Twitter Peter Mueller is available to play in the NHL once again.
UPDATE: Peter Mueller has been activated from IR and is available tomorrow...Shane O'Brien placed on IR retro to January 7.
When Cheryl and I attended part of a practice on December 17th, we noticed that he looked great out there. We also talked about the fact that he wasn't wearing an orange "no contact" jersey. We also found out that, at that point, he has been practicing with the team - and flying across the ice- for about a month.
It's important to note that Mueller will be sporting a new bucket. One that is expected to better protect his head. Let's hope that this helmet keeps his noggin from getting bounced around too much. Just because he has been reactivated doesn't mean that he will play in the next game, as the Avs have proved they don't mind sitting guys who are healthy once again.

I still think he should get a couple of games in LE just to make sure he’s ready to play….but I guess we’ll see how his first game goes, when ever that occurs.
Datsyuk may have done it first, but he learned it from Peter Forsberg.
Thanks for everything Foppa!

If he’s really been practicing with the team for a month, I don’t think he will need it.
Thanks, Joe... Thanks, Peter.... Thanks, Adam....
In about twenty minutes, I’ll be posting a shit ton of videos and notes from practice on Monday. I think you’ll see he looks fine.

Seriously. It’s just too bad that my trip to CA coincided with a long home stand and the unemployment is coinciding with a month-long road trip. But I will get to as many practices as I can.

Did you see that the Rangers were supposedly going to ask Wolski and Christensen if they’d accept assignments to Hartford for conditioning? So I have no idea how that works, if the team can do it or if they have to get the players to accept it. No clue.
Players have to agree to it. If it’s just the team, waivers become an issue.

I was at Game #1 against the winged wheels.
The guy behind me was bemoaning the Avs play the entire game (justifiably).
At the end of the game he was bitching up a storm. I turned to him and said “You have to look at the positives. Mueller made it through an entire game without a concussion.”
Yeah, I felt terrible when Mueller was out again just a few games later.
Good luck Peter. Good for you and godspeed.
I think he should play as soon as possible. He’s been waiting for months and before that over a year. He deserves to play.
A man who stole my whisky used the defense that no one could resist a bottle of Scotch. I had no choice but to testify on his behalf.
If nothing else, the Avs need any potential scoring they can get. If that comes in the form of ol’ bruisey brain, if he’s cleared and ready to go, I’m in.

I would demote one or the other for different reasons
Jones – He hasn’t produced since being back he hasn’t looked great at all he really has been the disappointment of the season imo
Gali – I love this Gali we are seeing and he is doing great as a filler but his bread and butter is that 3rd checking line him Winnik and McClement are just Money on that line I would like to see him back there. And put it this way he doesn’t have the offensive potential Jones or Mueller does (not saying either of them will produce but the potential is there more than it is with Gali)
Reasons to keep either one
Jones – A line of Gali/Stats/Mueller doesn’t have that in front of net presence they could really use that Jones can bring (not saying he is doing that now but he can do it)
Gali – He has been flying, making the smart plays the majority of the time and really helped sustain pressure on that top line and is for right now generating offensive opportunities
Its a tough choice but right now is best time to chance it for a game or two and not when we are fighting tooth and nail for that 8th spot at end of season

Jones; Not gonna lie, the dudes been MIA for a long long time… but he was doing things last night that I haven’t seen him do (TWSS), things like going into the corners and out-muscling guys and walking out with the puck and driving to the net (all in the same play). If he can keep feeding off the work ethic of Stastny/Gali, I see no reason to break up that line…
Mueller: Ease him in… play him on the point on the powerplay.

Mueller is playing for his contract more than anyone else is right now because of his injury history, think he needs to play real well for the Avs to re-sign him?

I thought about that, too. I actually don’t think that the Avs would be crazy to re-sign him. He would have to play well, and be symptom free. But we stuck with him, and he is going to remember that; theres a lot to be said for loyalty, and I don’t want the Avs to forget that, even tho they are running a business.

Totally. I remember in early interviews (and I spent hours trying to find them but couldn’t) I remember Mueller talking about how the Yotes rushed him back and how unhappy he was about it. The time and energy the Avs have put into him and the patience they’ve shown have cemented his appreciation for this team, I’m sure.
Speaking of, it’s funny how we all lament the lack of attention the Kroenkes seem to pay the team, but players are always so high on them, even after they leave. Unsolicited praise and affection is so common with the Avs. Tells you a lot, I think.

the fact they stuck with him
He does have a contract. Technically they have to continue to pay him, and keep him with the big club during his recovery, or until his contract expires. I think he also has guaranteed access to facilities and training staff, but I’m not sure about that.
Now, I think the club has been exceedingly patient with him and has not rushed him back. I hope he remains symptom free for the remainder of his career, and he retires an Av as a first ballot HOF player (OK, maybe that’s going a bit far).

Loyalty Over Rated
Welcome back Peter!!!!!! We really need help up front ont the top 6 and at the PP point.
As far as whether he will remain loyal to the Avs, I would argue that this organization has not commanded loyalty in the past so why should it now? If you do not kiss the ring of King Pierre you are gone. Did the Avs receive loyalty after the lockout when Blake, Foote and Forsberg walked for more $$$$$ even though it was their bonuses (and Theodore’s contract) that got them in cap trouble. In short, if the money is not there neither wil he be.
Where was the loyalty from Anderson who is now 2nd in the league in wins. He did not kiss the ring so he fell out of favor. Elliot wasn’t nurtured since we have no goalie development or goalie coaching he is gone and so is our #1 pick for next year. Mind you I like Varley and Giggy but would have just as soon had either of the other goalies if they would have performed for us the way they are performing elsewhere. We gave up on Fleischman a well even though he was creating magic with Hejduk. If I am noticing so are the players . So in the end if Mueller can get a better deal he can and he should. What would your do in his shoes or should I say skate?

I just don’t think he “failed to kiss the ring”…the dude just wanted more years on his contract, didn’t get it. Blah blah blah…now he in Ottawa. He started horribly, but he is 6-0-1 in his last 7, his GAA is getting close to 3.00 and his Save % is now over .900. Quite a comeback from his early season suck fest (which was classified as “personal problems” in the Ottawa media…whatever the heck that means).
Plus he has 21 leagues…2nd in the league, and he leads goalies in assists (thank you Mr Karlsson).
I don’t think he’s unhappy at the moment.
ANyway, I have been critical of management for their lowball mentality in the past, I just don’t think it’s quite as cut and dry as Doc Hockey makes it out to be..
Goalie coach? We don't need no stinking goalie coach!
It is cut and dry...kiss the ring or die!!!!!!
You may not realize this, but every player in thehistory of other Colorodo Avalanche who has ever held out has been traded or cut. Go back as far as you want….you won’t find one exception. I had the pleasure of chatting with Joe Sakic last year and even he could not come up with an example of when that was untrue. Look, I have been an Avs fan since the introduction of the team to Denver and an avid hockey fan since 1967 (man am I getting old). I have seen organizations like the Rangers give up their future for washed up stars (like Rick Middleton for Espo), I am not a cynic but rather a keen observer of an organization that is autocratic and arrogant.
Why on earth do you think Drury was traded. Owen Nolan and Chris Simon held out as well. Mike Keane had an amazing locker room presence for this team and was allowed to walk for a paltry couple of hundred k when he signed with the Rangers and was later traded to Dallas. The year Dallas beat us it and won the cup do you think Keane had added Iincentive to prove LaCroix wrong and kick our ass.
Look, I give credit where credit is due and LaCroix put together 3 of the best trades in hockey history with the Lindros deal being perhaps the best deal in the history of all sports. the other 2 deals were for Roy (and Keane), and Borque. But I argue that those deals were deals he fell into and not some strokes of genius as he has been given credit for. In the 90’s we could have won way more than the 2 cups we won had he not been so frivolous with our plethora of draft picks and prospects. Shoot, I cringe every time I hear the name Robin Regehr or even Tom Gilbert.
This organization is inbred and looking for greatness in all the wrong places. Look at the current coaching staff. What qualifications did Le Febvre or Deadmarsh have to coach? Tell me about the hockey pedigree that Greg Sherman (who by the way is earning my respect) has. Why is Eric LaCroix being groomed for management . No nepotism there???? Sakic….another story. This man exudes greatness. Having met him and talked to him on several occasions, it is easy to see first hand the silent leadership qualities he possesses. Kroenke should do with LaCroix et al what Bowlen did with Shanny….thank him for the good years and move on. Give Sakic the reins not Eric. Hire a blue chip coach instead of a blue collar one. I could go on and on….but I enjoy the banter and would enjoy it if the true fans that post here would barage my Tuesday 5pm radio segment on Mile High Sports (1510AM, 97.3FM) with phone calls so they consider extending it from 15 to 30 minutes. Mac and Doog have a great drive time show and are one of the only shows that give a dam about hockey. Cheryl, I would see love to have you as a guest!!!!

Paul Stastny did, what Paul Stastny does. Score big goals.
Wait, didn’t we get Theo when he was on IR?

According to Wiki...
At the time of the trade, Theodore was on the injured reserve; he strained his Achilles tendon after slipping on the winter ice outside his home. He came off the IR with enough time to play in the last five regular season Avalanche games

Theodore was one of the worst trades ever.
First he was injured as you allude to. His contract however made the resigning of Blake, Forsberg and Foote all but impossible after the lockout!

That’s not what caused the issues. The issues were that the Avs had assigned huge bonuses to two of their stars before they found out that the new CBA would not only have a cap, but that the cap would take into account these previously signed bonuses.

I'm glad to see him back. If the Avs are confident that he's recovered, he should have a shot to play again.

So, an Avs player is making another comeback after being sidelined repeatedly due to injury? This player could have just as easily retired but has stuck it out because he loves hockey and wants to play? This player still feels like he has something to contribute?
Obviously there’s only one word to describe this.

It’s important to note that Mueller will be sporting a new bucket. One that is expected to better protect his head

Its got the shaded visor too.
Maybe

In all fairness to the Vader mask above, which was hilarious.
Wasn’t he supposed to be wearing this new helmet all along? I’d be more excited if it wasn’t for Sidney Crosby. The guy took one hard check and is back out. I would guess it could happen to Mueller as well.
I’m excited that Mueller is back, but I’m keeping my hopes in check
Goalie coach? We don't need no stinking goalie coach!
The new helmet he was wearing before was the Easton one. Is there another new one?

The last time I got excited about Mueller coming back, he was taken back out of the lineup, so I’m holding back until I see how he does. Plus, my excitement’s tempered by SOB being placed on IR. Hopefully he isn’t out long.
As far as Mueller, I hope he’s able to live without worrying about dealing with concussion symptoms. Anything beyond that is just gravy. So if he’s able to step-in, not aggravate it and maybe contribute a point here & there, I’m happy. :-)
