Avalanche at Predators, Game 45 Preview

Photo

Annnnnnnnd take two! The Colorado Avalanche and Nashville Predators just saw each other on Tuesday. Unfortunately, the Avs didn't show up until it was too late. Tonight it's important that they do. Another loss would signify a losing spree, and we all know what happens when the boys get on a roll.

Story lines for tonight are all about injuries, at least for the Avalanche. Shane O'Brien is on the IR and, as we expected, will not play tonight. Thus Ryan "Mack Truck" Wilson will play. Erik Johnson is with the team and practiced on Wednesday, but there's no word yet on whether or not he'll play. If he doesn't, Matt Hunwick remains in the line up. The big news, though, is the reactivation of Peter Mueller. He's with the team. He's healthy. But will he play? Why yes. Yes he will. Lines not announced yet, so the mystery of who's not playing remains.

The Preds are just missing one guy, Jerred Smithson (lower body), who also missed Tuesday's game. He's considered questionable for tonight's tilt.

Goaltenders remain the same as Semyon Varlamov will battle Pekka Rinne yet again. Ryan O'Reilly will be playing in his 200th game tonight. Seems like just yesterday when he was a tyke being drafted by the Avs after the Red Wings foolishly passed him by. Now he's the dark horse for the Selke. My my how time flies.

UPDATE: Per Mike Haynes, Giguere will get the start; Mueller, Johnson and Yip are in; Porter, Jones and Hunwick are out. He says Sacco gave him the 411.

Do we know when the morning skate is happening? Chambers said they would evaluate Johnson then and assess. The Avs need him back, badly.

It’s usually either around 9:30 or 11, depending on when the home team wants to practice. Announcements generally come around 1 pm MT.

Looking at the entire 2nd round for 2009..

He did well on the East Coast trip early in the year when run-and-gun was still in vogue. They’ve been playing much more disciplined since, and it doesn’t suit Jones’ game. He needs to park his ass in the slot and start using that size.

I think Landeskog makes Jones unnecessary next year. Sadly. I like Jones and there was a chance he took over for Stewart, but Ladny will do it.

I really don’t want to judge Jones because him, Hejduk, Stastny and Duchene have all had a brutal season so far points wise.

I always thought Jone would take over for Hejduk in the top 6. Not as good of a sniper, but decent hands and more speed. Then this year happened and I don’t know what to think about him.

Jones seems like a super nice guy, but imho he hasn’t ever looked like a permanent solution for the Avs. He doesn’t create enough.

Before the first knee injury a couple of years ago I thought he had more promise. I don’t think he ever regained the speed he used to have before that first injury. Otherwise I thought he had as much potential as Steward did that first season. On a better team I think he could be a 20 goal per season scorer for another 5 to 7 years and that is what makes me nervous about losing him.

Avalanche Hockey: egressing to the mean

by cush52 on Jan 12, 2012 2:13 PM MST up reply actions

It takes a year plus to get back up to speed from a season ending knee surgery doesn’t it?

He’s about 3 months in so far… he’d have better numbers, but I think it’s just a overall disappointment from the guys at the top end (Duchene/Stastny/Hejduk) If they were all scoring, Jones numbers would be up too.

Paul Stastny did, what Paul Stastny does. Score big goals.

by amit916 on Jan 12, 2012 2:23 PM MST up reply actions

The problem with JOnes this year as compared to his last flashes of scoring ability…

He does not drive the net like he used to. He looks like he is trying to play a more finesse type of game, and settles for attempting to tip, or shoot from the outside.

David Jones at his most effective tried to get a step on the defender, and drives the net, usually taking the D man with him. He hasn’t done that this year

Goalie coach? We don't need no stinking goalie coach!

by chiavsfan on Jan 12, 2012 2:29 PM MST up reply actions

I think you hit the nail on the head Chia. Though I have to say I did see him doing that a couple of times in the last few games, which is a couple of times more than the 20 or so games before that.

That is why I didn’t really want to see him in nacho time out. It seemed like he was just figuring out how to get back to his old self.

Avalanche Hockey: egressing to the mean

by cush52 on Jan 12, 2012 2:32 PM MST up reply actions

I think his knee injury cost Jones quickness more than speed. He still has high gear, it just takes him longer to get into it. When his game was working for him last year and the beginning of this year, he was scoring off the rush or off rebounds from the rush. He’s never been much as a cycle-er of the puck, and honestly he looks lost in the more disciplined possession system that Sacco has adopted. FWIW, I think Stewart would have been equally lost. His best power moves were 1-on-1 with speed to the net. I think that’s why he’s struggled in St. Louis.

OK Shermie, time to be the shepherd

by Busted Twigg on Jan 12, 2012 3:08 PM MST up reply actions

His game went super down hill after that trip… because he came back with Duchene-Spin-Syndrome…

He looked much much better on Tuesday though, I saw him hit a guy and seperate the guy from the puck.

Paul Stastny did, what Paul Stastny does. Score big goals.

by amit916 on Jan 12, 2012 2:35 PM MST up reply actions

Jones needs to hit and forecheck.

It just makes him play better and it’s always better for the team anyway. When he’s not scoring, at least he’s pressuring the puck or wearing guys down. A wrist shot sniped past the goalie top shelf has nothing to do with finishing a check but for Jones one things leads to another I’ve noticed.

I'll keep this brief.

I think it kinda is, otherwise we will be starting to play with the need to go to 8-2 to make real progress towards a playoff spot again. Was looking look at the standings and Yotes are 1 pt behind with game in hand, Calgary is 2 pts behind, everyone else is ahead of us and half of them have games in hand. I worry we might fall to far back if we go on a 1-6 streak.

They need two points tonight. Since the game in on the road – regulation, OT, SO – whatever it takes to get the two points.

I keep wondering

What Peter Mueller is feeling. I hope he’s as excited to play as I am to see him play. I’m not expecting great things from him, but it sure will be nice to see him flying down the ice.

by AaronHawn on Jan 12, 2012 3:26 PM MST reply actions

Hopefully not flying down the ice on his back after Weber just layed a furious check on him.

That was my first thought. First game back against Weber and Suter? What could possibly go wrong?

I guess he’ll have to be tested sometime. Might as well be now. I am oh so hopeful he can really come back this time. But also oh so doubtful.

Any hit can do it. Hunwick’s hit is the one that put Savard on the permanent IR. If it’s not those two beasts, then it’ll be different beasts on a different night.

And Mueller wasn’t that bad at the beginning of the season. We managed a whopping 4 goals in those 3 games, he had 5 shots on goal, he had a sweet feed in front that someone whiffed on.

Bottom line is that I’d rather have him in the lineup than on the sidelines.

by DiD on Jan 12, 2012 4:23 PM MST up reply actions

That’s because Hunwick is a wreckless player… he plays with no respect to his opponents, nor the nachos.

Avalanche Hockey: egressing to the mean

by cush52 on Jan 12, 2012 4:46 PM MST up reply actions

See....

If its a clean check that injures him, I say oh well, it wasn’t meant to be. If it’s a dirty hit that injures him, I pray that someone beats the ever living tar out of the poor soul.

Aside: I cant remember, was the hit that Blake laid on him that gave him the concussion in the first place clean?

The way I see it is this: Mueller is a hockey player – he knows what could happen. What might happen. Yet he goes out there anyway. I respect him, and any other player, for that. Takes guts to put on the skates and play in this league.

by AaronHawn on Jan 12, 2012 4:48 PM MST up reply actions

According to the refs working that game and the NHL yes it was a clean hit. According to any one watching the game he hit him in the numbers driving his head into the boards.

I just got back from the liquor store. I really shouldn’t be allowed to go. I planned on getting a 750ml of vodka for a friends birthday, and came out with 12pk Breckenridge Sampler Pack, a handle of vodka, and a liter of gin. And I’m contemplating having a mid-day beverage. Perhaps an iced Negroni. yeah…..

by jd21 on Jan 12, 2012 4:14 PM MST up reply actions

I haven’t found a wheat without a funky aftertaste. The only way I’ve found to hide it is to dump an orange or lemon slice in it. I hate (fresh) fruit in my beer, so I stay away from wheats.

Try White Rascal from Avery Brewing in Boulder. Really clean taste, and I never pollute it with fruit. Its more Belgian style wheat than American, but its one of my faves.

All this beer talk makes me thirsty. and sad. Instead of watching the puck drop I have to go my son’s DARE graduation.

I tried to talk him into ditching, but he’s tanked up on sanctimonious Kool aid. Plus, it’s a free T-shirt he can later use to stuff under the door of his dorm room to keep the smoke from getting out.

Although I’d expect to see one, not sure there’s a direct relation between PP time and success. Boston is about one minute above us, Columbus and Carolina are in the top 4.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/teamstats.htm?fetchKey=20122ALLSAAAll&sort=teamPenaltyDetail.powerplaySeconds&viewName=powerPlayTime

by DiD on Jan 12, 2012 4:57 PM MST up reply actions

But… more time is better… the team at the top has nearly 50% more time than us on the PP….

Granted these numbers are skewed… a powerplay can last 1 second if you score right away etc etc….
