LALALALALA CAN'T HEAR YOU LALALALA!

However, I think we’re a stronger, more complete team than we were last year. Our offense has been missing a bit more than I expected, but our defensive and goalie play has been much stronger overall (today excluded).

Do I think we’ll regress a bit after that super hot December? Yes. And I think that’s what’s going on right now.

But if we get Dutchy back and our top 6… 9… whatever… can remember how to score, we’ll be fine. Maybe not playoff fine, but at least bubble and not #FAILFORNAILFORWASHINGTON (as @NHLTROLL seems to think we should do – funny account BTW) territory.

And if we can add some scoring wingers at the deadline, that might change as well. If we can fix our scoring, I think our defense and goalies (meaning right now mostly Giggy) can get us the rest of the way.

Not sure where to place the blame, but I have my own floor hockey game in a few hours and not even gonna bother pointing the finger. Hopefully my team doesn’t get boat-raced like the Avs did. Few thoughts

Is it just me, or does it look like EJ is quietly becoming the defenseman we need him to be? He’s solid in his end and starting to be an offensive catalyst. I’d say if anyone had a good decent game, it was him. And he seems to be very important to the blueline – they were absolutely horrible in the games he missed. I wonder if all the captain talk at the beginning of the year got to him and messed with his game. He’s still not a franchise defenseman and he still makes mistakes, but I’m seeing progress. Lots of progress. He’s playing very well for a 23-year-old bust.

However, where is Hejduk? I’ve not really seen him all year. I know he’s busy teaching all the pups in the locker room, but we need him on the ice too. I’m really beginning to wonder if this is the last year we’ll see 23 on the ice.

I’m happy Mules is back. He looks GOOD. I can’t wait to see him and Dutchy reunited. I just wish Stastny could return to form consistently. A Dutch – Stazz – Mules line could be fun to watch if he does.

by andidee15 on Jan 16, 2012 5:56 PM MST reply actions

the scary thing is that Hejduk is 2nd on the team in scoring. He HAS been very quiet lately, but he’s not far off his usual 50-point pace. If he was doing that and was 4th or 5th on the team in scoring, all would be fine. Stastny and Duchene, that’s aimed at you

by David Driscoll-Carignan on Jan 16, 2012 6:01 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah, the two of them need to get it together. Especially Stastny.

I love Stazz, but I’m starting to wonder if he needs a kick in the butt too. Perhaps a healthy scratch? Probably won’t happen until Dutchy gets back though.

And where the frak is Jones? Is he only able to score when the Avs are in the basement? I know he got one last game, but other than that, where the heck has he been? We need more from him too. If he finds a way to start scoring a bit (or even just getting good chances), Sacco will play him.

by andidee15 on Jan 16, 2012 6:13 PM MST up reply actions

I don’t think we’re watching the same Stastny… he’s always getting chances, he got flat out robbed today on both of his chances. He’s always getting chances, he’s just not burying the goals.

The assists, I’m not too sure about… not having a finisher on his line hurts… but he’s a lot better than his numbers indicate.

Wow.

On one hand, I hate how skewed sports reporters coverage of a player can be when they aren’t sunshine and rainbows with the reporter.

Then again, it’s in Varlamov’s job description, and Chambers seems like an amiable fella who probably didn’t deserve to be treated rudely.

I understand why Varly didn’t want to talk, but I think I have to side with Chambers here. If you’re a professional athlete, the only way you can get out of doing interviews are if A) the coach/organization doesn’t approve it (like what happened with Bryz after the “lost in the woods” interview), or B) you’re crazy and superstitious and so good that people let you get away with it (Roy’s thing about speaking with reporters on game day – although I’m pretty sure he did post-game stuff).

Varly’s still learning, and Giggy stepped up to give comments instead. I think there will probably be words between the mentor and the student at some point about it though.

I get Chambers’ point of view. I really do. But the team totally screwed Varly in that game and what is Varly going to say? The truth? That he could’ve played better but the rest of the team needs to as well? It would be a reasonable response…from a guy with more experience and more confidence in his language abilities. I’d give him a break. I have very little doubt that it was less NBA and more lack of confidence. Yeah, he needs to figure out how to deal with losses and still talk to the media, but that’s the thing. With more experience, he’ll get there.

He seemed rather defeated by the end of the game. I’m sure he was extremely upset about it and that’s why he wouldn’t talk to Chambers, not that he was being rude and thinking he was too good for it. Another thing to keep in mind is that Varly never spoke to the press in DC in English. He spoke only through an interpreter and usually only after a big game, he was rarely expected to speak to them. They didn’t press him to speak after bad games, so he probably doesn’t have much experience doing it, and none at all in English.

I wasn’t directing my comment at you.

I guess the only thing I really disagree with you about is if it’s in Varly’s job description or not. Personally, if I’m Sacco or Sherman or Lacroix the Elder or Sakic or Billington or Lacroix the Younger or did I miss and exec but the point is I don’t really want Varly talking a lot to the media. He should have done like Alexi Gusarov did and plead the language barrier, but it’s too late for that.

Seems like the media is pretty compliant with what the Avs want. If I’m management, I send out the word that Varly’s off limits game days, before and after.

by DiD on Jan 16, 2012 10:22 PM MST up reply actions

I thought he went overboard in being critical. I doubt Varly would have said anything very interesting anyway (“I sucked”) so it’s not like he prevented Chambers from writing an article. I honestly thought I was reading a Dater piece instead of a Chambers piece. I don’t think a small quote by Varly really makes that much difference in the article for him to trash Varly like that.

I don’t like how reporters freak out because an athlete won’t talk to them, they don’t allow for the athlete to be upset or gather their thoughts. Mike Green was so distraught after the Caps lost to the Habs in the first round in 2010 that he didn’t talk to reporters on exit day. They absolutely trashed him for it all over the place. He apparently was very upset and waited a few days until he calmed down then he had a press conference with all the reporters and let them ask whatever they wanted and answered all their questions. I don’t think one of them wrote anything saying my bad, maybe he’s not a spoiled jerk athlete after all. Honestly, enough other players talk to them that Mike Green not talking for a few days wasn’t a big deal in my opinion. Green is a headcase though and actually saw a sports psychologist that summer. Goalies are weird creature. I imagine Varly will speak to Chambers tomorrow or the next time he sees him.

In my opinion ranting about it online is not professional. Sure, make a comment that “Varly didn’t want to answer questions” if you feel you must. But going on about it? However I wouldn’t have a problem if a leader on the team came out said somthing like yep we lost 6 to 1. I played like shit and the whole team played like shit except for rmaybe 2 guys. Every person on this team including coaches and front office need to take a long look in the mirror and decide if they want to be a playoff team or a basement team.

Was his name on the board? Did the Avalanche organization say reporters could talk to him? If not, Varly has the right to refuse interviews. These are people, not puppets. Their contracts say they have to talk to the press. I suspect they don’t say they have to talk to them whenever the reporters want to talk to them but instead when the organization says they need to talk with them.

I suspect neither of us know the answer to that. And again, frustration and the right to refuse doesn’t mean he has to be a jerk about it, as Chambers obviously feels he was.

Again, Chambers has been nothing short or professional since he’s covered the Avs. Not sure why his complaint is being completely dismissed as unprofessional.

Then again, I see Varly’s side too. Sometimes players don’t want to talk after games. Get that too. There’s 2 sides here.

Exactly. I have not seen/read anywhere anyone else saying it was rude. I think it’s an issue of Chambers not being used to Varly and took it as a personal slight.

Even if Varly was rude, I don’t think it was very professional to write a blog like that. He didn’t say anything to Chambers so it’s limited on how rude he could be non-verbally since he apparently waved and didn’t flip him the bird on his way out. Athletes act like jackasses all the time (not an excuse) but do you see sportswriters all over America writing about how they were so jerky to them? I feel like it’s making the reporter part of the story, and they aren’t the focus. It just comes across as whiny to me when I have seen those complaints in the past. I know they have a job to do, but to me the fact Varly wouldn’t talk to him wasn’t news. Also, writing something like that isn’t exactly going to encourage Varly to talk to him in the future. In my opinion, he should have handled it with the team PR guys and Varly instead of making it into a news story.

I just checked Japers which was a mistake, they are loving that blog post of course most of them hate Varly.

No, they just hold secret grudges and let it skew their coverage for the rest of the athlete’s career. I’d much rather have a reporter be up front and say “I was personally offended by this” than the passive aggressiveness that usually happens (like it seems like happened in Washington). Personally I’d talk to Varly in private if it was me, but it isn’t.

Except that’s not what Chambers did.

Part of why I love covering hockey full-time is because I don’t have to put up with the NFL and NBA locker-room crud, the huge egos and "I’m holier than thou" attitudes. Avs goalie Semyon Varlamov reminded me of that today, when he walked away and waved me off after I asked him for a quick interview.

This isn’t pro football or basketball, Varly…

Nah, he needs to be better

Chambers was a dick about it, IMO. Normally I really really like him. But he was way out of line on this one IMO.

I understand your point, but it seems like it’s more about the reporter’s ego and the reporter needs to get over it in my opinion. Obviously they don’t have to enjoy being treated poorly, but it’s their job to provide unbiased coverage. They don’t have to write nice fluff pieces about athletes that are arrogant jerks, but I think it’s wrong when they let their opinion of the athlete skew their coverage forever. This is something that has frustrated me for a long time.

When Sean Taylor was shot, a bunch of idiot sports reporters/columnists were all over it and said it had to do with his lifestyle and his history of incidents, including Wilbon and Kornheiser. Then it turned out the guy was innocently in his own home trying to protect his girlfriend and child when he was shot. Not many of those idiots bothered to apologize for using his death as an opportunity to write more bad crap about him before they even knew the truth.

Do Chambers & Dater get to speak to everyone that they want to after games? I thought that the teams only select a few players to talk to the press and the ones that don’t want to speak leave the room. Does Chambers always get pissed if one of the players he want to speak to is off-limits?

She’s right, though. The team selects the players who the reporters get to talk to. I learned that when applying for a job with the Mammoth. It’s totally set up by someone. Sure, reporters can ask for someone to interview, but to get all disgruntled when one wouldn’t? Bad on Chambers’ part IMO. This is probably the first time Chambers has ever experienced it because Avs players have always been so open to that part of the job. It sucks he’s taking it so personally and ripping Varly for it.

Yes, I gleaned this from the Caps, who are much more media friendly and have a lot of post game videos of media scrums and also from 24/7. They write the players numbers up on the board that have to talk to the press and let the others go (it was 5 guys or less usually I think). I guess some of the other players stick around and talk if they feel like it, because after some Caps games I have seen many players interviewed on videos, radio and in newspaper articles. Some players are always expected to speak, like Ovi as captain.

Ok, hold on there. All you have is Chambers’ impersonation of what happened. He took it as a slight. Perhaps it wasn’t the way Chambers interpreted it. Perhaps Varly waved him off in an “I’m upset, I can’t talk now” kind of way, not a “go to hell” kind of way. There’s no proof it was uncivil, only Chambers’ opinion of the interaction.

I agree with you, there didn’t seem to be enough evidence presented by Chambers to conclude Varly was being arrogant and dismissive versus too upset to talk in English after a bad performance. Honestly I would be more concerned about him getting his mental state right so he can play well than making nice with the press. He shouldn’t be rude to them but it’s a lower priority to me.

Those guys have been speaking to the press for years, they are trained in hockey player speak to reveal nothing of importance. Varly wasn’t trained that way, he needs time to learn it. I read a google translate of a Russian interview he did early in the season (I posted it here) after a bad loss against the Stars, and he was pretty harsh on himself. I am sure he probably knows better than to reveal so much to the press here. I’ve noticed that other Russians tend to be much more forthcoming in Russian interviews versus in English.

I’m not sure sure why I’m being anti-Varly here, all I said is that it’s uncalled for for Varly to be rude. I see both sides of this issue

And we frankly have no idea what the Avs policy is, or common, practice for making players available. It seems as if Chambers thought he was following normal protocol, and it’s not like Chambers has a history of antagonism with athletes.

Never said you were anti-Varly. Said you don’t know how the interaction actually went down. You just know Chambers’ interpretation of it. He may not have a history of antagonism but he also may not have a history of working with young goaltenders who are lacking confidence and are not comfortable with English.

Let’s be honest here. If Roy told Chambers to fuck off, it would be written off as “That’s Patrick.” Of course Roy was more accomplished than Varly but the principle is the same.

Here is my take

After a bad test, I hate talking to anyone and if I do I am really short and direct which offends people. Varley was hung out to dry on the first two goals. Bad turnover by Hejda at blue lines is constant and is costing games. Then when the 3rd goal that got deflected by him and then beaten by another uncovered guy. That wrap around goal was a goal given by a guy that didn’t care anymore. He was probably disappointed in himself and with his team. Respect the player, if it would have been Roy it would have been a VCR thrown at him. Still, Varley, once calm should go talk to Chambers and let him know it was not personal.

Chambers I think was more offensive. There was no need to roast a guy because he had a bad outing. It is not like Varley told him to go fuck himself or anything. Just gave a nod and left. The guy got torched by 6 goals. 10 goals in the last 2 games. Personally, I am glad he is pissed. He needs to be pissed. He needs to be better. I hope he listens to Jiggy. What I fear is that Varley will start pulling this action he did in Washington, the “I am number 1 and if I am not then I am gone”.

I wouldn’t worry about Varly pulling that. The only evidence he pulled that was McPhee and Leonsis, who have an agenda to make the Caps look good. Slava Malamud said Varly never insisted on being named #1 to stay or demanded a huge sum of money. Varly wouldn’t talk about it but my personal opinion is that it was related to Boudreau’s mishandling of goalies, something with the medical staff, and probably somewhat the existence of Neuvy and Holtby. He really thought after the 2011 playoffs when he didn’t get to play at all despite Neuvy sucking it up against Tampa that the team had lost confidence in him and moved on. That might not have been accurate but it he felt that way from an interview given to Slava Malamud on exit day.

Varly has consistently said only good things Caps the Caps organization, even after McPhee trashed him and Leonsis trashed him on his blog and would only refer to him as “the player” just like Bill Parcells with T.O. No way Varly comes close to being a T.O.

Agreed, I hope Varly fired that guy but I doubt we will ever know. Also, some KHL team paid Varly’s dad some money to convince Varly to sign in the KHL. It was a week away from July 1 and Varly had a deal hammered out with the Caps and all that was left was to actually sign when he went mysteriously silent after his dad took the bribe and then a week later on July 1 he refused to sign.

Few points

1) What a team loss. Good news is that SOB didn’t have to wait long to get back in the game. Quincy is probably thinking “What a lucky bastard”

2) The Avs win and lose by Defense. Today, the defense was horrible. Hejda had a horrible game, Wilson was all over the ice as long as the puck was not within 20 feet of him. ROB didn’t have a bad game per say but holy hell he is slow, and what a defensive liability. I can’t really think of anything Johnson and Quincy did, nor Elliot. It will be interesting to see who sits and who plays next game. It might not hurt Hejda to sit a game and watch the play from a different angle, or give Wilson a bit more time to recover or have ROB sit. Who knows, the only ones that I think is safe is Quincy and EJ.

3) Hartly said the best players needs to be the best players. Our actual best players are Duchene, SOS, Duke, EJ and Jones. However our best are Radar, Landy and EJ. Duchene is injured so he gets a pass. SOS is turning things around slowly, the Duke has been awful the past few games, and EJ has been really solid the last few games. Andie had a good write up about this.

4) Mules is looking really good. Just a bit off and we have not seen that boom-boom shot yet. I would like to see Jones with Landy and Radar. If Jones does not show up it is alright because they are use to that, but I think Jones is better suited for that line then Hejduk, crash and dirty goals. I would like to see Mules with SOS and Duke. That is more set up for sniping and play set up. Can we see this next game.

First time in awhile I can’t really pin anything down here. Not being sarcastic at all, just can’t point to a turning point or a trend.

We started on time. We had some excellent scoring chances. Varly made some terrific saves. I guess that’s the good part.

We couldn’t bury our chances. Koby and McClement picked up 2 of our 3 points. Made some defensive mistakes – Hejda’s been really good for awhile, but that was a bad pinch. I thought Quincey was pretty poor before I saw his minus 3. Elliott…well, that was all said and done by the time he gave up the puck.

I’m just gonna shake this one off. It’s an 82 game season. I don’t think there’s a bag skate coming, or anything like that. Might shake up a few of the bottom 6 guys, but what choice do we really have?

Phoenix played well. Tippett is amazing. The Coyotes have the best unis in the league.

Today I saw this adorable pic of Varly with some Team Russia teammates with their silver medals from the 2007 WJC

Then I realized that this pic is actually quite sad. Those 6 guys are all from Lokomotiv. Artem Anisimov and Varly are the only ones still alive. The other guys who died in the plane crash are: Alexander Vasyunov, Kiryukhin, Churilov, and Anikeenko. I don’t know which guy is which though other than Varly. I think Anisimov is the guy on the far left, and I think Alexander Vasyunov is second from the left. He was good friends with Anisimov and Varly, and he was a draft pick by the Devils and played on their AHL team for 3 years, and played in some NHL games last season.

Here’s a review of Varly’s performance in that tourney:

Varlamov represented Russia at the WJC U-20 tournament and was the second-best goalie at the tournament behind Canada’s Carey Price. Varlamov allowed 9 goals on 136 shots (1.51 GAA) and was 5-1 with 2 shutouts as Russia reached the gold medal game before falling to Canada, 4-2. Varlamov was selected one of Russia’s three best players for the tournament.

I actually started cleaning windows well the third period was going on. That is how great that game was, a guy would rather clean then pay attention.

Neutral Zone

I only was able to watch the game in the late second and third periods but the one thing that jumped out at me is how awful the avs neutral zone play was.

One of the basic principles of neutral zone play (when you have the puck) is to try and make the “long” (diagonal) east west pass from the defensemen to the forward. If you can connect on this pass it allows the forward to have time and space moving into the offensive zone. The avs allowed Phoenix to hit on these passes consistently and the Coyotes moved into the zone with speed and space often.

To counteract this the forwards need to fill their lanes more effectively with active sticks and bodies and the far side defenseman needs to tighten his gap significantly to close off the pass. If they can force the opposition up the strong side I think they will be much more successful in forcing a dump and chase tactic from the opponent instead of the “oh hey, i have like 30 feet of open ice and 3 buddies!” style that was prevalent on monday.

I am sure the coaching staff saw this and hopefully the avs will rectify this tomorrow against the cats
