Brandon Yip claimed off waivers by Nashville Predators
Someone out there thinks that Brandon Yip still has it in him. According to The Tenneseean (and confirmed by NHL.com), Yip was claimed off of waivers today. The Preds have also activated forward Jerred Smithson who was on injured reserve. The Predators play their next game tonight at 7:00 pm ET against division rival Columbus Blue Jackets. No word yet on whether or not Yip will suit up.
As disappointing as he has been, it's sad to see the Yipper go. We wish him luck in his new gig; however, he can go back to his 0-point self on March 8 and April 7. Just sayin.
Stick tap to 9601 and Justin Digby of Monsters Mashup for the heads up on this one.

Sad to see you go Yip. Hopefully Smashville can put the boot up your ass of which you are in such dire need.
Please apply yourself and be awesome (for an 8th rounder anyways). Just remember to go back to your floating, penalty taking ways four times a year, ’kay?

Is Svatos in Nashville? I haven’t heard his name in a long time. According to nhl.com, his last games were played last season for Ottawa

Svatos was waived a year ago to make room for Mike Fisher. After, of course, the Preds went to the trouble of stealing him on re-entry waivers from the Blues. Good times. Good times.

I really think this number should be retired. It’s only brought problems (or trades) for the last four players who’ve worn it, save for Stephane Yelle during his second stint with the Avs.

Super sniper in NHL standards? or Nashville Joel Ward standards?
Paul Stastny did, what Paul Stastny does. Score big goals.
IF they get Joel Ward production out of him, I’d be surprised.
If we don't get our sauce, we ain't watching the game!
I had the same thought regarding Trotz- if Yip has any potential in the NHL, Trotz is one of the coaches that could get him to play to his ability. Of course it would be nice if the Avs had a coach like that.

My take: I watch a ton of Preds games due to the Mrs. and Nashville will always take fliers on guys who show offensive upside because they haven’t developed much of their own in recent years. He’ll have to be responsible defensively in Nashville because that’s the culture. I don’t think he’s a hard enough worker on-ice (to say nothing of off) that he will mesh with the wingers/centers that Nashville has now.
Not a good fit for him IMO. He would have been better suited getting 2nd/3rd line minutes for a struggling East team like Montreal, Tampa, Carolina, or the Isles.
If we don't get our sauce, we ain't watching the game!
Anyone would be better off in the East. Have you seen the point spread out there? Avs would be solidly in a playoff spot if they were Easterners. Hell, with the way they play against the East, they’d be Pres Trophy candidates!

What's really important here
With the waiving of Yip the Avs are now $1.316M above the cap floor (down from $2.06M). Lindstrom’s salary is included on Cap Geek though, does that still count against the Cap?
Here’s why that’s important: Matt Hunwick ($1.5M) cannot be traded away without getting salary in return or the Avs are below the cap. (although any AHLer they call up to fill his roster spot will likely cover it)
Maybe

uh, maybe my sarcasm detector is broken, but the Avs are well over the floor. The could waive Stastny today and probably still be over

Unless I’m reading CapGeek wrong, their cap hit is now 49.6 and the Floor is 48.3 (and the Avs cap hit is worse if Lindstrom isn’t really there)

during the offseason you can use that as a good basis point, but once the season starts, you have to go with the daily stuff because of all the extra players the team ends up carrying during injuries

So they’ve been playing cap games all season just so they can eventually unload Stastny for nothing?

Also why I think the idea of us trading Stastny is ridiculous, because we have to get a ton of salary in return.
What if the ton of Salary is Parise.

You gonna put Dutchy back at Center and hope learns to play two-way hockey?
If we don't get our sauce, we ain't watching the game!
There are a lot of things going on here. If the trade for Parise was straight up with Stastny and Parise would be signed long term ( I know a big if), I would consider this. I have been an arch-opponent of trading Stastny, but that would make me stop and think.
A man who stole my whisky used the defense that no one could resist a bottle of Scotch. I had no choice but to testify on his behalf.
For me, one of the big attractions of Parise is paring him up with Stastny. They were good together in the Vancouver Olympics. Put Parise on Stats wing and I think Stats scoring problems are behind him. Oh, and Parise breaks the 100 point barrier.
Not going to happen, but you can dream.

Parise makes less than Stastny but I think it could still work. But assuming we’d have to add a roster player or two, we’d be under the floor.
It was hypothetical.
A man who stole my whisky used the defense that no one could resist a bottle of Scotch. I had no choice but to testify on his behalf.
I know. The real problem is that he’s a rental, and we’re barely in a playoff spot. If there was some way we’d be guaranteed to get him long term I’d do it, but otherwise… not worth the price we’d have to pay.
I thought Salary cap was pro rated, so if hunwick (1.5M) was traded exactly half way through the season, 750000 of that stays on our cap because it is what we paid.
I'm not questioning your powers of observation; I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.
