Midseason Avalanche Injury Update

The Avs had TERRIBLE luck with injuries in December. Coming into the month, we had lost 44 man-games to injury. We've managed to drop 61 since (including the 3 today). There was one point where we had 7 players out of the lineup, and that's not even including Porter's suspension. However, the Avs just set a team record 10 wins in December. With any luck, the wins will carry into January, but the injuries won't.

The chart includes tonight's game (#41) and marks where the Avs stand at the midpoint of the 2011-12 season.

***Table does not include totals from players that have not played with the club this year (Olver, Rissmiller, etc.)***

(TCD = Training Camp Day, PSG = Preseason Game, RS MGL = Regular Season Man-Game Lost)

1 man-game is equal to one player missing one game. So if 3 players miss one game, the team incurs 3 man-games lost that night.

# Name Injury Cause Injury Date Injury Game # Opponent Return Date RS MGL
44 Wilson Hand Blocked Shot 19-Sep TCD 3 8-Oct 0
8 Hejda Knee Unknown 20-Sep TCD 4 B & W 8-Oct 0
18 Yip Broken Arm Blocked Shot 23-Sep PSG 2 Blues 17-Nov 18
88 Mueller Head Post Concussion 12-Oct 3 Jackets - 38
6 Johnson Groin Bag Skate 20-Nov 21 Sharks 4-Dec 5
17 Kobasew Leg Unknown 2-Dec 26 Blues 6-Dec 1
26 Stastny Torso Hit 4-Dec 27 Wings 13-Dec 3
44 Wilson Head Hit 6-Dec 28 Canucks - 12
17 Kobasew Head Hit 9-Dec 30 Oilers 29-Dec 8
18 Yip Groin Unknown 9-Dec 30 Oilers 21-Dec 4
54 Jones Groin Unknown 13-Dec 31 Sharks 31-Dec 8

27 Quincey Groin Unknown 15-Dec 32 Sharks 21-Dec 2
9 Duchene Knee Twisted during Hit 29-Dec 39 Coyotes - 2
Total: 105

This means we are on pace for 210 MLG to injury, which is down 264 from the whopping 474 we experienced last year. And speaking of last year, here are some Avs injury facts about 2011:

Games Played MGL # of Injured Players/GP
Spring 2011 44 280 6.4
Fall 2011 40 102 2.6
All of 2011 84 382 4.6

And if you're intrested in a further breakdown:

*knocks on wood*

I know. And realistically, I do expect our MGL/GP to go up as the season wears on because 82 games in 6.5 months is pretty grueling. Injuries are going to happen. However, I just hope that we manage to keep it below the rate we did last year. If we can keep it at around 4 or so without letting it slip into the 5+ per game range, we should be alright. {knocks on wood again}

The number doesn’t really matter as much as the quality of the player that is injured. In this situation, it’s quality over quantity.

I'm not questioning your powers of observation; I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.

That’s true. If you’re interested in a bit more in-depth look into that, I’d suggest checking out this blog. He looks at cap hit and TOI in relation to MGL for all the teams each month. It’s very interesting stuff. The December ‘11 breakdown should be up soon. He also has a 3 year breakdown of teams, and his MGL numbers seem to be pretty close to the NHL totals. Let’s just say the Avs have not fared well in that time.

I’d been wondering about man-TOI lost for a while… thanks!

At exactly what point do you start to realize that life without knowledge is death in disguise?

I was psyched when I found that site. Glad I’m not the only one.

Great find, thank you, I’d heard about this but hadn’t checked it out yet.

This information makes Sacco’s coaching job here even more impressive.

no Olver :(

A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.

Nice work! Don’t mean to nitpick but can we really count varly as losing those games to injury since he was on the bench as the backup? I know he was hurt but he also was available.

Anyhow amazing how much time avs players missed last year and keep up the good work.
