I can understand refs calling stuff to their descretion because face it, they fucking suck… but I was always under the belief that they will always call a penalty it leads directly to a scoring chance for the team that just committed the infraction or takes away from a legit scoring chance… Yet the Kings got away with a bunch of hem.

The Gali “roughing” and the missed call on Brown stick to Gali’s face was the not something that should have happened

unacceptable. There is no reason why one team should be constrained by overly vigilant refereeing while the other team is permitted to hook, hold, and rough their way to the buzzer.
I don’t think that the Avs deserve the win or even a single point tonight. That does not excuse the terrible calls tonight. I’m generally pretty fair… I understand that they can’t get every call. I notice when the Avs get favourable calls as well. This has been unbelievably lopsided all night, though.

But Nash is 27. All the annoying stats types say that is when scorers start going down hill. I’ve had to read a lot of that junk because of Ovi/Semin. So maybe better to keep the 20 year old?
This is also the reason when Ovi was sucking it up earlier this season I told my friend I wanted to trade him for Duchene and Varly. She is more logical than me and actually agreed because Duchene is younger. Just picture Duchene and Backstrom on a line together….

Ok I’m too tired to interpret your meaning. It’s 2 am and I should probably go to bed. But I will say Nicky Backstrom is a stud and MVP of the Caps so far this season, but no one barely notices him because of Ovi. I voted for him for all star game and I hope he makes it. Actually won’t mind if Ovi doesn’t go but Nicky deserves to finally go. He had a 100 point season back in 2009-10 and didn’t even make it that season. He’s the Caps leading scorer so far.
Backstrom is awesome
I mean, those guys are elite talents on their own, together they should be omg amazing. Not sure what’s going on there this year. I think Duchene would just be a downgrade from what you already have :(

Have you watched Ovi this season? He’s sucked until recently, finally he is starting to score some goals. He would float around listlessly and not play much D and not look like he was enjoying himself anymore or even trying that hard. Hopefully he’s on a good track now. Ovi has 31 points and Duchene has 24. In my defense, I said this in the Ovi floating around listlessly stage, I think that was before Boudreau was canned. Hunter seems to have re-energized Ovi and Semin.
I think he didn’t make it in 09-10 because that was olympics year
THE COLORADO AVALANCHE HAVE WON THE STANLEY CUP. RAYMOND BOURQUE: A DREAM COME TRUE!
hmm good point. 2009-10 was a crazy good year for all the Caps players, they all reached career highs, sadly probably never to be repeated because they are getting a little older now (other than Nicky who is just 24). Semin had 40 goals, Ovi had 50, Backstrom had 33, Green had 19 goals. The last good year for all the young guns. Sadly the Caps didn’t do anything in the playoffs that season and fell apart against Montreal. I kind of think it’s all downhill for them from that season, it was their best shot at winning something.
NHL is a brutal place
Miss your window, it’s gg. If the Blackhawks hadn’t won the Cup when they did, hoo boy.

This is just extremely blatant homerism, right? If it is, I’m cool with it. I just don’t want to believe a bunch of MHH people seriously think Rick Nash is less valuable than Ryan O’Reilly.

I was actually comparing O’Reilly to Brooks Laich. Both good defensive centers, extremely hard workers and crazy workout freaks. O’Reilly has the edge over Laich because he doesn’t give really annoying fake boy scout quotes all the time. For example, this summer while Laich was shopping around for a team, he was like “I just want to play hockey”. No Laich, you just want to be PAID BANK to play hockey.
ya
I know a bit about Laich. I’m a big fan of his. Also lol’d at that quote pretty hard when it came out. I’d be happy if Radar topped out at Laich. Not sure he’ll quite get there but it’s possible.

Well it’s possible, Laich’s highest points total is 59 points on the insanely good 2009-10 Caps team, highest goals was 25 that same season, so he’ll probably never repeat that again. Especially not now that he plays 3C on a checking line instead of 2L with Semin. I think Laich actually got a few Selke votes last season.
Yeah
I’d be totally 100% fine with a Laich-like career. You don’t win cups without those guys on your team.

Nash is a known quantity. O’Reilly isn’t. Keeping O’Reilly is a risk, but with his work ethic, I can’t figure out how good he’ll be. If he keeps this up, he possibly may become as good as Nash in a few years, but with tons a defense too. I just can’t tell. But if I were Sherman, I wouldn’t be looking to trade him unless there was an absolute king’s ransom coming back the other way.

Rarity? No I think if OReilly stays on this path he’s clearly the rarer player. I mean he’s leading the league in takeaways. Nash is a pure sniper, there are a select few of those yes, but I think 2 way guys who are ACTUALLY strong offensively are rarer. Thats not to say I wouldnt make the trade, but I do think its a close one. Tough to say with OReilly still so young

I mean he’s leading the league in takeaways.
I really can’t accurately express how much I hate that statistic. There’s no consistency in how the stat is tracked so why do people continue to put so much weight on it? Yes, he’s on path to being an elite defensive center but his breakout campaign right now is still on pace for a sub-60 point season. He’s no doubt going to be an impact player in the NHL for a long time but everyone’s favorite comp, Bergeron, has never approached the same value as a guy like Rick Nash haha.

Fair enough. Never disagreed that Nash is more or less valuable than OReilly, I just think that OReilly has a very unique and rare skillset. I still think that two-way ability is harder to find than pure scoring. Not more or less valuable. I’m only addressing your point as to rarity

Ok who are the best two way players in the league, just to get at the rarity of them? I am pretty tired so all I can think of right now is Toews. Someone else please help me out. Backstrom is normally a good defensive player in addition to his offense but not so much this season (but maybe that is partially due to Ovi?). I don’t pay enough attention to other teams to add to the list.
Toews, Datsyuk, Kesler and Jordan Staal come to mind

I thought of Staal but I wasn’t sure if he’d done enough offensively. His max points is 49 two seasons in a row.
Exactly....

I still think there are more O'Reilly's
He just got started sooner than most because he was drafted by the right team at the right time. Nash has been a top 5 NHL player in the wasteland that is Columbus pretty much the entire time.

This is totally irrational and you can shun my hockey senses if you want… But I just get the feeling like Nash in Columbus may be an anomaly? Like Best EVAR Kovalchuk in Atlanta. I just wonder if maybe he only looks so good surrounded by shit. I’ve never been all too impressed with his chemistry, though of course he’s never had real talented guys to work with until Carter, who’s a whole boatload of problems on his own. I don’t know, I just have huge reservations about selling the farm for a guy with so little experience winning and only 4 games of playoffs on his career. It feels a lot like Kovalchuk to me, and as good as he is, I wonder how they REALLY feel about that 15 year deal

Kovy I understand the reservations
I was always really hesitant to give him that kind of money. Even if he’s fallen off the outrageous pace he was on, he could still be in the middle of a 600 goal career. Nash is a completely different type of player. He melts faces and plays defense and goes after it every night. I would have zero reservations about Rick Nash come playoff time. Absolutely none whatsoever.

by avalanchejef on Jan 2, 2012 11:47 PM MST up reply actions
Long way to go. And I wasn’t the one that said it.
But I have no idea what O’Reilly’s potential is. None. He could be playing above himself right now, or he could be a HOFer in the making. I just don’t know. So even though it’s early for the Sakic comparisons, could he get there? It’s a bit unlikely (Sakic was one of the absolute best) but hell, anything seems possible with that kid and his work ethic.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves (not just andi)
I love Radar as much as the rest of you and he’ll be my first unipron when I stop being poor…. BUT! this ridiculous break-out year is what, a 50 point pace?
At exactly what point do you start to realize that life without knowledge is death in disguise?
Which is a bunch more than I expected. That above post came out much more optimistic than I actually feel. O’Reilly’s a long shot at being a HOF. LONG shot. But I honestly can’t make any sort of a prediction on what his ceiling is because he just keeps breaking it. And he’s YOUNG – players don’t usually hit their peak until their mid-20s. I don’t know where he’s going to end up. Its a huge spectrum, but I do think he’ll be a good player for us for a lot of years.
And I don’t think he’s all that Sakicesque – different game style. Still, to be able to pull of a Sakicesque goal is impressive, and I look forward to seeing where he ends up.

Oh hey, learned something new
apparently the extra goal awarded to a team in a shootout counts towards their goal differential. That’s kind of misleading, isn’t it?

hell yeah it's awesome
and it’s bad ass to look at the last 11 games and say “sup, NHL?”. These next two weeks are soso big, playing teams that are all ahead of us in the standings. We continue this momentum and we put ourselves in very good position for the stretch run. We have a bad run and things could get very ugly very quickly

Dater's write-up for DPo
The Avs didn’t get a power play until 8:48 of the third, when Kyle Quincey was kneed by Kyle Clifford. But the Colorado PP was sluggish, perhaps from being out of practice all night.
Hahahahahahaha

Now the game is over i can say this, Avs PK is good because of the amount of practice. Avs PP streaky, because lack of practice.
