that’s a darn good question….. I’d have to go with the latter. I think teams are hypersensitive about it right now and are sitting guys rather than brushing it under the rug the way it used to be. And I think players feel like it’s ok to report concussion symptoms now too, rather than being as ostracized they way they have been in the past.
There were a ton last year too, but I definitely think the number reported has gone up in recent years. They’re taking it more seriously, and, as someone who’s had a couple of concussions (playing soccer), I’m pretty glad that they’re realizing how dangerous it can be.
that’s interesting. I’ve never played much soccer, are concussions common? I though i’d read something about kids and concussions from heading the soccer ball, but I’m not sure.
I think that is an interesting counter point to the theory going around that the hardened shoulder and elbow pads are responsible for the increase in concussions.
I’m really not sure how common they are. I know I’ve read articles about how heading the ball is causing damage to kids, but I’ve never looked into statistics or anything. I know a teammate of mine got a minor one from heading the ball, but lied about it to get back in the game.
My bad one was actually from going up for a header and getting elbowed in the back of the head by the guy behind me, who was about a head taller than me. Had post-concussion for a couple months afterwards.

Well they mentioned Quick and his b-day and that was about it. Not missing much, but GCL usually cuts out most of the pregame stuff.
I’ve managed to watch about 30 seconds of NBA hoops. So far, I’ve seen 9 people standing around like idiots staring at the one guy with the ball and playing “defense” by standing up straight with their hands below their waist.
What an absolute joke. That’s not basketball, it’s a lot of really tall guys making more money than I probably will in my lifetime by being lazy slugs.

really? weak? I wouldn’t say it’s Hossa style (who for the record, I believe has the quickest release in all of the NHL) but it isn’t weak. If anything it’s above average. Landy’s is weak.

I think his “taking nights off” thing is from back in the yotes days. He never did it with us and his injuries and being moved seem to make him appreciate being in the NHL more. If we add a forward at the deadline and Duch comes back we will really be able to roll 4 lines if the Muell keeps this up.
You know, adding Dutch, I’m not sure we need to make a big trade at deadline. A bit more depth would be nice, but:
Dutch – Stazz – Ferris
Landy – Radar – Duke
Gali – McC – Winnik
Cody Mac – VDG – Jones
is a pretty nice lineup. Except for maybe Jones not being in the Top 6.

I’m not sure we’ll add guys. With the way things are clicking, especially with Mueller, I think Sherman may hold tight. If we get Duchene back in a bit, we’ll be set.

Actually if we add a winger they can give Duchene his own line.. It would be like adding an entire new scoring line to your team.
That could be good, but our bottom 6 are really clicking right now. And who would be give up to get said winger?

But I’m not sure about the 2nd. It would have to be a 2013 second or we’d have to make another trade. I just don’t like the idea of having our first pick in the 3rd round, even if it is a deep draft.

I would rather write off this draft than not make the playoffs this year. I think the experience is more valuable than our 2nd rounder.
Donno if this is what your talking about but.. If the caps pick this years 2nd they get Boston’s 2nd. We still have our 2nd rounder this year regardless.
I know, but if we trade our 2nd for Ruutu + Gleason, then we don’t have a first or a second.
I just don’t want us to ignore drafting in hopes of making the playoffs. That’s what got us into this whole mess in the first place. Besides, with our still weak forward prospect depth, I don’t think we’re to the point where we can afford to even think about doing that. Maybe in 3-5 years when we’re a major contender trying for the Cup that might work, but just to make playoffs in a year we have 0% chance of making a legit run?

I just think we are closer than that depending on what this off season brings as far as free agency. We could contend next year but no one seems to think that’s possible.
Add Parise to our lineup and tell me we don’t have a lineup that could compete deep into the playoffs.
Chicago made the playoffs a couple years before singing Hossa and then really making a run. We are in the same position with our core I think. If we get lucky enough to pickup a big FA we could follow in that mold just as easily with more center depth than them. Especially if Johnson continues to develop like he has seemed to this year.
minor thing, hossa didn’t really have much of an affect on their cup run ’(although he did help defensively).

He completed their team.. He added a threatening player to cover and gave them the ability to roll lines as needed based on who was producing. That is depth.. Which is also what we could have if we keep all three of our top flight centers and add the wingers we need.
It gives Sacco more options with match ups and allows us to have more energy going into the Playoffs.
There are not very many teams out there that can shut down a team with 3 really dangerous lines. Which is why teams like Van.. Philly.. and Boston are so hard to play against because even if you shut down what on paper looks like their two best lines there is a 3rd that scores on you and a 4th than grinds you into the ice..
Add Parise in the off Season and you get
Gliardi – Stastny – Parise
Ruutu – Duchene – Mueller
Lando – O’R – Hejduk
EJ – GL
Q – Wil
Elliot – O’B
Still have depth at D and maybe a NHL ready forward for depth in Hishon

I lobbied hard that McCleod was innocent in that hit, and I’d say this was even less deserving of a penalty. You can see Nikitin’s right skate catch, his knee buckle….. Zetterberg did absolutely nothing wrong here.
