Game 50 Recap: Avs dominate, Ducks win 3-2
Avs came out strong and drew a penalty. Barely set up before a bad turnover resulted in a breakaway for Bobby Ryan. Short-handed goal.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Power play goal by Ryan Getzlaf off the rebound of a Teemu Selanne wrap around bid.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Getzlaf caught the Avs on a change and sent a pass up to a breaking Ryan, score.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Last five minutes, Avs turn it on, get goals by Ryan O'Reilly and Milan Hejduk, but can't get that last one to send the game to OT.
Seriously, this game was sleep-inducing until the last five. Avs outplayed the Ducks in every area except scoring goals and taking advantage of opportunities. Not too upset about this one. The Ducks are on a huMANgous hot streak right now, and the Avs did almost everything right. It sometimes happens when the lesser team gets the win (see Avalanche, 2009-2010 season).
- 1 J.S. Giguere - saved the boys' bacon at key moments
- 2 Ryan O'Reilly - scored the Avs' first goal and won 59% of his face offs
- 3 Milan Hejduk - slick hands, man. Slick hands.
- 1a Landeskog - O'Reilly - Hejduk
- 1b Galiardi - Stastny - Mueller
- 3 Winnik - McClement - Jones
- 4 McLeod - van der Gulik - Kobasew
- 1 Avs outshot Ducks 45-18
- 2 VDG had team high 4 hits
- 3 McClement won 6 of 8 face offs for 75% win rate
There's one more game before the All Star break, and it's on Tuesday at the Pepsi Center against the Wild.

Played well...
…but our detail to the game sucked. Turnovers, bad line change, etc.
45-18 shots!
We could have used Dutchy to try to tie up the score, hope he gets back, soon.
...holy freaking f*ck, snakes!
I’d take Giguere off that top 3, along with Hejduk…
Stastny/Mueller were much better, and Landeskog set up both goals.
Paul Stastny did, what Paul Stastny does. Score big goals.
Truth?
I phased out most of the game because it was so boring. I will take your word for it.

Breakaways are defense 100%. You should thank Giggy for at least keeping the score 3-0 and not letting in the 3rd breakaway. Anyone who’s played either defense and/or goalie should know the above. And if you don’t you’re not playing defense correctly.
Yup...

Tony, man
You’re embarrassing yourself. Stop being so sour about this. And just for the record, I think more often than not when a goalie is scored on with defensemen nearby, its more the goalies fault (not always), but when a goalie is scored on 1v1, the onus is on the shooter to score/miss, the goalie is just trying his best to match his movement and make one save. When you said “goalies are not responsible for goals” obviously a troll statement, why are you even here man? We’re all friends here, we don’t need you attacking us.

Why you heff to be mad?
Just a Colorado girl in Montana who ♥s the Avs and writes for Mile High Hockey.
Never played goalie, do play defense. I feel awful everytime the other teams gets a breakaway, goal or no goal, I always apologize to the goalie.
On the other hand every goalie I have played with says it is there job to stop every single shot regardless of the situation.
Avalanche Hockey: egressing to the mean
Historically, NHL goalies are about 50-50% on penalty shots and shootout attempts when looked at over a significant period of time. Giggy was one-for-three and one of those was five-hole on a weird half-BF attempt. He’d like it back, just like the other two. His rage after the third goal was palpable. Unfortunately, it was the difference in this game. It’s a tiny microcosm of the season though, so let’s move one.
Goalies have to stop every puck. It’s their job and the good ones will tell you that and won’t make excuses.
If we don't get our sauce, we ain't watching the game!
Totally serious about that, by the way, thought it was a great game to watch. I enjoy watching us put up a ton of shots. Enjoyed watching some big hits, including VDG on Parros. Enjoyed the comeback, enjoyed the big saves by Jiggy, hell, I even enjoyed the ridiculous pass from Getzlaf to Ryan.
I know we got Corsi’d real hard in a recent win, can’t remember which one. This is the Corsi-est Corsi-ing I’ve ever seen us give an opponent.

I don’t really understand the boring comments either. This game was hardly the neutral zone slogfest we see with Phoenix or Minnesota. The Avs were working hard, but there comes a time when you need a bounce or someone with real talent to make a play. If the Avs don’t have those few defensive lapses where they give up the breakaways, it’s a totally different story and I doubt anyone falls asleep.

didnt think oreilly was at his best today despite the goal. This team need Duchene back in a bad way. Most of the shots were from the exterior. How in the world do you let Bobby frickin Ryan on that break away in the 3rd. I could see losing Parros on the ice but Ryan is kind of good..

it was in then it hit his stick and he pulled it back into him, but it was def a goal.

Well, this stinks.
We played pretty darn well tonight and just couldn’t come away with the win. The last two goals were beauties and the final push was exciting, but it just wasn’t enough. We should have had at least a point tonight, but it didn’t happen. Oh well I suppose. Games like this happen. Our errors were fairly minor, but the Ducks capitalized. Giggy had a decent game and made some critical saves, but he certainly didn’t win this for us. Still, a lot of things went right tonight. It’s a disappointing loss, but not a bad one by any means.
Hopefully we can play this well with a bit more goalie solving aganst the Wild on Tuesday. That game is a must-win. Why, you ask? Not because of the standings (although a win over them would be HUGE), but because I live with a Wilds fan and am in a semester-long group project with another one. Since I don’t want to be teased about it, that game is a MUST.WIN.
And it looks like O’Reilly didn’t have his best game despite his goal. I wonder if he’s going through a rough patch or if the rest of the league is starting to pay attention to him? We need Duchene back if nothing else just to take some of the focus off Radar. Mueller hasn’t hit mainstream yet (and hopefully won’t for a while), but putting Mr. Razzle Dazzle back on the ice should help distract other teams from our leading scorer.
Hejduk Goal Watch: -8 goals and 32 games to hit 20-Goal Season #12.

I posted the moser link, love him. I thought Jiggy had a good game, 2 of the goals on breakaways, and he saved a third that kept us in the game. Can’t blame him for breakaway goals, they were good shots. I think the Stastny line is firing on all cylanders because ppl are shutting down the Radar line, just my opinion though. I don’t feel like doing research to see who top pairs are against, by my guess is Radar’s line.

What this says about our team
The Ducks have been blowing out their opponents as of late. We lost by one goal, and had it not been for a post, we would have tied it up. This is one of the hottest teams in the West and the NHL and we almost got a point out of it. Great effort, the bounces just weren’t going our way.
I'm not questioning your powers of observation; I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.
And the goals scored against us? 2 breakaways with sick shots that Giggy had very little chance on and a fluky, fluky goal that he almost saved.
Again, I’m not worried. Losing those two points may haunt us, but if we keep playing like we did tonight, we won’t need them since we’ll have a playoff spot locked up. Really good game, really bad outcome.

Talk about bad attendance
I was at the game on new years eve too and the attendance at the Honda Center was just terrible probably half full if that but I thought OK its New Years Eve. But tonight the attendance was even worse. Ducks fans should be ashamed, at least they were all pretty cool. With about 8 minutes left in the 3rd when we were down 3-0 me and my buddy went into the hall way to see I we could find the football game on and there was a group of Avs fans all watching the game, thought it was pretty funny.

How is this even close to coming back on me? I stated an opinion before the game, and I stated an opinion after the game and all I get is Shotgun bouncing around like a 4 year old telling me I’m wrong. He make a statement claiming I said something I never said, and this is somehow my fault? Can I make up things he said? Just for fun?

I’m usually one to say your opinion is yours, but saying it’s on the goalie to save a breakaway when it shouldn’t be there in the first place is just ridiculous. You can’t expect a goalie to save a break away, if he does, it’s bailing out the team, if he doesn’t it’s the defenses fault (unless he get’s beat horribly bad, and even then it’s close).

With all due respect
As a goalie (and a goalie coach), I can honestly say that he should save every shot. It’s his job description. Are some shots harder than others to save? Sure. Doesn’t change the job. That being said, it’s one of JSG’s weaknesses. It doesn’t play to his strengths as much as many game situations do.

To do less in his position invites a ready-made excuse. As one of the most mentally-demanding positions in all of sports, allowing yourself an out, no matter how small statistically or meaningless in the grand scheme of things, is a dangerous precipice that could lead to a lack of accountability, professionalism, and sauce. And we all know what happens when a goalie doesn’t get his sauce.

I’ll say this on the good faith you really don’t understand, and in so doing urge you to come back to this and read it tomorrow, with a clearer head.
1. “It’s my opinion that the goal is on the goalie, regardless of it being a breakaway or not.”
2. Avs lost 3-2.
3. If there were no breakaways, maths tells us the score is 3-1.
4. If the goalie is also responsible for breakaways then him losing 2/3 1 on 1 battles = loss.
5. Loss is on Giguere.
That’s where your opinion goes man. You don’t have to explicitly say it because, intentional or not, it’s between the lines.

Awesome pics from the game here by one of my very favorite photographers. She used to live in MD and take pics at Caps games and practices, she takes the best pics. She told me that the lighting at Honda Center sucks and they won’t let her bring her best lens, the longest one, I guess she used that for her Caps pics, which were even better in my opinion (more vibrant colors). Here’s a couple from the game that I liked.

The Doublewood is probably the best comparison that can be made. They are vrey similar. I won’t go into flavors because you should enjoy it and discover.
I would advise with Dalmores, because they are naturally heavier and their chill-filtering is usually less than others, to try to neat to start, then add a few drops of water. Most Dalmores will cloud heavily and the flavors will be more intense.

He answered that in an Avs Mailbag a while back
Ryan O’Reilly: I noticed that you no longer are wearing the visor on your helmet. Is there a reason you have taken it off?
Austin from Golden, Colorado
This was by far the most popular question of the week, with over 40 of you writing in to ask Ryan why he no longer wears his visor. He actually made the switch during Colorado’s long road trip in early October. Ryan last wore the visor on Oct. 12 in Detroit and was without it three nights later in New Jersey.
"No real major reason. My visor was just kind of getting annoying. It was getting water in it and making it tougher to see. Now that I have it off I can see a little bit better and it helps me play a little bit more on the edge. I also feel and look older, so I think that’s mentally good."
As a follow-up question, how does Ryan weigh the comfort factor versus safety?
"If something is going to happen, it’s going to happen. Since I’ve taken it off I’ve had less sticks to my face than when it was on. Sometimes when I’d go into the boards the visor on my helmet would hit the boards and jam it down. There are things that are going to happen and I can’t really control it, whether I have a visor or not. I’m just going to play and hope for the best."
Thus sayeth The Google. MHH power-spammed that question if I remember right
At exactly what point do you start to realize that life without knowledge is death in disguise?
Thanks! Although I have to say I completely disagree with him. Karl Alzner freaked out Caps fans this season by coming back without his visor, I think he practiced some that way in preseason and talked about trying it out in a game but he never did and we were all happy.

Tried to watch the game on the DVR after and it looks like the Avs suffered what is common with putting your forwards at the point, you’re simply going to give up some short handed goals. Who had the bad line change on that 3rd period break away? Didn’t have the motivation to rewind.

Couldn’t really tell. After the game, Sacco said it was a case of a defenseman pinching and a forward dropping back to cover for him, but then the forward sort of got sucked up a bit higher than he should have (which makes sense, since he’s a damn forward and not a damn defenseman) and Ryan Getzlaf made a terrific saucer pass from behind his own net to Colorado’s blue line and that was all she wrote.
The play-by-play says 88-26-39-3-27 were on the ice. It’s not that simple, though, because 3 had just come on the ice, which makes me wonder if another defenseman had just come off even though Bobby Ryan was cherry picking at our blue line. For once, nhl.com is of no use to me, because it’s not clear enough and too short and it even looked like we had 6 skaters out there on the ice when the goal was scored and so now I’m just confused.
Also, Kate Beckinsale is pretty close to the perfect woman. Not to get all technical here, because, even though there are certainly different standards of beauty, some of the common characteristics of beautiful women over the years are full lips, large eyes set a bit apart, high cheekbones…basically what’s referred to as the Golden ratio.
So, with that out of the way, if Kate had a bit more rackage she would be in the top 10 for hottest hottie of all time..
Kate is easily on my “5 freebie” list. (I thought she was especially beautiful in “Serendipity”
