What are the Avalanche boys doing for the All Star Break?
As we all have heard a hundred times before, Gabriel Landeskog is the only Avalanche player participating in the All Star Game activities this weekend. So what are the rest of the guys doing?
What we know:
TJ Galiardi has flown down to Cabo San Lucas with Kevin Shattenkirk and Chris Stewart. Sure is good thing the Teej trained so hard in the off-season, or he might not be in shape for all the beer pong they're bound to play.
David Jones is also headed to Mexico, but accompanying him is his new wife. I wonder if they even bothered to bring sun block.
Stefan Elliott went home to Vancouver. Hopefully all that good home cookin' doesn't put him into a food coma.
Shane O'Brien is having a quiet weekend in Aspen, hanging out with some really demure U of Arizona girls: @KERafferty, @Abbychandor, @eymann66
Ryan O'Byrne also went home. He's enjoying some R&R, but he's also still working on his charity: Ryan O'Byrne Charity Camp, launching on Feb. 1st.
Kevin Porter is yet another one going home. Sure hope he doesn't spend too much time there, or he may end up infected. He did say he's spending time in Ann Arbor. I hear it's a much nicer place.
Semyon Varlarmov is in Aspen watching the X-Games. (Thanks to Lisa Jordan for the heads up.)
Daniel Winnik is also in Aspen. I bet he's sipping hot cocoa by the fire with O'Brien and his sweet friends.
(Just in!) Matt Duchene is pounding the vodka fishing in Vail, if the creek isn't frozen. If it is...well, he has plenty of ice for his drinks then.
What we can infer:
Milan Hejduk, Jan Hejda and Jean-Sebastien Giguere are spending time with the fam. I wonder if they have to help their kids with homework or just get to be "fun dad" all weekend.
David van der Gulik is finally getting quality time with his new son, Jackson. His wife flew out with the baby a couple of weeks ago.
Matt Duchene is most likely pounding the vodka bored out of his mind. He's essentially been on a break since the injury. I bet he's watching a lot of episodes of this. See update above.
Cody McLeod is another relatively new daddy. He and his wife had a daughter last season. Do you think he's already teaching Peyton the art of fighting?
Ryan O'Reilly is eating lots of chicken soup and enjoying the quality care of his live-in nurse with benefits. I hear she's pretty hot.
What we can imagine:
Kyle Quincey and Erik Johnson are hitting up bars and hitting on blondes.
Ryan Wilson is dominating video games.
Matt Hunwick is NOT anywhere near a serving of nachos.
Paul Stastny is having a quiet weekend with his girlfriend, snuggled up on the sofa watching RomComs.
Peter Mueller is lighting candles in the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in LoDo, thanking God for his health.
Jay McClement is cooking dinner for his wife every night.
Chuck Kobasew is buying a new car.

If memory serves me correctly
Didn’t Todd Bertuzzi and Joe Sakic hang out together in Cabo one Allstar break?
The Denver Post article about Varly not pouting also said he was going to Aspen, as well as Winnik, so it was confirmed by Dater/Chambers as well.
“I love Aspen. I’ve been there a couple times now. We were there for Christmas, with my sister,” Varlamov said.
He’s mentioned really liking Aspen twice in Russian interviews earlier in the season.
Yes, I realize that. Hence it was changed. For some reason, I remembered him saying Vail, not aspen. Simple mistake. All fixed now.

When I went to Colorado a year ago, I only went to Colorado Springs. Is Aspen as nice as Varly says in all his interviews? I’m not into skiing really (went once in Utah but didn’t care for it that much).
I hear the beer flows like wine.

And the women flock like the salmon of Capistrano.
Whiskey tends to make me high, and sad songs make me cry. Pretty women break my heart almost every night. I run on beans and nicotine; I'm a real, live buckaroo. And my heart's not pure, my boots ain't clean, and I never tell the truth.

Aspen is awesome… if you’re rich (and he is!). If you’re not (like me!), Glenwood Springs is nice

I’m from Glenwood originally, and agree firmly with this statement. Glenwood’s great, and the Hot Springs Pool is awesome. But even if you are hitting Aspen on a budget, try the Hickory House. They have awesome ribs.

I am also from Glenwood. Weird! Really the only time in the past few years I’ve ventured on to Aspen was to hit up the Xgames… I didn’t even go into town. Not a big fan, of Aspen or the Xgames live.
I went with GSMS in 6th grade after I got on the honor roll. I had an absolute blast, but the weather was great, I liked the event (men’s halfpipe snowboarding) and I was with a ton of friends. I’d love to go back, but I still can’t afford to spend all that much time in that town. Too pricey.
But luckily I still have relatives in the Valley, so I can stay with them if I do decide to go.

Colorado Springs
Is my hometown. It’s also a big steaming dump of a city, I’m sorry you had to be there.
but yeah, the Aspen is nice, I like the riding better at Vail though. (don’t want to start that argument up)

I went to college in Co. Springs. I liked it (well parts of it).

I lived in Woodland Park for a whole bunch of years, which is just west of there. The Springs isn’t the worst city out there, but it certainly has its…. quirks?… especially when it comes to the people that live there.

That’s for sure. Had a friend whose parents bought a super-nice house in WP, and weren’t living in it yet. Lots of parties. Very, Very, Very Good times.

I thought it was a nice place to visit for a few days, I enjoyed my trip there. Then again it was a completely free trip my friend won so perhaps that lowers the bar? No, actually I did like it. I wouldn’t want to live there though. I guess I’m too used to living in bigger cities now. My friend and I were quite admiring the cheap real estate there compared to DC.
Thanks for all the answers on Aspen, everyone!

Not really a simple mistake. Vail is for Republicans, Aspen is for Democrats.

mmmmm, toast…….
It actually extends to a lot of the visiting clientele as well, but mostly on the “upper crust”. On a “working” level I don’t think many snow riders care about each others politics, or at least the ones I ride with don’t.

Landy's event
He’s in the stick handling portion of the Skills Challenge Relay, for what it’s worth. Event 4.
They didn’t have an “all-around good at everything” portion unfortunately… I don’t think stick-handling is necessarily his forte.

Is there some sort of “all Avalanche players must do the stick-handling competition” clause hidden somewhere?
Just a Colorado girl in Montana who ♥s the Avs and writes for Mile High Hockey.
If that were true, then they’ve been avoiding practicing for the competition all year.
The reason I'm in town, in case you're wondering, is because of a Kansas City Shuffle.
cough cough Winnik

Dude, I grew up in a house full of Republicans, in a town full of Republicans, went to a high school and college full of Republicans, surrounded by Republicans for most of my life. I think I kind of have a general idea of some common threads among them.
