The Importance of A Full-Time Goalie Coach

Mike posted earlier today about Semyon Varlamov and goalie coaching, and most of the links in that post were directed to articles I've written on The Goalie Guild about the subject. So I figured his questions at the end deserved a response from yours truly. I discuss why a full-time coach will always trump a part-time coach, no matter who is in goal and what type of talent or experience they have, along with many other sub-topics.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A FULL-TIME GOALIE COACH.

Be advised, this is a long piece, over 2,500 words. I like to write. Enjoy!

Waiting on Parkkila

Would you be so kind as to print this and mail it to Kroenke and Sherman? If we are waiting on Parkkila to finish off his KHL contract, the situation with McLean makes some sense. Otherwise…???

OK Shermie, time to be the shepherd

Also maybe to Dater and the others at the Denver Post. I am not sure if I’ve ever seen them ask Sherman why he would invest so much in a young goalie and not pay for a coach to help him develop.

No soup for you!

Has the Post actually asked Sherman anything? I can’t remember a quote from him since the last draft, and it was some generic “Best guy on the board” “Got the guy we wanted” sort of quote.

I read this when you linked it on the tweetybox, really really glad to see it here.

Question: Does Columbus have a goalie coach, if so is he good? With the way Mason has turned out, doing the opposite would seem to be the way to go, unless they have someone like me as a coach.

Peter McNabb thinks I'm outstanding.

From what Justin is saying here I really hope we try to get Parkkila as our goalie coach for next year. Varlomov seems to like working with him and I think if Parkkila can help Varly then it is likely he can help Aittokallio.

(If we don’t sign Aittokallio I’m going to riot)

So I’ve only been following our goaltending prospects for the past year or so I was curious; what style does Pickard play? Justin didn’t say much about Pickard.

How can we have so many goalies with so much potential (Varly, Desjardins, Pickard, Aittokallio, ect) and not have a guiding hand around? Giguere is great for the short term but… we need someone to eventually be able to choose which of these prized goalies will be the future of our team.

Here’s the prospect video on Pickard: Youtube Linkage.
Stylistically, I think he’s probably a very by-the-book modern hybrid goalie. Good butterfly, positionally sound, good demeanor, athletic (probably less so than a MAF or Varly), and capable of carrying a heavy workload.

If we don't get our sauce, we ain't watching the game!

Speaking of goalies: Just noticed that Cedric Desjardins is having a very solid season in the AHL so far. He’s first in GAA and SV% with 1.85 and 0.941% with 14 games played. Wonder if and when he might get a shot with the big club.

He’ll be in Denver at the first groin concussion to either Giggy or Varly. Upon his arrival, we will anoint him “Cedric the White Entertainer.”

Who’s “we” white man?

2011-2012 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl: Vyechnaya Pamyat!
2011-2012 Colorado Avalanche: Chances are rapidly diminishing that this will not suck.

Great piece, I didn’t realize how far into an organization a goalie coach reaches. I knew about the benefits of having a fully accessible goalie coach in terms of honing a goalie’s skills, but always nice to learn something new about the “behind-the-scenes” stuff. Thank you for sharing that gem and keep up the great work! :-D

Great article. How much do you think the turn-around we have seen in Brian Elliot can be attributed to goal tending coaching? He is like a totally different player than he was here.
