Official "Who Should We Trade For Or Sign?" Thread

So in many different threads much has been discussed surrounding trades. Who is available, what would we have to give up for them, etc. This is simply a thread for everyone to discuss these at all.

Star-divide

It is obvious we need a winger, should we trade or wait for UFA. Who should we get if we trade or go the UFA route? What are fairly plausible trades (from as an objective viewpoint as we can get)? Is trading Stastny a plausible route right now? So many questions and more, so let's all discuss it!

Except while I was learning French in high school, I was managing for a basketball team and definitely let slip some French phrases there too.

I just feel like I can use them more on this board because there are at least a few French speakers that understand what I’m saying. Hockey certainly does lend itself to bilinguality more than basketball does.

As said many times before, no one would take on Statsny’s contract. With the numbers he’s putting up so far this year, he’s not exactly a bargain. I’m not saying I would want him to go, I just don’t think it would be feasible.

by Andy_ on Jan 10, 2012 7:43 AM MST up reply actions

I’ve put far too much time into this question. Here’s my top 5. We’ll assume Peter Mueller is never playing again.

5. Tyler Arnason

4. A russian forward. We don’t need Defense or Goaltending. Kulemin and Semin are skilled players, but I am not too big a fan of either one (especially Semin). I just wish Varly has somebody he can talk to in his home tongue. Meh… maybe it’s important and maybe not… His English is sounding better with each interview.

3. James Van Riemsdyk- A power forward with serious skill has been lacking since the departure of Chris Stewart. Landy’s doing his best but put JVR on a line with Duchene and another quick forward (see #2) and you have a heck of a line. Comparable players are Max Pacioretty, Evander Kane and Milan Lucic.

2. Nazem Kadri- This hot shot is similar to Matt Duchene in that he is fast and skilled. If you put them on a line together, watch the defense try and keep up. Also in the same boat for style of play are the likely unobtainable Tyler Seguin and Patrick Kane.

1. Lars Eller- Could be a problem actually getting the Habs to trade him after his 4g/1a performance, but he is big and responsible defensively with a offensive upside. His offense is a little inconsistent, but he is only 22. Would be an awesome third center is Matty D. continues to play on the wing or Stastny happens to get traded.

  • Parise: I still believe he won’t be a Devil next year. His price via trade will be gigantic. Probably too gigantic for the Avs. In FA if he’s on the market, he fits Sherman’s/Sacco’s/Sakic’s mold to the letter and I imagine they will throw 6 million at him for a long time.
  • Semin: For some reason, I think he wears the A either after the deadline or next year. Washington will want line-up players in return but Semin’s history and stigma might bring that level down to something manageable. Maybe Sacco, who has done well with other players, can get Semin’s drive back on track. If Washington believes Semin will walk, they will deal him and hopefully not to the Red Wings, as has been rumored. (Washington and Colorado now have a trading history which evidently means a lot between GM’s).
  • Grabovski: Here’s an interesting case. I have no idea what the Leafs wants, but if any of the fans come on here they will likely say Stastny. He’s a pretty good fit at a cheaper cost at the deadline, if the Avs want to add someone.
  • Kostistyn: Or however you spell it. People over look him but Montreal sucks right now. They need to shed some salary (Gomez) and will likely want to re-tool their team. He’s a very good winger and his brother is already gone to Nashville. Since Montreal appears to be out of the playoff picture, I think he is one of, if not the, most likely candidates.

The caveat: Mueller. No one knows what is going on with him, but it seems the Avs are taking the Bergeron-route. Weeks/months of skating and then putting him back in the lineup. He might be the trade deadline “acquisition” because it looks like he is scheduled (based on a cursory look at the reports of his skating) for a February/March return. He is the key. If he comes back, the Avs likely don’t make a big splash. If he doesn’t, they probably do something. If he’s done forever, I think they run at a huge FA. If a trade falls to them, Sherman has shown a tendency to take it and I think he will.

Grabo's UFA this year.

And he’s said that the only team he’d happily go to from Toronto is Colorado. He’s a center, but he shoots left and could possibly move to LW (depending on what Dutchy does). He’s not exactly a big dude, and his numbers aren’t earthshatteringly good, but .62 PPG is pretty decent. At 27, he’s still pretty young, and he’s in his 5th NHL season.

I wouldn’t mind picking him up for a reasonable price. If we wait until summer, we might even be able to snag him UFA.

that’s really interesting. I wouldn’t mind it, he’d be a solid second line winger if he was willing to switch (or center with Duchene on wing)

by ProfessorOak on Jan 10, 2012 12:43 PM MST up reply actions

well it is pretty straight forward who to sign if they make it to UFA

but to trade for?

Brad Boyes- former 43 goal scorer who has produced extremely well with talented set-up guys and so-so with everyone else. Would come cheap (outside of his salary)

Rene Bourque- Size, speed, and the ability to score. Could cost a nice pick or player but would be worth it as we have yet to see him play with a talented center in Calgary and could be a 30 goal guy in Colorado.

Cam Atkinson- One of Columbus prized prospects playing a position the BJs are deep in. Luckily Columbus has dire need for goaltending (even lacking in the system) and could use some depth at all levels on D.

Antoine Vermette- UFA to be but would come cheap right now. Great role-play and two-way player who is intense and can make a difference in other ways when he is not scoring. Has been (or near) a 20 goal scorer for the past 6 seasons (that would be every full season he has played in the NHL).

Bobby Ryan- cost a small fortune. Luckily the Avs have what Anaheim needs (goalies/Ds) if they go for a rebuild or wish to add youth but it will probably not be enough unless Anaheim is crazy.

Tuomo Ruutu- Every playoff team and their mothers will be after him. He, like Vermette, has exactly what the Avs like (skill/character/compete). Unfortunately he has been a dud in his lone playoff season.

Kyle Okposo- Someone needs to pry him from Long Island before he figures everything out and turns into the player he can be. Unfortunately many (including Snow) expected too much (30-40 goal scoring power forward) so a change could help him reach the 25-30 goal scorer he should be. Like many of the above teams mentioned, the NYI have little to no quality prospects/youth in goal or on D (let alone quality depth on D at the NHL level) and could be a fit for Colorado.

Jeremy Morin- struggling this year and the Hawks love to give up players who are not yet part of the core. They will want to add depth for the playoffs on D and in goal and could part with him for it as he is still very raw and may never materialize as an NHLer. If he gets everything together, he could be very very good

Are the Avs contenders?

Parise came out and said money and a chance for a Cup are going to weigh heavily in his decision on where to go. On one front the Avs are in good shape, but do free agents consider the Avs to be contenders?

A healthy Avs squad is potentially one or two (maybe three) pieces away from being a solid threat. If you think pretty highly of yourself as that one big addition needed to get the team to the next level, well then you just magically made the Avs legit contenders. ‘Course we’re not exactly Chicago or Detroit, so your Marion Hossa’s may have better options out there.

I hope that’s the case. I’d also be curious to know how many players have the Avs as an option on their list of teams for which they would waive their NMC.

I imagine some FAs are also interested in coming to an established winner. While the Avs have the movement going, there’s a big difference between taking a phone call from captain Joe Sakic and one from captain Milan Hejduk.

Parise is going to have a lot of options. I just hope the Avs’ thrifty ways over the past few years haven’t taken them out of contention before the race has even started … assuming the Avs are interested in racing at all. We’re still in the “hoping” stage that this salary floor business is temporary.

I think it would be a mistake to trade any of the following: Stastny, duchene, landy, elliott, johnson, galiardi, winnik, factor, siemens. I could more or less see anybody else being moved for the right price. Maybe even Stastny if they could pick up a stud winger around draft time or at the deadline (if he is moved, the later the better from an opposition standpoint as they have to take on less salary.)

You look at what this team can do when it is playing well and it would be hard to tear it apart. what they need to add is some size and skill on the wings. I would love to see Parise come to Denver and it could happen. Heck, everybody was convinced Vokoun was going to be an Av. It would be also be cool to see Matt Carle return to Denver

by ProfessorOak on Jan 10, 2012 12:45 PM MST up reply actions

I’m curious as to your reasons why not Matt Carle. He seems like he’s a versatile defenseman with size, maybe a little like Kyle Quincey. Granted I haven’t watched a ton of Philly games but when I have I have been pretty impressed with him as he has offensive abilities and has not made many DERP turnovers. Of course it would all have to be at the right price and guys like O’byrne, O’brien would probably have moved on in this scenario.

by Do Not Feed the Octopus on Jan 10, 2012 2:58 PM MST up reply actions

John Buccigross predicted earlier this season that Carle would get in the $6 million/year range. May be right, may be wrong, but why do we need him? Our D is very solid, good mix of scoring and preventing scoring in there. Or were you thinking about the option where we convert Carle to a top 6 winger, perhaps?

by DiD on Jan 10, 2012 2:59 PM MST up reply actions

beyond my personal bias against Philly, I feel that Carle was more held up by Chris Pronger. Pronger had to make up for Carle’s mistakes, and because Pronger is a great d-man, he was able to. I also feel he is the product of a really good team. Admittedly, I have yet to watch him very closely this year. Is he solid, yes, but we have plenty of solid d-men right now.

I'm not questioning your powers of observation; I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.

by ProfessorOak on Jan 10, 2012 3:08 PM MST up reply actions

That’s fair. Maybe i’ll have to watch the Flyers some more this week and see what I think of him then. As for the money part of it, $6 million per year for anybody outside of the Weber/Suter/Doughty/Chara class is too much for my tastes. I know some of those guys will make more or less slightly but the point is I view him as a solid 2/3 defenseman not a franchise guy

No he should though. He is a factor. He is skating and preparing for a return. He should be treated as an acquisition and should play as such.

His future is in flux but he is as likely to play as he isn’t. The only way he shouldn’t factor in is in the sense that they cannot bank on him being ready at the deadline in February, but maybe later.

They should treat him like every other player: One play away from not being available. That’s why you need a deep organization (and why the Avs should have signed several more wingers last summer).

by Andy_ on Jan 11, 2012 8:43 AM MST up reply actions

No. His chances of being out long term have to be over 75%. He should not be counted on. To do so would be silly.

I’d love to be able to say he should be treated like any other player, but you know that just isn’t the case. He’s managed 3 games in two years. I would be SHOCKED if he played again this season. Or ever.

Point is, you should operate under the assumption that he won’t be an asset to the team ever again. And if he comes out and surprises us, then great. But to plan on something like that is unwise.

But I don’t think you read me right. Every single player is one play away from gone for good. Yes, I thought the same thing about Turris in Phoenix, but he really just needed a coach that believed in him (I know-small sample size).

Peter McNabb thinks I'm outstanding.

Sniper that tosses in 25-30+ goals in a full season? Avs need a winger, Cam is on a team having a rough go that the Avs have made trades with before.

I'll keep this brief.

He’s a little wiener, though.

When does the hurting stop?

by BraxtanFILM on Jan 11, 2012 3:08 PM MST up reply actions

But he’d be OUR little wiener. We all love to play with our little wiener.

More seriously, no one really liked Claude Lemieux, but he was good for the Avs.

I was a huge fan of Claude. One of my favorite Avs player

It's cool.

We have a big Johnson.

2011-2012 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl: Vyechnaya Pamyat!
2011-2012 Colorado Avalanche: Chances are rapidly diminishing that this will not suck.

Remember what he did for Calgary?

Now image that in an Avs jersey on Paul Stastny’s line.

I always like reading peoples thoughts, but hate to give any opinions. I just never know what teams want or what teams are willing to give. I think the one thing the Avs should not do is get a rental player. I want a guy that will be committed to us for a few years.

Also, Looking at the new mid-term rankings for draft this upcoming year. That trade for Varley was actually a good trade. We are strong on Dmen prospects. That is what we would be getting if we did not fall into the bottom 4. We had a chance for a really good goalie that is ready to play now. I am liking the trade more and more as the season continues, still skeptical a bit on it, but I am warming to the cause.

Two years ago and last year, the Avs were always in the center of rumors. Articles, posts, blogs, etc. always mention the Avs. Even Eklund, in his stupidity, and Spector, who’s pretty good, always surmised they Avs were looking. Last year after January, you’ll notice the rumors about the Avs stopped. They stopped being featured and talked about and then, bam, the Johnson trade happened.

Right now the Avs are eerily left absent from rumor posts across the board. I think a trade is in the works.

Much depends on Mueller’s next few games and Duchene’s progress.

That makes me sad

Because, and I really hope I’m wrong, but I think it’s not going to end well for Peter.

Much like, and I hope that I’m wrong, but I think it’s not even going to start for Hishon.

A feared enforcer, I love Cody the same way you love the only person that will sleep with you. Yeah, its great in the moment but you know you can do better.

I don't care how he spells it, it's friggin "GIGGY". I ain't havin' no french-canadian telling me how to gawrsh darn spell American.

since the avs have a neck for young, injury prone players with huge upside and players who didn´t live up to their expectations, why don´t stick with it? Buy two of them before the deadline. If they are clicking, fine; if not, show them the door. It won´t hurt anyone because they wouldn´t cost as much as one of the often mentioned stars but on the other side, if they come in and bring some chemisty the outcome could be enormous. And the nominee´s are:
Ales Hemsky
Tyler Ennis
T.J. Oshie
Linus Omark
Marcel Goc
and sorry for saying it: Justin Abdelkader
or even get back Wolski

hard choice?

Hi everyone, long time lurker, had an amazing idea for a trade… did not read through 89 posts to see if someone else thought of it but here goes

AVS- trade Stastny and third round pick and/or prospects
CBJ- Trade Rick Nash

gives us a a top 3 player who can flat out score goals, frees up the log jam at center and gives CBJ a realistic rebuilding player, Stastny has proven to be capable of a PPG player or better, because of his lackluster scoring a new team could inspire him to get back to his “old” ways and probably sign him cheaper than the 6.6million we are paying now
and we could easily afford to pay Nash

I like it, but the way Stastny is playing right now, with Duchene back, we can be a real threat. and Welcome!
