Colorado Avalanche Roster Moves
The Avalanche and Monsters have just announced that goalie Cedrick Dejardins and forward Mark Olver have been recalled from Lake Erie. Tyson Barrie has been reassigned. Moving Barrie isn't a surprise as the team had 8 healthy forwards defensemen with Ryan Wilson returning from the flu.
The Avs also put TJ Galiardi on IR due to a shoulder injury sustained in the first period of last night's game against the Canucks. There hasn't been an official announcement about Jean-Sebastien Giguere's status, but the appearance of Desjardins indicates he may be on the shelf for at least a few days.
UPDATE: Per Dater Giguere is day-to-day, Galiardi will be out 7-10 days, Mueller is skating with the team and expected to only miss the Oilers game might play against the Oilers (punctuation is hard, eh Adrian?) and Duchene is also skating with the team, but his return is still unknown.

I'll be the first to say,
I’m excited for the chance to see Desjardins to play. Hopefully JSG recovers quickly, but this is a neat opportunity. He’s always been over .900 as a goaile, with no real chance at the NHL level.
We haven’t seen that kind of consistency since, well, JS Giguere.

My guess is he wont play

Yeah, he may not play as long as Giguere gets healthy quickly and Varlamov keeps playing as well as he has for the last couple games. But take a look at Cedick Desjardins stats. He’s been impressive and with the two games that he played for Tampa, he look really good.
His stats at the home club have been good, too. He has injury problems (It’s looked highly upon by management) but seems solid. He may squeak in some time.

I don’t think he’s going to play. I think he’s going to back up the Varly train, who, until Jiggy gets back, all hopes rest upon.

All depends on how long Jiggy is out.
Next weekend the Avs have a back-to-back with C-bus and detoilet. If Jiggy isn’t back, we could see Desjardins play against C-bus
Datsyuk may have done it first, but he learned it from Peter Forsberg.

I thought you were goofy when you said that, but if he gets the nod on the right of Landy and O’Reilly, the deck is stacked as well as it can be for him to succeed. He will have a chance to fill the net.

Galiardi on IR?
Well, that sucks.
Not sure what the Avs’ management should do, in all honesty. This team feels like neither a seller nor a buyer.
I’m hopeful that that is just to delay sending someone back down when Duchene is ready. I get the feeling that the team likes playing medical musical chairs… someone is bound to be injured soon, let’s wait and see——Gali you’re in, Winnik broke his thumb (etc…)
I'm such a huge fan of the Avs I can name who our goalie was FOUR seasons ago! Crazy, right?!

Moving Barrie isn’t a surprise as the team had 8 healthy forwards with Ryan Wilson returning from the flu.
It seems like we only have 8 healthy forwards sometimes, but I trust you mean defencemen (to use the Canadian spelling).

Although having Giguere and Galiardi injured is not good, it is rather convenient that Olver is being called up just as Duchene is getting back up to full health.
It’s possible that a shrewd move for the Avs management would be to get into the habit of sacrificing an Arnason or similar twice a year – once prior to the season starting and once at the all-star break.
Duchene gets Olver and Mueller? Landy Radar Winnik and then Jones Stastny Hejduk
Paul Stastny did, what Paul Stastny does. Score big goals.
I’d be more apt to do:
Duchene – Stastny – Olver
Landy – O’Reilly – Mueller
Jones – VDG – Hejduk
Winnik – McC – […..]
A man who stole my whisky used the defense that no one could resist a bottle of Scotch. I had no choice but to testify on his behalf.
Close, IMO. I’d like to see:
Dutchy – SoS – Duke
Landy – Radar – Ferris
Winnik – SquarePeg – Olver
Highlander – VDG – Jones
I’d generally be willing to interchange Jones/Olver depending on performance. Duke’s on a short leash on the top line too. If he doesn’t start playing like a guy that’s nearly as old as me, he’ll have to drop down and play fewer minutes.

Full health? He still isn’t practicing in contact yet
2011-12 Colorado Avalanche: Ruling the East, but bending over for the Northwest
This is true – he’s only started skating with a non-contact jersey about a week ago. Honestly I thought /hoped he was a bit further along than he is.
Although, I do want to see Olver with Duchene again if Olver is still up with the Avs.
I can’t imagine Olver would get anything but a top line center with his skill set.

Dallas just traded their version of SOB to Philly for a 2nd and a 3rd
OK, maybe I’m missing something here. Maybe Nicklas Grossman shits gold that Tom Gaglardi then hoards so that the Stars can afford to pay Jeff Carter.
But it sure looks to me that Philly just gave up a 2nd in 2012 and a 3rd in 2013 for a 27-year-old UFA who has 5 points this season – all assists – and who is 4th among Dallas D in ice time and plays on the PK.
We wouldn’t want to get that in return for SOB?
Hawks fan #1: you're terrible landeskog
Hawks fan #2 He's not that bad
Hawks fan #1: he scores goals against us and makes me feel like a pedo. that’s two things
points aren’t everything. middle pairing shutdown guy with size, like O’Byrne with more poise and speed. definitely a higher class asset than SOB, imo.
Philly still overpaid a lot. but their picks are low and they were desperate for help in their top 4, so they kinda had to. at least we can end the Quincey to Philly rumors, whew.
How bad did Giguere look? What sort of injury?
I was planning on catching the end of the game, but true to this week’s form, I caught a flat tire that ended that hope.

Is it possible?
The Jiggy injury didn’t look like much, and he confirmed as much in the paper this morning.
Is it possible that there is a move in the works involving the veteran net-minder and management is protecting their asset? Also, calling up Desjardins after JSG sat on the bench in his gear, presumably ready should Varly go down, seems a bit odd.
Stirs the pot

I think it’s just an issue of needing a back up while giving Jiggy a couple days of rest. Wouldn’t read too much into it.

Tampa trades our version of Jay McClement and a 7th rounder to SJ for a 2nd rounder
Dominic Moore traded (again). We wouldn’t take this for Square Peg?
Hawks fan #1: you're terrible landeskog
Hawks fan #2 He's not that bad
Hawks fan #1: he scores goals against us and makes me feel like a pedo. that’s two things
oops - that should be "their version"
Hawks fan #1: you're terrible landeskog
Hawks fan #2 He's not that bad
Hawks fan #1: he scores goals against us and makes me feel like a pedo. that’s two things
depends on where we are in 2 weeks. if we’re not trending in a good direction, yeah I’d take it. I don’t think we’re going to re-sign him, good as he’s been. re-signing him is either too much for a 4th line center or a permanent assignment of Duchene to wing, neither of which sounds like what the Avs will do to me.
I’m ready to commit to being a seller. Even if we push and try to make the playoffs, we’re likely to go one round, maybe two.
I don’t know enough about Grossman to categorically say anything about him, but I can’t believe his value is that much greater than SOB’s. And Dominic Moore is older than McClement, not as good defensively, and marginally better offensively. I still think we can get a 2nd rounder for each of those guys. Both are good role guys, but not much else. They’re replaced fairly easily. I’d rather sell now than wait for everyone else to sell and watch their value decrease.
Hawks fan #1: you're terrible landeskog
Hawks fan #2 He's not that bad
Hawks fan #1: he scores goals against us and makes me feel like a pedo. that’s two things
I thought he’s a bit better than SOB. doesn’t pinch wildly and take bad penalties like SOB. but I agree we could get a low 2nd for O’Brien. McClement maybe more, he’s definitely better than Moore.
the problem is that this team needs to experience the playoffs so badly right now. you don’t want to become a Atlanta situation where the team doesn’t know how to handle the pressure, or how to elevate their games. I really feel it’s important to the team’s development to make the playoffs if possible, or at least experience that playoff hunt. The team isn’t so much being built anymore, it’s being grown. These playoff hunts and making the 1st round are part of how you grow a contender.
I think that growth from a playoff hunt is way more important than a couple 25% chances for even just NHL players in the 2nd round. the additional talent we need has to come from UFA and organic drafting.
Agree, although I don’t want to sell McClement. He’s been the Avs best defensive forward in ages, and I think guys like him are important for winning. As I’ve written, him being able to take defensive zone draws has opened up the ice for O’Reilly, and allowed him to break out. Chances are, with injuries Duchene will split time at wing and center, and I’m not so sure that’s a terrible thing. He still has a lot of learning to do.
Unmitigated Disaster mentioned trading winnik too, I just don’t think it’s a good idea unless it looks like they cannot be signed. Guys like that are important.
Maybe

I don’t know 2nd rounders can be great if they are earlier in the round. Talent seriously drops off towards the end though usually.
You would have to consider where it would likely be in the round. As well as how hard it is to find a role player that does what McC does at his price. I don’t think he is a high end 3rd line center.. But he is perfect for fill in duty during injury. Similar to Galiardi and being in the top 6.
