Howdy, boys and girls. I think I’ll actually be here tonight. A little behind on the radio, tho, but whatevs.
Thanks, Joe... Thanks, Peter.... Thanks, Adam....
I’m scared to look at the “would ya?” thread, because I haven’t yet decided if I would. I have almost peeked at the results like five times, but my willpower has remained strong. I am going to make a decision and vote before the game starts, and see what MHH nation thinks about the situation.
Thanks, Joe... Thanks, Peter.... Thanks, Adam....

Isn’t it? I think its awesome. I have a friend in chatanooga that loves that 50s, rockabilly style, and he is friends with the chick who designs these. There are more on her website, but this is my fave so far.
Thanks, Joe... Thanks, Peter.... Thanks, Adam....
Yeah, I sent an a message asking if they ship to Canada. Depending on the price I’ll either be getting it now, or within a month or so. At least the top is incredible, don’t know what the bottom looks like… but I have fallen in love.

I’ve been trying to think… I think the cheapest pair I own was 80 some odd dollars plus 13% tax. And those were almost 50% off.

holy shit. The most expensive pair i own were 100 bucks, but i got them at buy one get one, so really only 50 and they are fairly decent shoes.

This
I have a smaller closet than a lot of women folk I know. But, I spend a lot more on each piece that I own. I’d rather own less, but have clothes that last longer (in fit, style and wear) and I find that the fabric is so vastly different…

It was pretty dodgy there for a while, but I came thru unscathed. I feel better about life now than I have for a while. Even if I do have to work another weekend. Its cool tho, cause I still have half a dozen PBRs that I can work with while I work from home. Yaaay!
Also, Avs game. Huzzah!

Hehe. I’m hunkered down with a case of Coors Extra Gold and very glad I don’t have to work. I’m glad things are going better for you.
Yeah...... I got nothin'
Yup yup. Extra gold… do you put honey on the rim of the can? my roomie and I used to do that. Just a bit of honey like a bead of caulk running between the opening and the rim so we got a little sweetness with each sip. Pretty good, even tho I like Extra Gold well enough plain.
Thanks, Joe... Thanks, Peter.... Thanks, Adam....
I don’t remember where we got the idea… one of roomie’s old punker friends or something.
Now I kinda want to try it with my PBR. It needs… something… to help it be more delicious. I bet that having three more would make it taste just fine.

My first Avs/Oil game, this guy siting behind me said to his fiancee “this chick must just like the logo, bet she knows nothing about the sport”, I bet him. He asked me to “name three Avalanche players”. I listed the entire team, then asked if he wanted me name the guys that were healthy scratched and injured. His fiancee was laughing her ass off at him. They bought my beer the whole night. I became friends with the girl. Actually the four of us were friends by the end of the night.

I wouldn’t want to date a hockey player – the guy would have to be seriously impressive. I’ve had many chances to have one too. More than my share of NHL’ers wanted to take me out- silly men they just like cupcakes- but I am just not drawn to it.

I was always nice about it. The funny thing is that I’m not normally a perfectionist. Unless it’s when I’m making art… then I can be. I mean, people compliment some photography I take, but I hate it. I don’t think the composition is ever perfect.

At exactly what point do you start to realize that life without knowledge is death in disguise?
this girl is considering taking some random psych classes… is that a good idea? abnormal being one of them.
What are your psych interests?
And it’s defs a good idea if you like the professors. Good psych professors can make almost any sub-topic fascinating. Dull ones can even make personality disorders boring.
At exactly what point do you start to realize that life without knowledge is death in disguise?
i’m considering going for a masters in art therapy, my undergrad is in fine art. but you have to have so many psych hours to apply… so i guess i should get on that sometime.
Art therapy? I didn’t even know such a thing was an option.
Thanks, Joe... Thanks, Peter.... Thanks, Adam....
Art therapy is seriously awesome stuff.
Abnormal, any introductory classes to clinical/counseling would be good, any pysch grad program will want you to have had research methodology so sorry if you hate that, personality theory, um, any course you can get in lifespan development or ethics or multicultural issues would be good boons too.
At exactly what point do you start to realize that life without knowledge is death in disguise?

Alright, on the next whistle I’m tossing on my jersey and cracking open a beer that uses malts from spruce needles.
Wish me luck.
Beautiful enduring head
Sweet scent. Definitely can smell the alcohol, but it isn’t offensive. Slightly spicy, don’t really get any notes of the forest, though.
Spiciness plays heavily in the mouth. Crazy flavour in this one, but I’m not sure if it’s a good one. Odd interplay of sweet and spicy. The flavour is on the back of my tongue and has an unpleasant sensation.
Mouthfeel is full and oily. Enjoyable and filling.
I don’t think I like it very much. The flavour is offf-putting. Hopefully it improves as I get used to it.
I think I’ll skip that one. I tend to enjoy white ales more anyway. But am always open to trying new things.

Is this a beer that uses spruce instead of hops? Very old school. Rude, but old school.
"He who fucks nuns will later join the church." -The Clash
Yuck. Sounds like a bud lite with someones marlboro menthol stuck in it.
"He who fucks nuns will later join the church." -The Clash
As I drink more of it I am adapting a little bit more to the flavour.
That said, I shouldn’t have to adapt to the flavour. I hope their Winter Warmer is better…
No, you shouldn’t. Think of it like lutefisk, if you don’t love it right off the bat, it’s just not for you.
"He who fucks nuns will later join the church." -The Clash
I think I’m enjoying it more because I’m focusing my mind on the hops instead. They’re using… columbus hops? I think? Clearly not centennial or cascades, but it’s a Canadian beer so it must be one of the three..
Beer is not meant to be made from spruce needles. I’m glad I tried it, but I’m done with this. I didn’t enjoy beer made of saffron, I didn’t enjoy beer made of rice, and I don’t enjoy this beer made of spruce needles.
Trying things is good. Knowing what you like is the endgame.
"He who fucks nuns will later join the church." -The Clash
What I like:
BrewDog Storm (I don’t care what the reviews say)
Dogfish Head 60-minute IPA
Edelweiss Hefeweissbier (best hefeweizen outside of Germany… maybe even INSIDE of Germany)
Half-Pints Humulus Ludicrous
I was gonna say, Dogfish in Canada. BTW, if you have the opportunity, the 90 min, 120 min, Raisin d’Etre and anything else are awesome.
"He who fucks nuns will later join the church." -The Clash
I’ve had their 60-, 90-, and 120-minute, raison d’etre, Midas Touch, and at least one other. You can get them in Toronto but it’s expensive. They’re easy to come by in Alberta.
One day, I hope to do a road trip out to Delaware to go to their brewpub. I just need to find some other reason to be in Delaware…
love the raison

It’s highly recommended. I’m a hop-head, so I like the 60-minute. People claim the 90-minute is better, but I find that the alcohol flavour overpowers the hops that I love so much. I don’t find the flavours to balance one another quite as well as they do in the 60.
The Raison is very solid, though. I would never turn down a bottle. Some companies deserve my money, and that is one.
hops give me headaches, I may have an allergy

I feel for you, shot. I don’t know what I would do without IPAs.
Hefeweizens and witbiers have a lot of great options out there. If you ever get a chance to try anything under the Edelweiss or Ayinger brands, please do. They’re delightful. I would spend upwards of $10/bottle of Edelweiss Hefeweissbier (but I usually get them for $4).
I love Hefes and have found my niche in Brown, Red and Amber Ales, along with anything belgian

I actually haven’t had a significant number of brown, red, or amber ales. I’ve had a few, but not enough to recommend. My niches are IPAs (especially American IPA and Imperial IPA) and Hefeweizen, with witbier by necessary implication.
If you find a good brown/red/amber aside from Raison, let me know. I would be interested to try more. I prefer ones that do not make too heavy of a use of dark malts. If I want coffee, I’m not drinking beer.
hahaha, anything labeled Alexander Keith’s is just amazing. loved both their red ale and brown ale.

Two DAMN good beers I had were in Japan. Try them if you get a chance. Neither are hoppy.
Miyajima Beer (brewery established in 2010. DAMN good. Bottle-conditioned belgian-style ale. Huge tourist spot near Hiroshima)
Ginga Kogen Weizen (you can get this outside of Japan, but it’s a different beer. They use different ingredients. The one outside of Japan is sub-par.)
I can honestly say, I will never be in Japan. While in scotland I loved Carlsburg, Strongbow(a cider), Carling, and really anything they had there

I’m biased, but Asheville NC has 11 breweries plus many outdoor opportunities for fun. Beer City USA 2 years running.

Also biased, but I’ve heard the Colorado has a HELL of a microbrew industry. My experience with Avery has made me feel like that is true. Advertisements for Great Divide have increase the likelihood.

I hope to try the new RiNo Beer Co. thats opening tomorrow, and the guys at the Cheeky Monk are setting up shop as a microbrewery next door to their bar. Rock Bottom has some decent brews, I guess, but I would rather order from Tommyknocker or something.

You’re not too far off base. -30 and -50 are both things that I have experienced and I did not find them too different.
Realistically, though… when it hits -10, you do all that you can to stay inside. The 10-second trip from car to store is not a good measurement. I imagine that if you were to stay outside for an hour in -10 and an hour in -30, you would notice the difference pretty quickly.
we had -32 a few times last winter…and the heater at the school i worked at wasnt working.. but they didn’t call off school the first time. Cause they hadn’t called off school in 20 years and were not about to do it for -32 degree weather. it was pretty stinking cold.

I take this back, there are still very clearly acts of oppression in modern-day North America. I feel like overt racism and sexism have disappeared to negligible amounts, but oppression does still occur incidentally.
The social stigma of being a racist or a sexist has become so strong so as to destroy overt acts of discrimination, but that hasn’t extinguished it in its entirety. I don’t realistically expect it to disappear, due to the inherent xenophobia in every society.
Another reason is that those with privilege don’t want to give up that privilege to help another group, because let’s be real, privilege totally benefits us (at least me, I am not sure how you identify).

White heterosexual male. When I make equality arguments in law school, it is difficult to be taken seriously. Which drives me nuts.
That said, I feel like we have taken such incredible leaps and bounds towards equality in the past 100 years. I am so proud of society and hope that it continues further. Next step: equality for transexuals and gender-queer.
gender-queer?
Is that a real term? Sounds like it can’t possibly be what those people would want to identify as given how negative the word queer has become
At exactly what point do you start to realize that life without knowledge is death in disguise?
it is a term, my supervisor actually identifies as gender queer. Part of that is taking the term and trying to take it back. As feminists have been trying to with c*nt, or african americans with the n-word, etc.

LGBTQ. The Q is for queer. I am not certain what the appropriate term is, since I don’t know any individuals with undecided gender identity. When I do, though, I will adjust myself appropriately.
I feel like this is the most vulnerable group, currently. In Canada, at least. The LGB communities are treated very equally, for the most part (Canadian Blood Services excepted), but the transsexual and queer groups are not. This is improper and needs to be remedied immediately.
LGB communities still lag far behind in my neck of the woods. Transsexuals are practically unheard of. I think Oklahomans would put one in the zoo if they found one.
At exactly what point do you start to realize that life without knowledge is death in disguise?
It is very much based on location. Toronto is different than Oklahoma. Calgary is different than Cochraine.
I hope that I live to see the equality reach the near-perfection that it is trending towards. I don’t realistically expect it. If I live until I am 90, that’s only 57 years to reach equality… not enough.
I agree, I don’t realistically see it happening, but I know it has taken huge strides.

I was risen in a suburban community in hick country central PA. The saying goes, PA is made of Philly and Pitt, anything inbetween is Alabama, and it is almost true. It was a culture shock to have a gay roommate my first year of college. I can totally attest to the suburban and rural areas not being very tolerant.

This is actually what I was talking about when I mentioned Canadian Blood Services. If you are a man who has had sex with another man, you are ineligible to donate blood in Canada. This is UNACCEPTABLE.
Same with red cross. That’s why i never donate to them. They also won’t accept if you have had sex with a man from Africa (or have had sex with a female who had sex with a man who was from Africa, etc.). Fuck them, better organizations deserve my blood.

I believe the definition of Gender-queer is a person who identifies as one sex, but identifies as that opposite normal gender. For example, a women who identifies as female in sex, but as male in gender.

Gender queer is a bit of a catch-all, from my understanding. There is physiological gender, which must be male, female, or both. Then there is gender identity, which may be male, female, both, neither, or something else which I failed to include.
How can someone possibly not fall under A, B, A and B, or neither A nor B?
At exactly what point do you start to realize that life without knowledge is death in disguise?
see my above post. It is really hard to explain but there are certain degrees of A, of B, of A and B or of neither A or B, etc. That is explaining it in a nutshell. I really can’t explain further.

At exactly what point do you start to realize that life without knowledge is death in disguise?
It’s alright, I grew up in a middle/working class, predominately white, Catholic/racist and homophobic family. The fact that I know this much is an anomoly. It took much much mentoring from my supervisor in undergrad. Luckily I work in Student Affairs which is about as diverse a profession that one can be in so I am exposed to topics like this fairly often. I will recommend you a book, titled “Privilege, Power and Difference” by Allan G. Johnson if you wish to learn more about the subject matter. It’s a great read, an easy read and really opens your eyes.

I don’t believe that I am educated enough on the topic to make an accurate representation. You can assume that I am hedging my statements by saying that there is something outside of those categories.
The way I would see it is that there is “A”, “B”, “A and B”, and then a vast group of individuals which fall outside of those categories who would not want to be grouped into “neither A nor B”. Take this with a grain of salt.
Essentially you are correct, as I said, i was taught that with all the categories we have, there are tens if not hundreds that aren’t named. It is just one huge spectrum.

Yep. I like to really see it as a spectrum from 1-100. There aren’t enough names for everything in the middle. One end is homosexual and the other end is heteronormative.

We have taken huge steps and I find it surprising that you aren’t taken seriously. Usually it is the ones like use, the ones with privilege, that really need to be apart of the argument because we have privilege. I too identify as a hetero-normative, white, male.

I might be feeling this way because of our current topic in law school. We’ve been discussing prosecution of sexual assault. It is difficult to be taken seriously as a white heterosexual male making comments that try to improve the rights of an accused to a fair trial
why? I wouldn’t think that would matter?
by the cool breeze on Feb 17, 2012 10:24 PM MST up reply actions
I wrote a long answer to this comment, but then I deleted it because I am well aware that it is not difficult to determine my identity from my screen name.
Suffice to say, making a comment which favours increasing the ability of an accused to absolve himself or herself of guilt in a sexual assault case is asking to be attacked on grounds of sexism. It is a very sensitive topic and one that I am unwilling to broach without sufficient time to prepare my statements properly.

It’s real interesting. In some states in the US, males that are raped by males, can only be prosecuted for Sodomy, instead of rape, or sexual assault. Speaks to the stigma that surrounds anal sex that it isn’t actually sex, because sex is between a male and a female.

by ProfessorOak on Feb 17, 2012 10:26 PM MST up reply actions
Part of the reason I love federalism in Canada: when sodomy was removed as a crime, it was removed as a crime throughout the country.
I do not think that that stigma still persists in Canada. It probably does in small pockets, but it is definitely not the majority opinion. Of course, same-sex marriage is well-recognized here already. I think we may be at least a little bit ahead of the USA in terms of equality rights.
you probably are. Also, for the record, not sure if you are aware, but the difference between Heteronormative and Heterosexual is that Heterosexual just means different or opposite. For example, my colleague who is gender queer, could date a female who identifies as a female, and because my colleague identifies as a male, it is a relationship that is still opposite, yet not the norm, so I have been taught to use heteronormative because i am a male sex, with male gender who prefers female sex and gender. Just a nice little tidbit for you.
"I see now that the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant; it is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are." - Mewtwo
by ProfessorOak on Feb 17, 2012 10:36 PM MST up reply actions
See, I understood heteronormative to refer to the “ought to” standard of heterosexual individuals. That is, I understood the term to contain a connotative value which determined the pursuing of an individual of opposing gender identity as a sexual mate as the “proper” method.
I will need to look further into this. My nature makes my standpoint clear, so I don’t spend much time worrying that I may offend another with my diction, but I would prefer to use the proper terminology.
definitely. It’s almost impossible to not offend anyone because although we may see ourselves as smart, there are still areas for which we are ignorant and will always be. The true definition of racism (which is debatable) is that only groups with privilege can oppress groups that are disprivileged. Use being white, male, heternormatives, it would almost be impossible to experience true racism against us unless we moved into a society where we were the minority.

I don’t realistically think that Landy is going to be a Calder winner unless he takes the scoring title or competes heavily for it. His “intangibles” are great, but that simply isn’t enough.
He’s a VERY good rookie. He isn’t the “best” rookie, though.

I called him Petrovich once but no one got it :(
At exactly what point do you start to realize that life without knowledge is death in disguise?
I remember a badass player in NHL04 with the last name of Petrovich, hahaha

This was a great game in my mind…Best I have seen us play in awhile. Even better than the one in Vancouver….to me at least

I like Olver
He always plays so well.

for some reason, he has chemistry with anyone he plays with. He had good chemistry with Duchene, now with Radar and Landy

He works his ass off every second he’s out there. That helps.

he is like a less skilled Hishon. He is 5-10 but plays 6-2. Love players like that.

Yep. That’s exactly how I see Hish ending up for us – a more skilled Olver.
Still, I’d like us to try to keep Olver and VDG around next year at least in our bottom 6. I really like what they bring to the team.

We better re-sign Olver, concussion history or not, he just gave us 2 pts, along with Radar and Landy.

He almost had a 3rd as well.
And I agree. We need to get him locked up for a while. I don’t see him as a long-term top 6er, but he’s the perfect injury call-in. I think he’d also be okay on our 3rd line most of the time.

Hell yes. I wouldn’t mind him there. He’d be a solid 3rd liner with the occasional 2nd line duty, and he proved why tonight.
