Assessing potential trades
An article I wrote speculating about what management might do as we close in on the deadline. this is the first post I've ever actually put out there, so I'm not really sure how this works, to be honest. I've been reading this blog for about 2 years, ever since I moved out of the mile high city down to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and needed a way to keep up on my Avs talk.

i'm sorry...
but have you watched JJ play? He’s essentially a physical scoring forward being asked to play defense. Unless Stastny shows he is only a 50 point player from here on out, trading Stastny for JJ would be crazy. Same thing with going after Suter or Parise right now. Sure they could get traded and get wrangled into a contract and never reach UFA but to get either of them will require 2-3 quality prospects/players/picks AND a hefty paycheck. The Avs have been burned enough on trading quality pieces for rentals that it just isn’t worth moving blue chip prospects for a month or two of any player with the hope they sign.
As for Ryan, sure I would be more open to trading him and Anaheim could use some players the Avs have but be prepared to cough up something like Siemens and another top prospect/player. One thing the Avs like to do is do even trades. 1 for 1. 2 for 2. 3 for 3. so something revolving around Ryan would require two big pieces going their way for Ryan and a lesser pick/player (throwaway?). It will be interesting but I wouldn’t count crazy Philly from stepping in and offering JVR and another top piece for Ryan.
Languishing for Landeskog
See, I’d really like to see us go after JVR. I think he’s almost a reclamation project at this point, and we wouldn’t be able to get him for cheap exactly, but he’d be much more affordable than say Parise and would fill the same role perhaps just as well. He’s young, he fits the rebuild, and he’s another top draft choice that hasn’t exactly panned out as quickly as people would have liked. But best of all, we can get him for pieces that don’t quite fit our team right now – such as a Jones + Quincey + maybe Gali trade. With any of the big names, they’ll want a member of our core to come back the other way, then that player would instantly become the top paid guy on our club. You think Stastny’s $6.6 is bad? Sutter/Parise would probably be looking at 7+.
Sure, some of the big names would be awesome such as Parise, Ryan, or Sutter (But I DO NOT WANT Jack Johnson, no no no no no), but that’s not how our team rolls. We’re owned buy a bunch of property investors. They made their fortune by looking at a flat, barren piece of land and imagining what it COULD be, then making it come to fruition. There is a whole bunch of parallels between that method and what the Avs are doing when it comes to trades in this rebuild.

To each his own
I would be very reluctant on getting JVR. That Flyers team and linemates he has the opportunity to play with a very good players and I think most are better then what we have here. He has not been anything as what was expected. Why would we expect more then what he has done. If we can get him for what his value is then I might be interested but I think we will have to buy him from his draft status.
When I got to visit with Moser I had the opportunity to talk at length with him about many points. One of the points was the “Avs spend no money” philosophy. We both kinda agreed that is really not that fair of a comment. The Avs have the following they will need to resign. Duchene, Johnson, Radar, Duke, Jones, Mules, Jay Mac, Winnik, Gali, Quincy, Wilson, SOB. They also have Highlander, Porter, Olver, Hunwick and Desjardins. Also, there will be other talent that will be available from other teams. The Avs will spend money this off season. I hope.

It seems like you love JVR more than any current Avalanche player :P

Oh, now you know that’s not true. I do like JVR, but he’s not one of my boys (…yet lol). We probably won’t bring him in, but I still think he’d be a great addition.
Still, even if he did join the team, it’s going to be near impossible for him to come in and beat out O’Reilly, Landeskog, EJ, Mueller, Wilson and the rest of the boys so quickly.

I haven’t seen it mentioned here today and it doesn’t specfiy if the source was management or Dater (saw nothing on the DP website). Who are they looking for in return. Considering the cap hit (and year remaining), can the Avs really get a decent return for Stats? By decent I don’t me what everyone else thinks is fair value but what non-partial judge might see as such.
this was the link (which for some reason never posted…)

I just went through the recent posts, and this is the only thing that I saw on Stastny:
Then, there are the what-if scenarios involving players that once seemed untouchable. Paul Stastny is one. True, he’s making a ton of money ($6.6 million salary cap hit, with two years left on his deal), but there is always the chance a desperate team in need of offense might give up a lot for him at the last minute.
No mention of Nashville or anyone. And it’s not like Stastny’s $6.6 is hurting the club – it’s just about the only thing keeping us above the floor in fact (we’re at $49.4 mil right now, and the floor is $48.3). I have a feeling that the Sports Xchange or whatever that article is doesn’t know too much about the Avs and is just making stuff up. Either that or they found an article I didn’t, although it seems highly unlikely that Dater would advocate such a move since there’s no way the Preds would want Stazzer’s contract when the entire reason they’re looking to move Suter/Weber is a salary dump.
I’d take Stastny for Suter in a heartbeat. However, the only way I’d see that happening is if it’s a Stastny + cheap player/pick for Suter + overpriced player, and even that scenario is a long shot. If we want Suter, it’s going to have to happen on July 1.

The article was about hockey rumors and NHL news and notes and the Stats part actually had nothing to do with Nashville. They said their source was the Denver Post but I haven’t seen anything on their site as of yet.
I can see Stats going to someone like Nashville though or even the Mild (that is if they stay in the playoff hunt). LA could use him, but they really have nothing of value they would give up in return for Stats (outside of D and that’s probably the last thing on the Avs list atm).

It was probably a Dater article or blog post from last year.
