3 Trades that make the Avalanche Better Now and Later

I'll just get started because no one reads the intro anyone

FIRST TRADE: AVS and LA KINGS

Colorado gets: D Jack Johnson, G Jonathan Bernier, LW Dustin Penner, 3rd Round Pick

LA Kings get: C Paul Stastny and D Shane O'Brien

This trade gives Colorado what they need most. A scoring left winger, which I fully believe Dustin Penner would return to out of the pressure of LA, an extremely talented team that needs to win a Cup soon. A powerplay captain in Jack Johnson. Yes, I know his +/- is bad, but he's only going to get better. And Jonathan Bernier will be the answer at goalie now. And later. Columbus has Steve Mason, so why would they want Bernier? Becuase franchise goalies don't grow on trees, and if the Avs have another shot at one, you have to take that. There is a very very good chance Varlamov or Bernier will be a franchise goalie by mid-2013, so the other is expendable next year.

SECOND TRADE: AVS and Sharks

Colorado gets: C/LW Joe Pavelski

San Jose gets: G Jean Sebastian Giguere and LW Daniel Winnik

OK, I might be just making this one up. But it makes sense for both team. Antti Niemi can be fantastic and horrible at the same time. He'll make 30 amazing saves and let in 4 cheap goals. Giguere provides stability to a team that might have Rick Nash to compete for the Stanley Cup this year. Giguere has been great for us, but he is revived and we should not be selfish and waste what could be his last good year. Winnik is a 3rd line throw in to put icing on the cake.

And Joe Pavelski is an absolute sniper. A good mix with Duchene and Hejduk on a top line to replace Stastny if he is in fact in LA.

THIRD TRADE: AVS and ST. LOUIS BLUES

Colorado gets: RW Chris Stewart

St. Louis gets: RW David Jones

Oh no, not St. Louis again right? Well, when you look at it, we won the St. Louis trade, despite contrary opinion. Erik Johnson is a solid Top 3 defensemen, McClement is a solid grinder on the 3rd line, and Duncan Siemens will be a great, physical, mean, nasty, Rob Blake-like defenseman. St. Louis got a Chris Stewart, who has struggled, and oof course the great pickup in Shattenkirk.

Both right wingers are struggling to return to form. Putting Stewart back with Duchene where he had his best years would do him a favor, and I think TJ Oshie and David Jones would get along just fine. Besides, they owe us big for Elliott.

So what do you think? Am I nuts? Would you welcome these trades? Let me know and follow me on Twitter @austins_57

I should clarify

The no in #3 is because St Louis would not trade Stewart for Jones. I would do that deal in a heartbeat.

I guess by that logic #2 is a no too, since SJ wouldn’t do it.

JACK JOHNSON - DO NOT WANT

With that out of the way, I will now actually read the article……

Well, those look all fine and dandy, but good freakin’ luck getting LA, SJ, and STL to go for them.

With the LA trade, we’d be extremely lucky to even get Bernier + 3rd for Stastny and O’Brien, let alone everyone else. Stastny’s value is low right now due to his second consecutive off season and huge contract, and while I love O’Brien, he’s not going to bring back all that much especially since he’s a UFA this summer. Besides, why would we want another goalie? We have a ton coming up in the system, and bringing in someone like Bernier would completely block them out. And as for the Columbus and Steve Mason comment – the reason Columbus wants another goalie is because Steve Mason is not very good. He has a 3.46 GAA and a .886 Sv%. Yes, he’s not playing behind the best defense in the world, but those numbers are even worse than both Elliott and Budaj’s numbers from last year (3.83GAA and .891 Sv% for Elliott and 3.20GAA & .895 Sv% for Budaj). We already have Varly – we don’t need Bernier.

LA is also set down the middle. They have Anze Kopitar and Mike Richards as centers. Stastny would become extremely redundant, especially after they just acquired Richards this summer in a more blockbuster-y trade than the EJ one.

Also….

A scoring left winger, which I fully believe Dustin Penner would return to out of the pressure of LA, an extremely talented team that needs to win a Cup soon.
Why would we want him if the reason they’re trading him is because they’re a talented team under pressure to win a Cup soon? WE want to be a talented team under pressure to win a Cup soon! Besides, he’s only broken the 60 pt. mark once, and currently has 13 pts in 68 games. I’m just not sure he’s the answer to our Top 6 scoring woes, especially if we’re getting rid of our top playmaking center.

Now, looking at the Sharks trade, why on EARTH would SJ want to move Pavelski? He’s their fourth leading scorer with 45pts in 57 games. He’s also a member of their core – a core that is currently a competitor for the Stanley Cup (choking non-withstanding). He’s under contract for another two years at $4 mil (a very reasonable price for someone at that production level).

Besides, why exactly would they want Jiggy and Winnik? They have Niemi and Greiss, both of whom are doing just fine (Niemi: 2.44GAA .914Sv ; Greiss: 2.13GAA .923 Sv). Niemi can be hot and cold, yes, but so can Jiggy. They’re goalies and by definition not consistent. Besides, chances are actually pretty good that Jiggy will retire here – he already has his Cup ring, and remember, he chose Denver, not the other way around. He seems content in the mentor role and likes living in the Mile High City. Sure, we might move him if the trade is right, but I don’t think SJ is the right partner for that. I suppose they could use Winnik on the PK (it’s currently at 78.4% for SJ), but Winnik is one of the biggest reasons why OUR PK is doing so well. I firmly believe that he is a part of this rebuild, and while he’s not untouchable, he’s a player I’d be VERY reluctant to move.

And as for St. Louis? Yes, that trade is pretty close in value right now, but I’m not 100% sure that Stewart back in a unipron is a good thing. Would he help us skills-wise? Yes. But given his Wolski-ing and the fact that the organization made it pretty darn clear that they didn’t see him in the long-term plans of this franchise by trading him in the first place, I don’t think it’s going to happen. That bridge is probably burnt. Besides, there are much better options than Chris Stewart out there.

These types of trades might fly on NHL ‘12, but I highly doubt you’d get the other team’s GM’s to buy into them in real life. They’re fun to think about, but highly unlikely.

by Hopfenkopf on Feb 21, 2012 12:22 PM MST up reply actions

I think all three are pipe dreams. The first two are trades into the Pacific Division. Eventually the Avs will be in this division and the trade partners are unlikely.

Getting Stewart back is foolish, in my opinion. He doesn’t fit the Blues new possession offense, and neither does Jones. Jones is surplus because he doesn’t fit the Avs new possession offense, and neither will Stewart. Bad fit on both sides.

No way in hell any of those happen.

1: No to J.J. and Penner…just no. Penner is terrible and J.J. is overrated. Also, no use for Bernier. This team paid dearly for Varly and they’ll stick with him.
2: Not happening. Aging vet back up goalie and bottom 6 player for a top 6er? Wishful thinking.
3: Not only no but hell no, Stewart bridge is burned. He doesn’t want to come back to this franchise end of story.

The reason I'm in town, in case you're wondering, is because of a Kansas City Shuffle.

I know these are all pipedreams, but who would have thought Jeff carter and Mike Richards would move? Or even Erik Johnson and Chris Stewart?

The Sharks and Kings are desperate to win a Cup…and I wouldn’t be shocked if any of these happen

And

If Bernier did come to Colorado,

then Varly and Aitokallio are expendable, with Bernier and Pickard being the 2 goalies next year.

Roll Tide, Just Win Baby, Avs and Nuggets too

by ASwaim3 on Feb 21, 2012 9:33 AM MST reply actions

Wait..what? No.

Pickard is going to make the jump from the WHL to the NHL next year? I don’t think that’s happening. Why is Aittokallio all of a sudden expendable? He’s a couple of years from making an impact anywhere near Colorado and he still has room to grow. His ceiling has a chance to be higher than Pickard’s, so I wouldn’t discard him so flippantly. Plus, what are you going to get for him at this point?

And Varly. There’s no way the team would come anywhere near recouping the value they gave up for him less than a year ago, and that’s assuming that Sherman and Co. think Bernier is lightyears beyond Varly in talent and capabilities, which he isn’t, and would want to trade for him, which they don’t.

I fart in your general direction.

by Streams Of Whiskey on Feb 23, 2012 4:40 PM MST up reply actions

Niemi has already proven that he can win a cup. Sure, he may have no had the best goaltender stats in the playoffs, but he has still won a cup. San Jose needs their players to step up to win, not a new goalie.

JVR!!! ♥!!!

I think he’d be absolutely perfect for our team. Not only is he big, he’s a goal scorer. As AJ says, he has “golden hands”. He’s being under utilized on Philly’s 3rd line right now IMO, but I think that he’d really mesh well with Stastny and Duchene somewhere in our Top 6. He doesn’t hit UFA until ‘18 though, so the only way we’d be able to get him is a trade. However, now that Philly has traded for 2 defensemen, I’m not sure what we have that would be able to pull him away. He was the 2nd overall pick, and dispite being underutilized, he’s not considered a “bust” like EJ was. He might be tradebait right now, but I’m not sure we could get him without given up one of our core.

Still, if I could poach any player in the NHL right now to put on our team, he’d be in my top 5, possibly top 3 due to his size, skills, and his young age. He’d be a key member of our long-term core. Just about any trade that doesn’t involve Duchene/O’Reilly/Stastny/Landeskog/
Johnson/Varlamov/Duke (he’s earned the right to retire here) and probably Mueller that would bring back JVR would be fine by me.

Also

I want nothing to do with Penner. Darryl Sutter just recently called him horseshit.
For a team (LA) that can’t score goals, the fact that he’s on a “game-to-game” basis right now because he’s awful defensively and out of shape, it’s not about where he is playing, it’s his play.

No, Yes, Yes

as far as me pulling the trigger on the deals if im the Avs GM…. reverse those if im the other teams GM. And LA still probably would say no. They could get a better forward than Stats for Bernier.

I love the Pavelskie trade, just don’t see San Jose biting on that. You’d have to give them more. The Avs should wait and see who loses out on Nash and what they offer Buffalo for Roy. You maybe be able to get the same, if not better package for Stats, than Buffalo would Roy so I would wait and see on that and then strike a deal if one could be made… Not saying bring Roy into Colorado… him being a center doesn’t make much sense unless you convert him or Duchy to wing. Thats just IMO

All of these are pie in the sky. Not HoF board proposals, but not good. There is no way that any of these trades go through unless Sherman can blackmail these GM’s into doing so.

Sorry.
