Steve Downie is the newest Colorado Avalanche Player

Steve Downie

#9 / Right Wing / Tampa Bay Lightning

5-11

191

Apr 03, 1987

We'd like to take a minute, just sit right there. TSN.ca has announced that the Colorado Avalanche have acquired Steve Downie. They haven't released what the Avs gave up to get him. Details to follow.

Bob McKenzie is saying that to get Downie, the Avs gave Kyle Quincey.

The Lightning then flipped Quincey to the Detroit Red Wings for Detroit's 2012 first round pick.

He can fill in for the top 6 as depth. Or if we roll 3 top lines with Duchene at center, then Downie wouldn’t be out of place.

Not even close! Kobasew is a 29-year old with 25 goals and 72 penalty minutes in the last three years. Downie is only 24 and has 44 goals and 500 PIM in the past three years (compare to McLeod’s 15 goals and 463 PIM). This was a good trade. We got younger and tougher, added scoring and opened up space for our upcoming young defensemen.

Very easy. I think a lot of Avs fans overvalued him. He all of a sudden went from a guy that was ridden hard by fans (including me), making terrible mistakes, and taking terrible penalties to a solid #2-#3 defensemen that was somehow worth J.v.R.

I think the value here is spot on. I like the trade. While I agree Avs have a stockpile of bottom 6 players, I don’t think they had the right bottom 6 players. They lack a truly gritty bottom 6 outside of McLeod and good Galiardi, and that’s just sad.

by c6hor8 on Feb 21, 2012 2:22 PM MST reply actions

I'm gonna have to say it again...

Teams and fans overvalue draft picks. The 25th overall does not have any value but the one you give it (i.e. it’s worth more to some than others). Downie has actual value right now, but the draft pick is nothing but the promise that one day in the future you’ll be getting to chance to pick a player, good and bad.

by c6hor8 on Feb 21, 2012 2:27 PM MST up reply actions

Say that was the price...

The Avs essentially traded Quincey to the Wings for a low-1st. And then took that 1st and traded it for Downie.

That’s what it is. Ask yourself:

1. Is Quincey worth a low-first?
2. Is Downie worth a low-first?

The Avs believe the answer to both is yes.

still a bad trade. I don’t care if he never plays, Cohen had more value than that. And Hunwick should never have been something we actively traded for, he doesn’t belong in the league.

And Vokoun was for sure going to be playing for the Avs.

But that does comfort me a little. A little.

It’s surprising to see Dater like a deal. He usually hates all of them.

What the hell

John Buccigross @Buccigross Interesting comments on Quincey from those that know- “big problem in the room. Bad guy. Never liked him.” Detroit must think they can deal.

… I am not surprised. The Dude played Juniors with him… to say he didn’t have pleasant things to would be akin to say that I dislike Bertuzzi.

It seems like every trade the Avs make is related to some attitude problem in a way

I hear that Matt Duchene guy is pretty good

Oh god.

Kevin Porter kporter12  Buccigross Furtherest thing from the truth coming from his roommate. Great guy in and out of the room.

Bottom line

If the Avs make the play-offs, no one will care. If Downie will help us get there more so than Quincey, then fine. We can gripe about salary cap floor and all that, but if he makes us better offensively, then it’s fine with me. And if Tampa fleeced Detroit for a high pick and a prospect, then so be it. Maybe the Wings traded from a position of need, and so overpaid because of that.

So I guess (thinking out loud here), the more I think about this trade, the more I like it.

Sorry friend, the Avs aren’t making the playoffs.

Can’t we wait a few weeks to proclaim that?

it’s pretty much over.

by thedoctor on Feb 21, 2012 3:20 PM MST up reply actions

That’s absurd, sorry. It might be over. It might not. They need to go 13- 6-3. Unless i’m mistaken, they’ve done similar runs before.

I am not holding my breath, but I don’t believe in finality until it’s tanigble.

it’s not impossible. just highly improbable. SCS has them at 8-14% chance of making the playoffs. that’s pretty grim.

sure, but you’ll just be delaying the inevitable.

Well, I said they were going to when the season began, so I’ll bite the bullet and stick with it. I think they figure it out, get some more clutch goals (with the help of Downie), gain some confidence, get on another hot streak, and sneak in. I have RAILED on Sherman in the past. I really, really want to see this play out. Understand your pessimism though.

If you think about it, all we lost was Quincey, a defenseman on a team that is deep on defense, and got Downie. Who knows, Detroit may not have wanted to trade us the pick anyways.

Back of the Jersey

Downie wore #9 in TB. That number is pretty well claimed in Col. What number do you think he’ll wear?

Hmmmmmm

I like Downie, tough players who can score every once in a while. Trading your TOI leader seems odd for a borderline second line winger. There had to be better offer out there for Q, hope there is more to come at the deadline.
