Live Scouting Notebook: Varly vs. Kings

Hey everyone, Justin here from The Goalie Guild and The Avs Guild. I just wanted to let you know I'll be publishing a Live Scouting Notebook for tonight's Avalanche game. You can view it live right here, or replay it any time at your convenience. Game starts at 7pm!

I want to take a closer look at Semyon Varlamov coming off a tough loss to the Jets, especially at such a crucial point in his first season with the Avalanche. I am hoping that Jonathan Bernier starts for the Kings so I can get a real good look at him before the trade deadline on Monday. Even if Jonathan Quick starts, this is a terrific goaltending duel in the biggest game of the season for both teams.

I really like the way Varlamov played heading into the game against Winnipeg. Confidence is everything for him, especially at his age. When he has an attentive mindset and really battles for sightlines, and to control his rebounds, he's so tough to beat. When he's passive and kicks out pucks, he's very frustrating.

Varlamov has all of the potential in the world, and as I have written about numerous times, the lack of steady structure in terms of goalie development with the Avs is very "scary" considering how good he can be. Over time, his experiences will help him become much more even-keeled in terms of handling emotions, handling a few tough losses, and truly understanding what it takes to be a starter in a tough goalie market like Colorado.

Keep up the great work with all the articles and posts on the Avalanche - I follow the MHH twitter feed closely and love that you guys are attending practices and giving out the goods!!
