Area of lower west Manhattan northern border is Houston Very eclectic, artsy area known for shopping and art galleries. Take the Staten Island ferry (I think its free now) and walk north past the WTC. You can do the trip for almost no $$$

How do you like NC? I know Asheville is gorgeous, but I imagine it can’t compare to the western slope. Hockey is getting bigger in NC, but not anything like it was in CO. Do you miss it as I do?

I grew up in CT so there’s a little bitterness there. But I was in CO when the Avs moved. Been my team ever since.
I love NC, only thing i really miss is having a desert nearby, but the trees make up for it. NC kills Colorado in trees.

I was born in NC, but came to love hockey in CO. So, I’ve always loved both teams.
I totally agree about the desert and environment in general. I still hope to move back to CO someday.
It’s great to ‘meet’ another Avs fan in NC! I always feel so alone at the rare game when the teams meet.

I went to college in a small town in kansas. The biggest deal there was Oktoberfest. Every year I’d have a competition with my friends who could find the best mullet. The winner got free drinks for the weekend. One year there was a man who was not so little around the middle wearing a wife beater and cut off shorts, that were waaay too short for most women even, socks and sandles with a mullet. It’s never been topped.

Languages in general are a lot of fun to learn. French is a decent business language to learn and isn’t as impossibly difficult as things like Cantonese.

Definitely not for everyone. I really enjoy it. I’m conversational in Japanese and have had an on-again-off-again with remedial French.
I’d like to become business-level in Japanese and French someday, conversational in Mandarin. We’ll see if I ever have the time for that.
I know French, English and I can get by in Spanish- if they talk slow.

I enjoyed my two semesters of Arabic (not that I can remember much now). Would love to do some more middle-easter stuff, maybe some southern European. Those are my favorite sounds :)

I think it’s important to really stick with a language, and I’m going to stick with French. But also it’s important to experience more than just learning the language. That’s why I’ve been going to French websites, and I just downloaded Stromae’s “Cheese” album. It’s pretty good….Alors on danse!

I hate to say this because people say it all the time but…everything. I love “foreign music” (quotations because good music is good music, language regardless). I love me some modern rock…and classic. Rap and hip hop is great to change it up. I can appreciate some good country. Piano! I love any genre of music that can utilize the piano…….OK I think that’s more than enough information

See, I like thinking about what I’m going to say if I’m actually upset. Take time to see if it’s something legitimate. So I usually say: “It’s fine for now, I just need some time to think. Give me a couple of minutes”. If I’m over it (which 95% of the time) I am I say it’s no big deal, don’t worry. If it I go and say what it is.

Like, if you say you are going to phone me after an 8 hour drive and you don’t – I worry. Even if it’s a text or an email to tell me you are ok. I know it sounds stupid, but when your first “real” relationship ends due to a car accident… it messes with you. I don’t like that feeling. And I don’t think it’s fair to do it to someone. But, I explain why. It’s not a “power” thing, it’s a worry and memories thing.

Downie looks alright. took a penalty (marginal penalty at best) but has been solid all night. Crashes the net frequently
Every shift I’ve seen him I’ve also seen Radar yes. He’s just up from a lower altitude so he may be getting protected minutes
They mentioned on the NotVersus broadcast that they were trying to keep his shifts short due to the altitude.

When he was a boy, Downie was a passenger in his father John’s Ford Explorer when the vehicle went out of control on the way to morning hockey. John Downie died in the crash but Steve was not hurt.
“Everything is a learning experience and a step,” Steve Downie said. “(The accident)is still in my memory and I miss him tremendously, but you have to put it behind you.”
A few years later, Downie started to go deaf in his right ear. He wears a hearing aid off the ice, but takes it out for games.

The hearing issue wasn’t from the accident though. He suffers from Otosclerosis. It’s degenerative and eventually he will most likely be completely deaf in both years. Link on disease http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otosclerosis

He’s the #1 reason I scream at my beer league d-men. He makes it look easy some nights. Always where he should be. He’s had rough games and maybe even a legit bad stretch earlier in the season, but he is a rock back there.

Ok, sorry, haven’t had time to read the thread, but Goalie Guild had a great live blog on the game tonight. Lots of comments on Varly. I asked a few questions at the end, including:
A lot of Varly’s issues this season have seemed to be mental, with staying focused and consistent and calm. How does he improve in that area?
He just needs to keep playing. He needs to learn it through doing it. He is only 23 years old, has never played this many games in a season, has never faced the pressure of playing in a system like Colorado, is not sure how to handle energy management, etc. He just has to get these type of opportunities and do his best and stay positive. He can’t get down when he has a few bad games, even if he’s benched for a while. He’s locked in for a few years-it’s a slow-roasting process.
The best way to become consistent is to experience inconsistency and then work out the kinks, so to speak. They are mostly mental. It becomes a battle with yourself to manage emotions and energy and knowing how to handle situations that inevitably come out of nowhere.

Slava Malamud thinks Sasha goes back to KHL next season. But Alan May said he thought Semin wouldn’t want to give up all the things the NHL has over the KHL, so who knows. I kind of think he stays in the NHL.
What the Caps do at the trade deadline is a good question, I don’t think the ownership and management is ready to give up on this season yet.

Slava implied that Varly wasn’t a huge fan of Semin, and he’s said before that Varly wasn’t that close with Semin and Ovie, who were BFFs and liked to go out be rockstars, apparently Varly likes a quieter lifestyle and wanted to go to a less high profile team.
But I just don’t know if it was really that extreme, I know that Varly spent a lot of time with Semin and Ovi and I think he was probably closest to them. They both helped him out a lot when he came to the US. I think he was very happy to see them and the other Russians with the Caps (Orlov, Sergei the PR guy) when they were there in Denver in December, he looked rather happy in the video interview on the Caps website talking about going out with them.
